Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Loved the quote about how books can transport us to another realm, introducing us to the thoughts and feelings of others and keep us from being alone. How appropriate for this point in time.

19 degrees overnight, full sun today with a high 42 I think.
I'm remiss in keeping track of who is doing what. I've read posts, meant to post, even did a long one and hit the back arrow by mistake, gone.
I had sad news today. Back in my bowling days our league was compromised of mostly one family, with us outsiders filling the league. I found out one of the "moms" had passed away last night from stage IV breast cancer. It sounded like in May she was in FL golfing, no problems, then in a few months home in hospice. Even more unsettling is her daughter, maybe 50, also has stage IV BC. I'm planning on attending the wake, covid sets number of people inside, so it will be brief. They're a great family.
Halloween - I had two kids show up. We had treats in a bowl (opened bags, poured in & never touched them), and I set it on the porch floor and used one of those gripper things (used to reach higher item on shelves) to drop candy in their bags. LOL The lengths we go to hope some kid has a good night. Halloween 2020, it's a wrap.
I've made a goal for November to get out and walk for 1/2 hour everyday. I'm still not comfortable going into a gym, and my past gym closed for good, so I've got to do something - besides remote school all day to nap and pass out at bedtime.
Here's hoping everyone has a good Sunday.

We've had a few kids. One little kid had an awesome Jersey cow costume.

Carole - thanks for the info on your golf group. At Briarwood, most of us have our own carts but I have wondered how well the Club's carts get cleaned. On Tuesdays, we can sign up as a 4some but on Thurs. they try to mix us up so I won't be playing with the League that day. My foursome has decided that we will continue to take separate carts and alternate which two carts drive on the course and which two of us will walk in from the sidewalk. We are walking all 9 now because of overseeing but the 90 year old and I (with bad knees) really struggle. All 4 of us have husbands with pre-existing conditions and we aren't willing to deal with the risks. We felt really comfortable playing this summer even when AZ numbers surged but we were able to drive separately and masked even for the few minutes we were posting our scores. No state mandate. Maricopa County has one but it's pretty casually enforced at our Club.
I have second hand information from a local police dept. that they expect violence whoever wins. I'm filling the bathtub and have stocked up on batteries and candles although Ken thinks I'm over-reacting. I hope he's right!

Taco, I think you are very smart to stock up on things. I went to Ross clothing store today and it was already boarded up but I am here in SF and folks come from all over to bust things up. Not to be negative but I do think there will be violence no matter who wins. Our governor has plans in order to deal with it.

We don't get Trick or Treaters here in the woods. I am hoping ( though I've heard it is beginning to happen ) that there is not another round of hoarding and stocking up well past personal needs. I do think one extra package of certain things might be okay. Last time the hoarding too place we never really ran out of anything though we did come close. Strange pairings at a couple of meals, but not a big deal over-all.
I think we really might ( not sure too much will go on in our little berg ) have harsh issues this election and I pray we all stay safe and anything that does go on is taken care of quickly and without too much harm to anyone. Lot to ask maybe but I'll still hope we all make it through okay.
Loving the sunny weather. Got up at 5 this morning -- ahem, it was really 4 -- but I went to bed an hour early so I'm pretty well rested anyway.

Not meant as a political post, but some viewpoints for your possible actions or reactions as we get into the time period for same day voting and the election. We all want to be safe and feel secure. I will not be posting anything else here ( our policy is only EXTREMELY light political statements as well as religious viewpoints, afterwards, but this time is like no other -- and I hope this will help.
1 big thing: A safe, sane way to navigate election night — and beyond

We all need to be clear-eyed about the social and political volatility heading into Election Day:
- The chances of sporadic violence, significant unrest or voting issues are quite high, according to basically every federal and state official monitoring voting and its aftermath in 2020.
But all of us — Democrats, Republicans, independents alike — can do our part to minimize the drama and darker scenarios, Axios CEO Jim Vandehei writes:
1. Vote and then chill until late Tuesday night. There'll be dumb rumors, wild speculation and armchair projections, all of it meaningless.
- There's no chance you have even a clue who wins until Florida, Georgia and North Carolina are counted and reported.
- More likely, you will need to wait for clear-cut results in Pennsylvania, where it will take days to count all mail-in votes.
2. Don't expect a quick, clear winner: We can't stress enough the chance of it taking days to fully count mail-in and absentee votes, to determine the real outcome in places like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
- Be patient: COVID and the mail-in torrent make this election unlike any other.
3. Brace for the possibility of a "Red Mirage." We first told you about this term, coined by the Democratic data firm Hawkfish, on "Axios on HBO" before Labor Day:
- Because polling and modeling shows Republicans are more likely to vote in person and Democrats are more likely to vote by mail, early counts could look heavier for the GOP than the final result, when absentee votes are all counted.
- So the trends could look more Trump-friendly than the final outcome. This is not a partisan belief; it's a simple fact. (See the full "Red Mirage" segment.)
4. Don't share social-media posts that aren't from a source you trust and know well. Period. Too many people share too much garbage too often.
- Only pay attention to sources of information you trust and can validate with 100% certainty. Measure twice, tweet once (or, better yet, never).
5. Don't overreact. You might see images on cable or social media of protests, or what seem like massive voter intimidation or issues. This can often seem bigger or more widespread than it is.
- Top officials tell us they fear Russia or other actors plan to amplify even the smallest issues to sow chaos. So don't assume the worst.
6. Expect that President Trump may refuse to accept results, if he loses.
- Why? Because he has told us he will fight the voting rules and results all the way to the Supreme Court. Watch his actions more than his words.
- Here's a small sign of what may lie ahead: As reported by the N.Y. Times, the Trump campaign — citing the possibility that "multiple states will require recounts" — is raising money to continue ballot fights into mid-December:
7. Don't hyperventilate about court cases. There will probably be many. But wait until there are actual verdicts and appeals to appraise the significance.
8. Brace yourself for 78 days of drama and turmoil from Nov. 4 through the inauguration.
- No one working for Trump or Joe Biden thinks the post-election period will be remotely normal. Even if you get the result you want, anticipate months of wild maneuvering and protests.
- Here, too, keep it in perspective and don't make matters worse by sharing or overreacting to false or misleading reports.
What's next: The nation is headed into a firestorm. There's no way it's orderly or normal, or even necessarily over when it seems over.
- All we can do is be smart about what's to come, and wise in our responses.
We can all be safe if we are careful and mindful about what is going on around us. Likely a useless statement but try not to worry. It tends to add wrinkles and a lot of times a huge variety of our worries never bear fruit.0 -
Interesting and somewhat surprising to me that there are expectations of violence no matter which side wins. I'm partisan and tend to expect violence from "the other side." I will be glad when the election is over and enough days pass for the count to be completed. For all the lawyers on the "other side" to do their thing in trying to prevent votes from being counted while the lawyers on "my side" try to block them.
On the one hand, I think it would be more efficient to have a national standard of voting but our current system does make hacking the system more complicated. When there are so many systems.
We have not voted early because our voting site is nearby in the gym of an elementary school. Our precinct is small and we've never had to contend with long lines. I hope that's the case on Tuesday.
It's a pretty, cool Sunday here. DH and I need to reset the clocks around the house.

At freezing, but wicked winds. Did not want to ride scooter to Mass. Called a friend for transportation, but she told me one of our priests is sick with C, and of course they live together, so the other might get it too. Her husband has chronic leukemia, so they did not go. I decided to skip it too. I am sure Msgr. would not be distributing the Eucharist, but....
Tippy (initially typed yippy) was difficult last night, so he ended up sleeping with me. I think I will go down for a nap. Made some changes, and I hope things will settle down, there are negative and positive aspects of co-sleeping, especially with a small dog.
I have things to do, but they will happen later.

Another dismal, rainy day in a week that has only had brief glimpses of sunshine. It is a bone chilling damp and only in the low 50's but feels like the low 40's.
Today is the one year anniversary of the tree strike and I was hoping by now, the house repairs would be finished but no such luck. The painter called to schedule painting on the second floor and when I explained that the areas he is to paint are not clean due to residual construction dust, drywall dust and dirt smudged surfaces, he agreed it would not be a good idea. I told him I have been on the project manager about getting the site prepared with no luck, he said he will contact him and ask that it be professionally cleaned. The first rule of painting is start with a clean surface and we do not have that plus there is excess drywall mud on some areas that require additional sanding so I do not want them painting over them. I am done with cleaning up after contractors. I think I need to have a sit down with the project manager because we also have a number of incomplete jobs where the contractors have been very slow in coming back to finish and the list is growing. Again the domino effect because it impinges on other work that needs to be done. I am sure you are sick of hearing of my tales of woe. I cannot wait to tell you it is completed and I have my home back intact. Thanks for listening.

Betrayal, this is what we are here for. The majority, if not all of us have been done for quite some time with treatments, but still face stresses of all sorts. So, this is a great place to de-stress. It is healthy to be able to be HEARD -- and while we were all having txs. we were heard a lot and it help pull us through to our much better condition. So, if this is what will help you maintain that better condition we will gladly stand with you. To be VERY honest, I can barely imagine. I undergo such angst about minor things that I think should be getting attention -- like getting the trash out before the pantry waste basket overflows.
I hope the sun comes out for you in more ways than one, but I'm hanging in there with you no matter.

Betrayal, Feel free to share your woes. I wish I was there to hold your hand and give you a big hug.

Well, my entire post decrying those who give equal credence to legacy journalism and amateur lunatics on the internet just got deleted.

Betrayal- we've got your back! In a non covid world, you could threaten them with a dozen or so BC survivors showing up to make sure they clean up and finish what they started.
My plumber has not contacted me about going on the roof to snake the vent stack. But it's been rainy and today windy as all heck - I make excuses for them. Weather hitting 60 by Thursday, I'll ask if I'm on the schedule. Same with roof, my cousin will take a look, most likely next weekend.
I walked for a 1/2 hour this morning at a local park. I stayed in a wooded area for first 13 minutes, which kept the wind off of me. Once I was out in an open flat area, the wind blew me all over. My hair was a mess, I had to stop to blow my runny nose 2x, and my glands were swelling from the cold wind on my ears. Made me walk faster! I know I'll be "mall" walking sooner than later.
Sandy - you must have spoken the truth, and more seem to like to believe lies.
Monday Monday Monday ...my sleep will be off for a few days minimum. I was awake very early today, and I'm near ready to go to bed now.
I hope you all get a good night's sleep.

Mall-walking is out of the question here--except for an "anchor" store, the malls are shuttered. Even if they weren't, it's just too dangerous. Will just have to either bundle up or hit the treadmill & exercycle.
I will have an Election Day distraction: a dental appt. in the Loop to which I'll have to drive (self-park, thank goodness). I actually miss taking the L, but public transit is just too dangerous now. Our temple lost a brilliant young (41) member (litigator, lecturer and philosopher) last April when he took the L to his office one too many times: a week later he was on a ventilator and gone by mid-May.

My Election Day distractions: a physical therapy appointment (still working on the soft tissue injury to my arm) and then a take out dinner to celebrate our 58th anniversary. Haven't settled on German or Mexican. Would likely be German if we were going to dine there--the restaurant is in the house of one of the founders of our community. They have retained as much of the original features as they could and still meet current safety standards.

Beav, mazel tov on 58 years! You could eat both German & Mexican for dinner--just put on a Linda Ronstadt CD for background music. There is no lawful indoor restaurant dining anywhere in IL now, not for at least the next 2 weeks (and that's assuming the surge doesn't get worse).

Beaverntx - The German restaurant wouldn't be in New Brunsfels, would it? Only ask because I committed from SA to Austin for graduate school. Lovely little town back in the '70's. Whatever you decide, have a lovely time. Happy Anniversary.!
Thanks for the cautions, IllinoisLady. Between Covid and the election, it's a stressful time for everyone. Seems to me that this is definitely a week that being home will be safer. Arizona has had more than their share of super spreader rallies.
Be careful and cautious.

Imagine how our lives might be if everyone had even a bit more of the Wisdom that comes from seeing clearly. Suppose people everywhere, simultaneously, stopped what they were doing and paid attention for only as long as it took to recognize their shared humanity. Surely the heartbreak of the world's pain, visible to all, would convert everyone to kindness. What a gift that would be.

Our closest mall is open early for walkers, but I haven't been in it yet. A gf of mine said many of the stores have not reopened, so even mid day it's pretty vacant. It's very windy again today with snow flurries. So I may mask up and see the inside of that mall!

Nothing on my calendar tomorrow but voting. Today, I have to do a covid test so I can get into the hospital and have my scope on Thursday. Dh has his surgery on Friday so the end of the week will be busy for both of us. I'm glad ( I think ) for having things to be busy with later on in the week. Will keep my mind active and I'll also have a lot of planning to start doing for all the work coming up. I have my Sandoval lady twice a day, 7 days a week. My Centralia lady twice a week, and another Centralia lady three times a week -- plus taking care of Dh as he recovers from his surgery. Last Centralia lady should be maybe for just two weeks so I just have to hang on for a short while. Should be able to do that fine.
Hope you will all have a great Monday. Hi to all who may not have posted lately. You are thought about.

Taco, yep! Hope the SA to Austin commute was easier in the 70s than it is now. That said, I commuted 1to1.5 hours each way for grad school in Ohio in the 70s too.
Sandy, I suppose we could do the mix but I don't quite see schnitzel and chicken olivia as good partners! It will be just us as DS1 and family are quarantined because DIL1 received a call last week from her health care provider that the provider has tested positive something like a day or so after they had been together.
No enclosed malls here in Texas so bad weather walking occurs in the house!
Jackie, here's to negative testing and the strength to carry you through the next very busy days.

We're definitely on our own for the next 2 weeks. DD said there are 4 positive cases at her job, which is out of less than 100 people. They don't know who, so no way to tell if they've been around a positive person or not. She says there's an older man "who looks like he should have retired already" she hasn't seen for a few days and she's really hoping it's not him.

Hi, Ladies. It has been cool today. I have not adjusted to the time change and do hate that it is dark so early. I like the sunshine and daylight. We went to bed early last night, then I was not able to sleep well. I got a James Patterson book and read myself to sleep.
0 -
Ah, petite, some of Patterson's books would not be conducive to sleep for me! Glad it worked for you. I've been trying tart cherry juice for joint pain. Not certain about how much it is helping the joints, but I have been sleeping much better.
Sunny and comfortable here today but it is already cooling off and due to time change sun will be going down all too soon.

Beaver - where did you go to grad school? all 3 of my degrees are from OSU. 70s for my 1st two degrees and mid to late 80s for last.
Petite - I don't like it being dark so early either and I haven't adjusted yet - it usually takes me a week.
Cases are skyrocketing here - over 9% positivity in Denver!!

It's really important for me to get out during the day. I also use the SAD lights. Even as a child, I hated the dark season. Sometimes I think I'm a sunflower.

Karen, I am safe at home. You got it good. https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/wisconsi... LaCrosse has 27% and that is only 40 miles away. Political rallies and negligent homicide.
I am eager to get to physical therapy at the clinic. My hiking poles are no longer working for me. My hands are so sore. Hopefully they can find something that works better, without looking too gimpy. X-ray of my hip shows mild progression of arthritis from four years ago.
I might try the lights this winter, but right now the books are so good for forgetting today.
I reviewed ten pages of my writing project yesterday! New discoveries: Genetic research in South America and Polynesia has definitely discovered interaction. Sweet potatoes came from tropical areas of the Americas, but were taken throughout Polynesia before Magellan! There is Native American DNA among the Polynesians; the degree of fragmentation indicates that the date of mixing was around 1150 AD. They have localized the tribe in Columbia. There is supposedly some Melanesian DNA in Brazil; a DNA scientist showed me some charts of that-- years ago.
I see the oncologist tomorrow. My bloodwork today was all within normal limits.
