Hey wren, I'll check out that book and see if it helps me with my flowers.
Oh Puffin, so sorry to hear about about your MIL. Hugs to all of you as you work through this difficult time.

Nice day today. I took some food for noon dinner to my mother's house and my sister and her dh joined us. My sister brought home-made iced tea and some garlic bread to heat up in the toaster oven. I had made spaghetti and meat sauce and a good tossed salad. We also brought a carrot cake that dh bought at the bakery in our local supermarket. Carrot cake is his favorite and we didn't get one for his birthday on the 8th. So we called this a late birthday cake.
My mother's a/c didn't seem to be cooling her house so we took the cover off the inside condenser and, sure enough, the coils were all frozen. This has happened before and indicates that her a/c compressor is running short of Freon. She called and left a message for her a/c repairman, the fellow who installed the system years ago. He is usually really good about responding to her calls so I'm hoping he will come out or send someone out tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile we set up a fan to blow on the frozen coils and the ice had thawed in a couple of hours. By then it was 81 degrees in the house but bearable. Before we left, we turned the a/c back on and the house was cooling off.
Tomorrow morning I hope to get outside early and do some yard work. I have 4 bales of pine straw left to mulch a bed that I haven't gotten around to yet.
Puffin, thinking about you and your dh and his family. Also thinking about Blondie, Cammi, Sandra and Mike. Chevy, how are you? You haven't been dropping in to chat lately.

I haven't been on for a while and read all the news. Yesterday I walked a mile in the Plano Komen Race. It was a long walk since I'd had abdominal surgery 3 weeks ago. It felt good to accomplish it though. Today my stepson's family was here. The grandgirls did a "play" for me. They decided to be Egyptian water princesses using a variety of props from shoes, baskets, a hard hat and all the dog's toys. They are quite imaginative. I asked why they were Egyptian princesses and it turned out they'd read a book about the pyramids. Busy day.

Hi, Teacher. Congrats on doing the walk. The little girls sound cute. Good to have you check in.
Happy Monday to everyone.

Teacher....thank you for doing the walk. Should we do another weather report. I hope Sandra's area is safe. I do know San Antonio has had some flooding. In fact, based on what our weatherperson said today --- almost everyone ( and that is a huge portion of the mid to eastern U.S. could easily have flooding. The storms will continue for a few days so that plays a big part.
Otherwise -- it is just sort of sticky here with the humidity from all the dampness that is hanging around in the air as we wait for the next deluge. Hoping to get the big, big, tree branch off from over the top of the garage but the guy hasn't showed as yet. Makes you wonder if anyone wants to work. Oh well, he said he had to wait for his girl-friend -- just didn't say exactly why. That has given me some pause for thought. I usually NEVER had to base my work career on whether or not a boy-friend had to be around to accompany me. Times change -----.
Thinking of you all and hoping you will not have weather issues where you are.
Blessings

Jackie, as I read your post, it is pouring rain outside. My appointment with the dermatologist is at 1:45 so I'm hoping the downpour has subsided by then. I went out and did yard work this morning as planned. The sun was shining. I took a short breather and was sitting on the swing on the porch when all of a sudden I saw drops of water falling on the patio. Sure enough we had a little shower with the sun still shining.
I don't agree with the author of your quote for today. I would prefer not to face the dangers.
Greetings and hugs for everyone.

Carole, I don't like the dangers either, but do think I'm a better person for my face-off with them and finding positive answers. I learn so much when I get the best of something rather than cowering and wishing it would go away.
Speaking of which lo and behold --- the dead tree by the garage is now laying on the ground ( we saved money by dealing with the aftermath ourselves ) for just $125.00. I was overwhelmed. Wednesday ( overwhelmed again ) the tree man will come back and take out the nearly dead hickory tree which is very, very tall. That one will cost $250.00. We are getting a good break on it as he wants the tree ( it's hickory ) after he gets it down as he will use it in his barbecue. If it went down --- it would do massive damage to our house --- we feel so fortunate that we decided to try someone else ---- thought the first guy was too high --- and so facing the un-certainty turned out so much better for us. I have to admit though I was really worried.
Anyway, we may have wind gusts today during out storm so we needed to find someone with a bucket truck to make quick work of the dead tree. It had already shed a super big branch and did some damage to our garage. This guy said it was good that he got it as the thing was wiggling ( giving him a bit of the willies too ) while he was trying to notch it to get it to fall away from the roof. He went ahead and took it all the way to the ground -- we only contracted for him to top it and get the few two or three big huge branches off. We have another friend who loves to cut up wood --- and he was going to come over and deal with the tree once it was topped and couldn't damage the garage anymore. Now --- he will just cut the rest of it up --- I can live with that.
I love it when things work out that look ominous, if not impossible on our budget. By the way --- I am concerned about the tree that isn't cut yet. It has a slight amt. of leaves so isn't bad like the other tree -- but when the strange wind gusts come -- you just have to hope and pray they don't upset the apple cart. I'm sure we will be fine, but a little worry ( enough to be cautious since I park under that tree ) should keep things up properly. I likely will park closer to the garage I think. I'll see you all later.

Good afternoon, ladies. This morning I am still making slow progress on my yard project. I also made a large pot of ice tea, mango popsicles, gazpacho, vacuumed and steamed my floors and did two loads of laundry. This afternoon I may go out and trim a ceanothus that is badly in need of cutting, as is a rhody in my front yard - but as the house faces south/west, and it's supposed to be in the high 80's today, those little projects will probably wait until tomorrow....
Hubby is out fishing. He had a salmon on this morning after fighting it for about 15 minutes, it was about 6 feet from the boat - ready to by netted -- and a seal came up and took it. He was SOOOOO angry/bummed. It's bad enough to have that happen when fishing is good, but it has been really exceptionally poor.

Jackie, glad you have dealt with one of your tree problems. Hope the other problem gets handled before it causes you trouble.
GG, I read the second paragraph of your post to dh about the seal stealing the salmon. What a story!

Hey garden....tell your hubby that I understand his frustration over the seal getting his salmon. When were were fishng n the gulf this winter, the pelicans kept trying to take our fish as we reeled them in. They got one of ours. I was furious! :-) We still went out the next day though and fished again!

Apprehensive about a tropical storm coming this way. When we'd lived in this house 3 weeks, one moved in and the resulting rain meant the den ceiling fell in. Turned out there was a crack around a vent pipe. I certainly hope everything is still sealed because I don't want to have to call my husband and tell him "the sky is falling" again.

Morning all
Sorry I haven't been on for a while, but have been dealing with another major upset. My DD- the one I live with in Fl, broke her ankle late Sat afternoon. We went to the ER where my son works, but of course he had left minutes before we arrived. We were only in the waiting room for less than 15 min, before being taken back. Both the on call Dr and paramedic that put the "cast " on knew Tim and contacted him while we were there to insure him they were taking good care of his big sister. That Dr said that he wasn't an orthopedist, but from the X-rays taken, the broken bone was not weight bearing and should not be at all complicated. WRONG!!! When we saw an actual orthopedist yesterday he ordered one additional X-Ray, and gave us the bad news that 2 bones are broken, one is weight bearing and she needs surgery with plates and screws and recovery will be 3 months minimum after surgery. We are going for a second opinion tomorrow. Today, we are going to try to find a walker to replace crutches as she had already fallen using the crutches. We are also going to her work, to see if they will allow her to work from home. If not, I will have to drive her back and forth each day and it is a 35-40 min drive each way without traffic. We also have to find her some pants that will fit over cast. Right now, she had only one pair of sweats that work.
At least I am not bored anymore

I need to RANT
I am livid. The DD, SIL and his son have been here for 2 weeks from Florida. David Jr. is an absolute BRAT he is 13. This morning they were packing up. DD was putting things together out of the bed room and elsewhere. SIL asked David Jr. what Alice was doing and he told him she was watching TV. She was packing and then would set for a minute and get up and do some more. SIL came in and jumped all over DD. Told him she had been packing bags and sending them out with David Jr. When David Jr came back into the house and we were alone I let him have it. I told him he was a spoiled brat always had to have his way and he was a trouble maker. He never helps out and I was sick of it. He was not welcome back to my home until he decided to grow up. I will probably send my SIL an e-mail later also.
David Jr.'s Dad does not make him do anything, they stay up all night and play on the X box. I would not let them bring it to my house. He has all D's in school. I would like to take a 2X4 to them both. My daughter is not without fault, she does the best she can. I just now want to lay down and cry for the rest of the day.
I had a hard first two days off the med. I was very depressed. It was better until all of this.
Thanks for letting me Rant Hugs

Mommarch, I'm sorry the visit caused you stress. That's something you don't need right now. You have enough to cope with. Hope you can put the bratty kid out of your thoughts. Hugs to you.

Tues. is $2.99 bargains at Fresh Market. Chicken breasts and ground chuck. I bought some of both, probably my last shopping trip to the store before we depart next Friday.
Just now when I arrived home, I turned on the Food Channel. The Barefoot Contessa was making cooking packets with fish. I thought about you, Bedo. She was using parchment paper.
Dinner menu hasn't made itself known yet. Maybe Greek Lemon potatoes.

Mommarch -- whew !!! Good for you getting that off your chest --- not only to us but to David Jr., as well. It is something he needed to hear. This young man's father has no idea what a dis-service he is doing by letting his son be pretty much in charge. I will hope that some eye-opening took place and that things might change a little for the better. One never knows and can just only hope.
It is far different these days then when we were raised -- and I have to admit we didn't raise our kids as well as I would have liked. They are not the worst, but far from the best too. My kids fell into the generation where disciplinary principals changed a lot. You were basically "discouraged" from spanking etc. The kids knew this and took some advantage.
I hope you are able to get rested now that your company is gone. Sure sorry it had to end on an un-pleasant note. Hopefully, everything will get better soon.
Anne, I'm so sorry for your daughter. Sure was good you were back there --- as she really needs you. You're right -- no boredom for you, young lady. I do hope that things get straightened out and that there are as few complications as possible.
Well, we are on our way to Salem. Tomorrow I will be working extra --- from 9:45 to about 4 p.m. It is good for me. So, have to get some of my running done today. Also have to call the tree guy. Don't know that he could do it tomorrow, but at least we could make a "date" I think.
Will see you all later.
Blessings,
Jackie

Anne, I, too, am sorry about your daughter's injury. As Rosanna Dana said, "It's always SOMETHING!"
I'm very tired tonight. I went to the gym this morning. After breakfast, I took a few clubs to the driving range and hit some golf balls. That went pretty well but by the time I finished practicing putting, my foot told me it was time to sit down. Next I went to Fresh Market and took advantage of $2.99 specials on chicken breasts (no antibiotics) and ground chuck. Then this afternoon I went to Belk dept. store and took advantage of the senior discount of 20 percent off most items, even sales items. I got some good buys on three pairs of cropped pants and three blouses, two of them a little dressy.
Wishing everyone a good evening.

Your shopping trip sounded great Carole. I love bargains -- but seldom shop enough for clothes to do too well. Still --- finding great things just makes you feel good.

Jackie, I'm not a good clothes shopper. I lack that knack of being able to buy items that go with a lot of things already hanging in the closet.

I make a wardrobe plan every season. Then I see where the holes are and what I need. Doesn't mean I can find it though. Been looking for navy blue slacks all spring & summer. Nowhere to be had. Of course, if I wanted to spend the money I could go to LLBean or I could get off my butt and make them. Don't hold your breath. The plan does show you that you need something to go with something else. I was a travel agent for 20 years and all my clothes were for trips. I carry on, so everything had to mix and match.

Hi everyone!!!
I'm new here and not very good at posting, but I've been reading all of your comments, suggestions, daily activities, and oh so hilarious happenings!!! All of you are phenomenal and amazing and so very positive about things that we can't control. What I've read that truly inspires me is the fact that we all have or had breast cancer, and yet the emphasis is not on that, but on our daily lives and how we live with the "C" word and go on with what makes us happy!!! I don't quite fall into the "older" people with BC as I'm only 58, but I honestly feel like this is the thread that I like the most. In reading your posts it makes me think of what's truly important, and that having breast cancer is truly a "bump" in the road. I'm complete with my treatment of DCIS: 2 Lump, rads, and now on Arimidex, and I try so very hard to put this behind me, but many days it pops up again! I'm not on FACEBOOK or any other computer website, so it's kind of amazing even to me that I've found this one, and this thread to be so inspiring!!! I too am a grandmother of a beautiful little 3 yr old little girl (Aubrey) and her precious little brother (Brantley) that keeps me going even though I don't get to see them very much as they live in NC at Camp Lejeune. I live and was born just outside of Washington, DC. I enjoy so much of what many of you do, gardening, crocheting (I'm not that good at it), reading, cutting out coupons, however, my favorite thing is buying for the 2 little stinkers!! My daughter says that I buy way too much, but because I love couponing I get many, many things very cheap and sometimes FREE!!! My DH and I love to go to Estate Sales on Saturdays and there again I buy things for the 2 special little people that are my world!!! To little Aubrey she says, "grandma bring me presents" and grandma BRINGS her presents!! My DH is even worst----he bought her an expensive swing set and one of those motorized cars!!! Now…… it couldn't be the 6 volt, it had to be the 12 volt, and she has now learned how to drive it----around in circles only!!!!! My daughter says in few years she'll probably ask for a BMW or Mercedes and no doubt, he will get it!!!! Geesh, we are hopeless!!!
Thanks to all of you for your concern, support, and caring for each other!! I look forward to getting to know many of you and sharing the daily ups and downs of living!!!! …..and BC, it stinks, but having friends that have had it and go through it with you, make it a heck of lot easier!!!

Cindielm,
I can't stay this morning -- early work and no quote till later, but I so wanted to welcome you to the thread we who are here love so much. You are the perfect age to be here --- why you can even find out where the creaks and groans may turn up if you hang around with the "oldies" but we are "goodies" as well. At any rate, we are delighted you want to spend wonderful time ( every day is a treasured gift ) with us. In time lots will get on here and say hi too............my work day will be later than usual, about 4 p.m. or so ---- but I'll definitely be back. See you then.
Hi to everyone else and will see you all later too.
Blessings,
Jackie

Welcome Cindielm
You are right, you have found a wonderful group. This is a safe place for us all, to share and vent when necessary, but much more often to just share the details of our lives as we adjust to life post BC. Like you, my greatest joy in life is my grandchildren. I am a 66 year old widow with 5 children and 6 grandchildren. My oldest DD (dear daughter) lives near Atlanta, Ga with my two oldest grandsons. The oldest one and I have an incredibly close bond. He is going into 11th grade, taking all AP Classes and maintaining straight A's. His brother, going into 8th grade, is also a straight A student in all gifted classes. I split my time between them and my home in Ft. Laud, Fl, where I have lived since 1973 (this house since 1978). Here I live with Dd#2, and her 12 year old son , who once again is a gifted, straight a student, going into 7th grade. Then DD#3 lives about 15 minutes from me and she is the mother of my first, absolutely incredible granddaughter, who will be 10 this summer, and a 6 year old always surprising grandson. My oldest son, my second child, lives near Charlotte, NC and is the father of an almost 2 year old girl, who is indescribably adorable. My youngest son is engaged, so no kids yet.
I travel between So Fla and Atlanta, with side trips to Charlotte when in Atlanta. I was DX and treated at Emory University in Atlanta, and couldn't have received better or more loving at home care from my daughter and her husband.
I am very excited because for the 4th of July, I will have all 5 children and all 6 grandchildren here with me. It will be the first time since my husband of 42 years passed3 years ago. At the time, of course, Lucia wasn't even born.
I look forward to getting to know you better and having you as part of our circle

Welcome Cindielm! We're not fussy about numbers, so if you feel you fit in you do. I have 4 GS (grandsons). One is leaving today for ROTC training at Ft Knox. One is almost done with college and two are in grade school. I'm hoping to see the younger ones over July 4th. I'm taking painting lessons in my retirement. Not intending to be awesome but would like to sketch places we go.
