I don’t think Jackie is on Facebook. Also, she never posts with a cell phone.

I did a lot of walking yesterday and my knee did bother me during the night.

I’m hoping to pick up my repaired laptop today. It needed a new fan. I looked at notebooks yesterday at Sam’s Club, the type that students use in school. They’re like miniature laptops. When this laptop stops working, I won’t replace it with another one. I’ll get a notebook or a tablet. I think either would serve my purpose.

Fingers crossed that Jackie checks in today

That’s my guess, Petite. Remember she mentioned the possibility that she would miss Thanksgiving meal.

Carole - my husband loves his iPad. I still want a laptop because I spend lots of time doing genealogy and want a full keyboard.

Beautiful day for golf today but my knee is throbbing. Restarting acpuncture tomorrow. Usually 10 sessions keeps me good for 4-6 months.

Obviously something has happened to Jackie. Wish someone from her family would post.

Jackie was scheduled to get a heart valve replacement at the VA hospital down in Marion, near the southern tip of IL (she lives in the east-central part). It's extremely major surgery, and I doubt they'd release her to rehab at home without someone to help her. (Remember, she is used to being the helper)! The IL VA hospitals will not hesitate to admit patients, since they are not under the same pressure from insurers & investors to sacrifice safety for profit. I'm pretty sure she'll check back in here when she regains internet access. But I do hope the Moderators know how to contact her backchannel! I don't even know her last name, only that she is Jackie from Centralia.

I'm thinking that we senior BCO-ers might want to form a "care chain" to check in on those geographically fairly close, from whom we've not heard in a while. (E.g., has anyone in the DC/Baltimore area heard from Trill)? Maybe we can do so by PMing our e-mails, Facebook avatar or url, websites if we have them, or phone numbers?

I am using my laptop this morning after two weeks of relying on my phone as a mini computer. The loud buzz is gone, thanks to the replacement of the fan.

I iced my knee a couple of times yesterday. I'm considering a trip to the gym to walk on a treadmill. Or maybe a walk in the neighborhood. Both my sisters have knee issues and they told me their physical therapists were big advocates of icing after exercise.

Taco, I was an avid golfer for years, since 2000 when I switched from tennis to golf. The last few years I've lost my golf swing and the enthusiasm for the game has waned. My current knee injury gives me another excuse not to play.

I think Sandy has explained Jackie's absence. I certainly hope Jackie is doing well and getting good care.

Saturday I was going to the local bike mechanic's. I had gone too far, and took a u-turn. My bike and i had an argument with the curb, and I was a major loser. I sort of sat up and my right foot was in the right pannier. I surveyed it some more, and it was pointing the wrong direction. Two people offered assistance, and I asked them to call for an ambulance. I asked them to go over to my friend's garage, and he has the bike. They put a foam rubber splint on it. X-ray did not reveal anything lining up with my symptoms, so they did a CAT scan. The rear part of the tibia is sort of crushed, and there is a lot of soft tissue damage on the left side. I had my first visit to the orthopedist today, and now have a hinged brace with all sorts of velcro.

Mary, bad news about your bike accident. Hope the injury heals well.

I walked 25 minutes at a slower pace than I usually walk for exercise. I chuckled to myself when my uninjured knee bothered me at first more than the injured one. Later at home I iced both knees and they both are none the worse for using them.

It was such a beautiful day that it was a pleasure being outside

I hope so. I only have a few degrees of movement, and it is set at a comfortable angle. I visit here only with my laptop, and the seating here is uncomfortable.

Tippy is adjusting well, on tieout for making poopies and pee. A friend offered to take him for a walk. He was scared, but I told him it was ok. I guess he ran most of the time. I cannot let another person take care of him, given that reaction.

They gave me crutches, but I prefer a walker. So I will be quiet for a few weeks.

Oh, Mary, so sorry to hear that! (It has strengthened my resolve not to try to learn to ride a bike, despite some snarky young Greta-Thunberg-esque bike warrior on NextDoor asking everyone who criticizes bikers' safety-violating behavior "why don't u ride?"). It's illegal here for anyone over age 12 to ride a bike on the sidewalk (if there are no bike lanes or "shared streets" you're supposed to walk your bike--per posted signs--until you can reconnect with a safe roadway to ride). I used to try to ride my mountain bike (with 20" training wheels) in my 40s, but I never felt safe doing so and gave it up. It's not just cyclists terrorizing sidewalk pedestrians (without so much as an "on your left" or a bell)--I've nearly been mowed down by skateboarders & people on scooters (and I don't mean the mobility kind).

IMHO, just because someone reduces their carbon footprint, it doesn't give them carte blanche to blow through stop signs and even red lights, much less endanger pedestrians & dogs on sidewalks. People need to accept that they don't have a right to do whatever they want if it endangers others, just because it's inconvenient to obey the law. City-living requires giving up some advantages of living in a small town or suburb.

Just out of curiosity--anyone else here find themselves typing "z" instead of quote marks ("z" is too close to the L shift key), commas instead of periods, "s" or "d" when they mean "a" (or "a" for "s")? It doesn't happen on my iPad's "smart" keyboard or phone onscreen keyboard--just the MacBook. I often find myself closing one eye when typing or writing online (I have "convergence-insufficiency" since childhood), and having long nails (and a cat occasionally standing on my L wrist) doesn't help. It's getting to where I have to enlarge the text on the screen so I can catch my typos before I post them--and alas, sometimes after).

Currently waiting for a perishable & valuable UPS package supposed to be delivered between 2-9pm--all afternoon, according to the tracking map the truck has come within a block of my house before going elsewhere. It's so frustrating that there is no way to contact drivers or have the local distribution center contact them. We want to go to dinner tonight, and fear porch pirates. (We don't have a doorbell or camera--but judging from all the videos posted on NextDoor of porch-pirates getting away scot-free, the only defense is to be by the door, able to see the truck if it pulls up, until delivery is made and then quickly haul it inside). We had a package from Macy's porch-pirated a year ago--the mailman saw it but did nothing except tell me, "hey I just saw someone steal something off your porch and run away." Fortunately, the package contained shirts Bob didn't want because they lacked pockets, so I just asked for and got a refund.

Carole - DH says he has never known a golfer who enjoyed golf so much when they play so badly - but I persist. Our Niners group is small and not very competitive. Our goal is to just have fun and I usually do. It was my life-saver during Covid. Played in the same 4-some in separate carts and we were very careful when we went in to post as we all have high risk husbands. We are all now boosted and feeling generally comfortable. To anyone's knowledge, we only have one couple at our country club who is "immunized" instead of "vaccinated" and I stay clear.

Mary - I’m so sorry you ended up with an injury. It’s nice you had assistance with getting an ambulance and having your bike secured. Hoping you heal up quickly.

Sandy - I make more typos than anyone I know. I key “fir” instead of for. I get a picture of a fir tree 🌲. I’ve told my girlfriends I’m thinking of substituting the tree for the word “for” because I’m tired of correcting it. I blame my iPhone, my android autocorrected it, IPhone hasn’t even given me “for” as an option. Also, I’d give the mods or anyone here in the group my cell number. It would be nice to know Jackie is resting comfortably.

Our washer and dryer tower was delivered and installed today. I did 3 loads of laundry. Funny what makes me happy. These new washers weighing clothes and adjusting water and time, I’m not used to. Seemed to fill very slow as well. But my clothes are clean and I will just roll with it. Sooner or later I’ll get used to it.

Tonight is trash night and large items can also be put curbside. Our LazyBoy leather reclining sofa, which turned out to be bonded leather, is out on the curb. Glad to see it go!

A gf and I do a drive around the neighborhood to see what’s out to reuse & recycle for our own purpose. Tonight was like a jackpot for 3 ladders (6 & 8 foot, as well as extension) and I also got a bike that my nieces daughter will be able to use onher visit in 3 weeks. We think someone renting a condo must have been evicted, there was everything at the disposal area to fill a house. (condos have 1 area; villas put items at the curb)

It’s been sunny and warm daily. I’ve been doing my floor PT and getting to the gym for elliptical and recumbent bike. Therapist said to stay at what I’ve been doing, due to my lack of PT while traveling down here. A set back but I’m feeling ok. Shorter gait, and after a little while I’m kind of walking normal, but I’m slow.

Cindy, we just replaced a Lazy Boy "leather" sofa just like yours. We need to get it out to the curb.

Taco, I wish I had a golf group like yours. I'm a member of an 18 hole group that plays on Tuesdays and Fridays but I haven't been playing. I also paid my dues to the women's golf group that has an organized event on Wednesdays but didn't play once all year. In MN I play with a 9 hole women's league that is more my speed. They don't even have handicaps. I am signed up to go to the Christmas party golf luncheon at our country club on the 15th. I can manage lunch without embarrassing myself!

Today I plan to go to the gym for the 1 pm Chair Yoga class. I will be careful not to make any moves that would be detrimental for my healing knee. It will be good to get out among other older women.

My La-Z-Boy "leather" recliner ("leather-match," aka "leather everywhere you touch") had some of the finish peel off a spot on the L arm (which is leather) which Happy likes to use as his launchpad from the daybed to my lap. But seeing as how it was a floor sample and I got it for a steal, when company comes over I just put an "antimacassar" (aka "fancy schmatta") on it.

Judy, we found an amazing new Italian restaurant in our neighborhood--2-1/2 blocks away! It's called Regalia, and it's the best Italian food we've had in the city since Spiaggia went out of business. In fact, it's as good as anything we've had in Rome. (Makes our old standby Calo look like Pizza Hut). Pricy, but ginormous portions. Perfect pasta, risotto, lamb shank, appetizers and lovely thoughful wine list. Even the background music (Gen-Z or young millennials softly singing 1980s covers) was conducive to eating. When I awoke this morning, I suspected I'd either hallucinated or dreamt it--until I opened the fridge doors and saw the leftovers. It's its "soft-open" week, so it doesn't have a website or phone number--I discovered it by watching the space as it was being built out and then I walked in the other day after the menu was posted on the door and a sandwich-board sign out front said "Walk-Ins Welcome 4-11pm." Once the opening is official and it gets an online presence, I wouldn't be surprised to find it'll be a very tough table to get. I'm hoping it'll have the capacity to handle our party of 8-9 for New Year's Eve. We used to go to Cellars' 7:30 seating and then walk back to our place for champagne at midnight; but Cellars closed permanently on Labor Day, after 15 years.

The view out the window this morning is eerie because of the thick fog. DH left a while ago to go and play golf. I returned to Chair Yoga at the gym yesterday and my knee didn't bother me. Today I plan to go to a more active class.

Still no word from Jackie. Sending her hugs.

Mary, I hope you're doing well recovering from your bike accident.

For people in this area, Covid is evidently over. I was in a department store and a supermarket yesterday and was one of the few people wearing a mask.

Sandy, I laughed when I saw your post this morning. After you first mentioned Regalia the other day, I told our neighbor friends who go to fine restaurants all over the world( pre COVID.) Gil and I vegetarian are more the wooden booth diner diners, though have been to Les Nomades, long ago Perroquet and La Francais. So neighbors, Gil and I made a date to go Saturday night to Regalia and I said I’d make the reservation. I spent two hours trying to find a phone number or website. I’m good at finding information because before being a psychotherapist, I was a reference librarian. But nada, no phone number.I had apparently forgotten that in your earlier post you said they had no phone or website. Stymied. So we decided to go at 4:00 on Saturday. I take your recommendation seriously and can’t wait. I will definitely have the Caprese and then we’ll see. Gil loves Italian food and has a t shirt bought on Taylor St. that reads, “ Life’s too short not to be Italian,”( though he is not.)With these same friends went to Pomeroy in Winnetka, good, not great. Last Monday went with DS, Tony, to Rooh on W. Randolph, fine dining Indian, but very noisy, filled with non mask wearing 30 year olds, not well distanced. The service, the food, excellent, servers all masked.

Sandy, Darn you. Now I'm hungry for Italian food and it's only 10:30 here.

Thanks, Di! Please keep us posted--hope Jackie is simply recuperating.

Judy, tell them Sandy & Dr. Andina sent you. if you have a long wait for a table--or want an espresso or cappuccino (I can even do decaf & vegan!) afterward, PM me and I'll give you my address. You should be able to park on my block no sweat (or, if Bob is coming home very late tomorrow, as per usual on Hospital Hell Weekend, I'll open our garage). Should warn you that I have cats, in case you're allergic. Alternatively, I could walk over & join you at the bar for an aperitif.

Just found out that the long-time Chicago upscale restaurant Yoshi's Cafe is closing next weekend--40 years ago, it pioneered bringing high-end dining (and fusion cuisine) to city neighborhoods (Lakeview/Boystown was not yet a wealthy trendy area when the place first opened). Chef/owner Yoshi Katsumura passed away of cancer not long ago, and the new owners faced the triple challenges of pandemic restrictions, staffing shortages, and competition from other places that have trod the trail it blazed.

Reader, there is no such thing as a "good" travel experience at ORD--except last July when I awaited my flight to NYC, the food court Mexican counter was able to make me a totally-keto omelet, and champagne salon opened at 7am.

I spent the day, or wasted the day depending on how you look at it, trying to put in a new ceiling light in my laundry room. The short story is, I couldn’t get it to work. The long story is the screws provided we’re too short; trip to get new screws; those screws too long on one side; the actual electrical box installed 16-17 years ago is not level; and then the sun was setting. I threw in the towel. Our neighbor, friend, handyman will stop by tomorrow morning to take a look. I’m more disappointed than anything, that I couldn’t do it.

It was a beautiful sunny day. The rest of the week temps are going up into mid 80’s. It sounds like humidity going up too by Wednesday. I might have to get out to hang my Christmas light ahead of the humidity.

Hope everyone has a good week. And we hear that Jackie is doing well.
