Are Collagen Supplements safe?

I was in Costco about a month ago, and they were giving out samples of Super Collagen+C. The brochure sounds really promising. It's supposed to make hair/skin/nails grow and help in joint pains. I went to Walmart to find something similar and found Collagen Skin Care supplements for $18. Is anybody taking Collagen supplements? Do you know if it's safe?
