Enjoying the stories of whose in charge in your household if you have pets be it dogs or cats. The only time I EVER had just one cat was when I was a youngster at home pretty much. As an adult -- the first cat lead to others and after a bit feeding time because whenever you choose to stop by the feeding tray and have a bite. We usually had one spot ( feeding ) for the dogs and another for cats. Worked until we had to go to a no-grain/fish based food for Bill our black Lab. He became afflicted with a super yeast allergy and his treatments were trial and error for about three yrs. He has been fairly stable now for about the same length of time -- but once the food was "changed" we had to take up the dog feeding area. The cats all wanted to eat the Salmon based dog food. While dogs could likely eat some--just some cat food, some cats are so sensitive ( we had one ) to dog food they would get extraordinarily sick.

It, though resisted at first is working now. The dogs have learned to eat when the food is presented and the cats have learned to back off at the dogs feeding times via a spray bottle full of water. Our small min pin mix will try to steal cat food when she gets the chance so we keep a close eye. She does it when we go and forgot to take up the food till we get back. If we forget -- we have to refill the cat bowl....grrrr.

Got a rare day off which is fantastic. I usually am pretty much off on Wednesday but worked yesterday. Went to the lady in town and then onto the country area where I help ( not the farm ) the former president of the Humane Society. The farm where I go on Fridays is the opposite direction. So, the town lady called a bit ago -- her cleaning lady chose to come today which means I have no one to 'help' today but myself. Yay. I will go do the feral cats and I'm also going to try the DMV and try and renew my license. It is due. There was some notice that we could wait until January -- but I'd like to do it now. The theory was that they did not want ( especially older people ) waiting outside in the possible heat and humidity common late in the summer. Well, it so happens there isn't any of either today. Also -- if I wait till January I'll be 76 and might fall under having to drive to get my license. I don' think that is a big deal if you have a good record, but I'd like to avoid it as long as I can. No good reason more than just because.

Hope you all have a great day.

P.S. Cindy -- wishing you well for your PT. Long PT which should hopefully get easier each time, but soon you will have your abilities back minus the before surgery discomforts.

Tippy tells me when it is bedtime, and he is very insistent about it. We also have arguments about which way to go when we are out and about. He has learned that the command "off" also means "don't itch yourself on the bed". Evidently it is a form of self-soothing, because he now demands to be petted while we are going to sleep. I don't mind that.

Success at the license bureau. I was able to renew. I did however have to drive first. That was a surprise. Also a surprise -- they ask for you to remove not only your mask ( understandable ) but your glasses as well. I look like a meth addict. That is going to be a real beaut when the license ( takes two weeks ) gets here in living color. Well, I least I did not fail my driving test. The lady who administered the test commented how nice to do this in a clean car. Perhaps that helped on an iffy result from anything she asked me to do. She only mentioned one thing other than ( I don't think she took off for that ) the fact that I was a bit jerky backing up. Well, the person next to me parked over the line and took up some of my "lane". Also the test person said ( because most people complain bitterly most of the time ) that the DMV is located with a parking lot that is the dickens to get out of on a good day. The other thing she said was that I got out in the wrong lane leaving the DMV. Apparently right in front of the DMV are three one way lanes. Only two are marked. That is something I'll have to remember if I can, for next time I have to drive. All's well that ends well though so I'll stop belly-achin'.

I was very relieved to get a driver's license notice that could be renewed by mail. I've done that already because I don't want them to change their minds. I was worried they would make me drive. I have lost a lot of parallel parking skills after retirement. When I was working it was a neighborhood where parking required a lot of skill and attention to time. We all had our share of parking too long enormous fines.

Supposed to be 77 today then drop to 69-70 through Monday. Find with me. With a one side mastectomy I like having a jacket or sweater so it's not too obvious that I've skipped the bra.

Our DMV takes photos there and can provide you with the finished license before you leave. Many years ago I had a photo taken that was so bad, I asked for a repeat photo which was denied (now they will do it). I swore I would never show that license to anyone including a policeman if necessary because only an undertaker would have been able to ID me. You are required to turn in the old license when they reissue the new one. The DMV hires the disabled to man the desks and the young man who collected my old license remarked, "wow, who pinched your butt when they took your picture?" He was spot on and I laughed because it did describe my startled look. However, his supervisor chided him for making this remark so I asked her to look at the photo as well to see if she was in agreement. She sort of apologized to the guy and just told him to just keep these remarks to himself so he didn't hurt someone's feelings. Nicely handled but I did lean over and tell him he was right but to listen to his supervisor. We got a pass on license renewal at the DMV this year and they mailed us new ones using our old photo which was fine with me. I haven't parallel parked in so long, I am sure it would be a challenge but considering I took my first driving test on a 1960's circa station wagon and passed, I am sure I could manage with my car today. I really don't know of too many places that still have parallel parking in our area.

Yes, as Sandi says on another threa," dental distress week." Although here it's gone on for five months since my April fall. So, after 3 completed root canals last week and then a frenulumlectomy- who even knew there was such a word-? on Friday, I will be in the works in two weeks to begin the process for 4 splinted front teeth crowns- never knew there was such a thing as four joined crowns either. Told the dentist I hoped they wouldn't be gold and he laughingly assured me they'd be white.

The other thing is I hated the large family Rosh Hashanah dinners when I was growing up. Now I long to go back in time and see all those people who are forever gone. My cousin, and soul sister, Diane, who hated the gatherings too, laughed when I told her how I missed them. She lives in San Francisco and we go there every Thanksgiving for four days to be with her and her almost husband, Ross. I hate to stay with anyone so Gil and I stay at the Fairmont, walk up and down Nob Hill, and through Chinatown, go to movies at the Embarcadero and spend nights at restaurants with Diane and Ross, Thanksgiving day at their friend's house, Friday at their house with another Thanksgiving dinner.

But, COVID has us scared and we won't go this year. Think maybe we're worrying too much since we're triple vaxxed, but am crowd freaked, perhaps too cautious, too old to take a chance. Sad though.

My daughter is planning for me to go out there in May. So long since I have visited San Francisco, as well as Santa Rosa county. But I suspect I will be spending most of my time in Mendocino County.

My dental distress is in waiting for my lower denture. I finally called my insurance company, because they had said it was an insurance problem. Hopefully things will be resolved quickly now. I want to get a full mouth of teeth before I get a new picture on my DL. The old one had me in a wig that was decidedly uncool.

I don't like the pictures on Driver's License or any other license. They always look awful. As far as cats, we have 2 that own us. LOL

My photo is truly embarrassing--for the first time, they made me remove my glasses, push my hair off my forehead, and insisted I smile widely and show my teeth. It looks like a cross between a rictus and my facial expression while wincing. I will make a DMV appointment--at a different office--to get my Real ID (which we won't need for flying till 2023) and a photo "do-over."

L'shana tova, Judy! I so miss San Francisco. We will probably go to NYC in Nov. for our timeshare upgrade-pitch freebie, see a show or two, and visit our friend & my cousin. We'd have to rent a car to go up to Westchester to see her, and to drive out to the family graves on L.I. (Not gonna have enough time for winery-hopping on the North Fork). Bob wants to go to Vegas, where we actually own a timeshare. I hate Vegas, and it's currently unsafe (nobody is masking there). I don't gamble and I can't stand the cigarette smoke.

Ah, dentsl distress indeed. The periodontist this morning determined there was nothing wrong with the crown on my molar (and no cavity or infection); but there was a "4.5" pocket behind it that had some tartar that was trapping food--hence the inflammation a week ago. So he had to do a deep-scaling & root planing on that tooth. Alcohol might interfere with the topical antibiotic he applied at the end of the session. No hot food or drink till Sat. (warm is okay), nothing spicy for a few days, and nothing crunchy or crispy for a week. No chewing on that side either for the next 2 weeks. Natch, every food I'm allowed on the post-op sheet is either carby as all get-out or blah. I did get a vaccine-freebie Krispy Kreme glazed donut on the walk back to the parking garage, though. (My cheat for the night, maybe even for the week). I deliberately made my follow-up appt. for the perio's Skokie office instead of the Loop, so I won't be tempted by the siren song of the free donut.

Wren, I asked for the best out of three Pic, but both the ladies behind the desk giggled. Well one giggled, one smiled. Same result!! You get one go at it. I think they should have a stylist handy to help we ladies out if they are going to insist on one picture -- no glasses which I've worn for yrs. It is the first time I've ever had to take off glasses. I didn't ask why but now wish I would have.

I have read that glasses interfere with computer identification programs. "What should I bring to DMV to get a REAL ID?

    • Proof of Name and Date of Birth.
    • Proof of Legal Presence in the U.S.
    • Proof of Identity.
    • Proof of Name Change (if applicable)
    • Proof of Address (two forms)
    • Provide your Social Security Number." That is from the WI DMV website.

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with the breath of kindness, blow the rest away. -George Eliot

MC, I did wonder if maybe the reflections ( even if we could not see it ) might do something. So it is a facial recognition issue. Sounds right to me. Still, I am really turned off by the picture. I have not actually had much call ( maybe once ) in the last four yrs. of my old license to show it.

I guess new technologies' require that old standards will need changing. Just another sign of the times.

Glad for Friday and hope for a quiet week-end. Hope you all have the same. Continued good results for all who are doing tests, PT or other things to enhance health. Thinking of you Carole. Hope you are enjoying cool weather. Soon will be time to think about your return, huh !!!

Mary, your list seems like a lot more than I provided. Definitely change of name. I don't remember giving my SS#. Look for a website for a list so you don't have to make two trips like DH did. I do remember taking my birth and marriage certificates, passport, and proof of current address. Our local DMV seems to be least busy mid-late Thurs. afternoon. Mid-month is also better. Check ahead if you can make an appointment.

I have a recollection that we have discussed remedies for leg cramps. Anyone? Thanks.

Leg cramps - magnesium. Or old wives tale, place a bar of soap in the sheets at the foot of your bed. Also make sure you’re hydrated. I’ve taken magnesium and the cramps went away, then stopped taking it and they didn’t return. So who knows. Good luck

Lots of great magnesium foods, salmon, bananas, nuts, dark chocolate, legumes, and one of my favorites okra. I am really fond of okra mixed with diced tomatoes and corn. I have found that usually sticking one extra of these in my diet is usually enough to settle any cramps pretty quickly. Also, baked potatoes are great as well.

Nothing special planned today I do remember the day 20 yrs. ago. Dh and I turned on the news as always. We have always had news and morning coffee together. The shock was and still is indescribable. I can still feel the horror so strong I felt empty now and then -- devoid of all reason for such a thing to happen here in the U.S. I'm so happy to have a competent, caring, careful person in the WH now taking care of our country.

Yesterday was our final time to be a vendor at the farmer's market this summer. It was a beautiful day. Our sales were on the low end but we have done extremely well. DH will have to go home and get back to work in his shop this winter. His main challenge is getting the wood that can be turned into beautiful bowls.

If I were asked to give what I consider the most useful bit of advice for all humanity it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, "I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me."

Beauty of a day. Will be hotter, but not really uncomfortable. Have been having to feed my feral cats in a different spot to discourage the coyotes from coming. I still leave out some dog food -- but farther out from the wooded area. I do know the neighbors around the store will not appreciate the coyotes -- likely any number of them might call the Animal Warden and have the coyotes trapped. I'm not sure of just how that would go. I'm hoping since they would have to come way out in the open -- they may not stay close around.

Nothing else special planned. I always have things to do around here. Sounds like SIL will be back after the 20th. of this month. Of course we have all been missing him. He is such a great over-all handy-man. I am trying to keep his yard work in check. I did note all his hard work apparently encouraged enough food to bring the mole back that we thought was gone. Sigh !! They are not easy to deal with, so we will see how that goes.

We will soon be in the spate of time where we have to start mulching leaves. We use to take blowers and move all the leaves ( 2 acres worth ) through the yard and down the ravines on either side of us. Became too difficult for us -- so now mulching with the lawn tractor which would have been so much easier all along.

Hope you all have a great Sunday.

65 here at 3:00. Expected to get up to 68 by 5:00. We even had a smidge of rain this morning. Having lived in Houston for far too long, I can empathize with people having hot temperatures. I recall it being really miserable.

Yesterday, took a chance and went where I wasn't sure I would ever go again- to the movies. The Renaissance in Highland Park opened. The movie with Wilhem Dafoe,Oscar Isaac, about Abu Ghraib was excellent and it all felt safe, though the man sort of closer than 6' to Gil leaned one way and Gil the other. All wore masks. It felt like a bit of normal life had returned. It’s a relatively small theatre, only 3 people in the lobby and bathroom was empty. Trying to find the line between being too frightened of Covid, though triple vaxxed, and cautious, but still enjoying some outside of home stuff. Tomorrow I co- lead a Zoom short story class through Northwestern and then a beach funeral service for a very good friend

Nothing special planned today. I start caring ( for 4 days ) one of my friends cats in town. Since covid a lot of her travel stopped. She is close to my age but likes smaller trips -- like this time going to Tennessee. It has some pretty country there and she is going to a lake. Otherwise, just catching up as usual Helped Dh with a couple things yesterday so my plans for accomplishments went out the window while we worked on is. Happens often around here so I'll be catching up today.

Hope you all have a beautiful Monday.
