Hi Merilee....I'm so sorry.....Did you quit taking the Tamoxifen then?  Did your Oncologist believe you?  And how is your right ear?   Did you get hearing aids?..... and one more, are you taking anything now?  Jeannette

    GirlFriday,

changing diet is a dramatic feat-- specially if you like the same foods I like (chocolate, spaghetti, ice cream, coffee)..

thats why I am really proud of my mother for changing her diet 180 degrees in such a short span of time (2 months)..

it took me 6 months to wane myself, and now am back to coffee and slowly going back to ice cream.. arggh I have to start again I know..

Merilee-Good to see you again. Hope you are doing well.

For those of you who are dealing with doctors who are not listening-Here is some advice I got from hearing a doctor speak about when to fire your doctor. He said remember we need to be consumers first, and patients second. As long as we are paying, we have a right to ask our doctors to listen. If they won't, go find another doctor who will. I doctor shopped for quite a while. I have not found one who meets all my needs, so I go to different ones for different things. And I am not afraid to say adios to any doctor who insists I do something that is going to make me feel worse. I not longer go to my orginal surgeon because he refused to accept that I wanted to do thermography instead of mammography. It is my body, not his. I no longer go to my former PC because she does not feel she can monitor me. She insists I go to the onc, whom I only met twice, so I found doctors who do. I liked all these doctors. They just did not listen to my needs, so I found doctors who are about getting me well, not just "monitoring" me.

Does anyone know what supplements can help your White Blood Count go up.  My went down during radiaiton (low side of normal range)  and has gone up a little since finishing but what supplements will help with that?  My red blood count is also on the low side of normal so I am going to take iron for that but have no clue on the WBC.

GirlFriday:  Actually, eggs are really good for you!!!  I should edit this to add, if cholesterol is a problem then use egg whites, but I prefer the Jumbo Brown Organics and if you raise chickens, well, then even better bagawk!

Sherry & Nikola ~ I found this for you.    Deanna

"...yogurt, garlic, shiitake mushrooms and foods high in zinc like beef, pork, lobster, oysters, clams and salmon in your diet. These are known to increase white blood cell count. Zinc is a mineral that is vital in building up your immune system. As an antioxidant, it helps in getting rid of free radicals that make the body more susceptible to infectious diseases."

Another one in the "I modified my diet for better health" club!

I cut out sugar, most dairy (just cultured dairy these days), and wheat (gluten intolerance).  I can honestly say that I feel 1000% better on this eating plan, but I sure do miss my ice cream (which I still have occasionally), brownies, french pastries, etc, etc. I really do miss those things dearly, but whenever I've consumed gluten, I pay for it with such a high price that it's really, truly not worth it.

As MBJ stated, the "white" foods seem to increase things like fibroids, but also bowel intolerances, skin problems, and diabetes. My father, a diabetic, is basically on the same type of diet I follow.

Good luck to those embarking on any "white elimination" diet. You're going to need it to cut all of those yummy things out, but remember it pays off!

Dlb823 and MBJ thanks for the info.  I had looked up foods and it said to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.  I already do this that  is why I was wondering about supplements.  So sounds like I need to add some zinc into my diet.  Thanks,

    hi marianna and all,

I so wanted to ask this question for so long.. someone told me that cancer (breast cancer) that is starts from an out of whack digestive system..?

Ruth:  My dr. has me take 5 pills 3 x daily Wobenzyme to help with this.  Expensive, but very important.  Probiotics are good for this, too.  So are any fermented foods.

Ruth, I don't know about that... I've heard it's just something to do with our cells...when something goes wrong, instead of getting rid of them like we always do, they multiply, divide, and sometimes they turn into cancer.  No-one really can say for sure...

Your Mom's digestive problems and eating habits, & whatever she was taking, probably caused her other problems.  My SIL took laxatives all her life....finally could not go by herself.  Just had her colon removed, and 1 foot of it reattached to her small intestine.   Her colon had actually "died" she said....So now she has lost about 50 pounds, and still has problems "going"....  At least my problems could be fixed......

Yes, taking care of yourself, eating the right foods makes a difference with EVERYthing.  And your Mom is better now?

I ordered online testing from Canary Club. "Womens Combo Kit" it tested the female hormones, complete thyroid and adrenals. The test is blood spot and saliva testing that you do 18-21 after your menses.

ps they send u your results online, I think it was around 200.00 dollars

Vivre...that was interesting about choosing our Doctors!  I don't have much of a good relationship with my Oncologist, I mean she isn't very friendly.... She only acknowledges the fact that I lost my hearing, and that I quit the Tamoxifen...and then says when I see her in 3 months, we will discuss the Femara.  I don't WANT to....!  I wonder if I HAVE to see her, in order to order my Mammograms...or could I go back to my Radiologist whom I just love?  Is there some sort of protocol here?   Maybe I should call my Insurance, and see what I can do.  Maybe after I ask my Radiologist, whom I am supposed to see in 6 months, SHE will tell me if SHE can order my Mammograms, and not the Oncologist.

My PC basically told me the same thing...that is the Oncologist that takes care of me from now on....  I don't think I like ANY of them.    Are all you gals going to an Oncologist for your blood tests?

Chevy I did not like my first MO so I found a new one that I like.  My RO I will see for a 3 month follow up and then he will release me.  I love my BS so I am continueing to see her.  She will order test if I need her too.  When I called her to tell her I did not like the first MO she offered to do all my followups if I did not want to look for another MO.  She said she was comfortable with it unless my cancer came back then she would insist on me getting an MO, but luckily I found one I like so at least for a while I will see both the MO and BS.  My MO does blood work and reviews mammo's and MRI's .  My BS looks at everything as well.

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question, but I try to avoid "white" foods in favor of whole wheat. But I'm reading here that some of you are cutting out wheat as well? I thought grains are supposed to be good for you (that whole good carb vs bad carb thing -- whole wheat bread, brown rice...)?

regarding zinc -- brown rice has phytic acid and interferes with zinc absorption.  Remedy:  soak your brown rice before cooking.  Start the night before or even a little bit of soaking will help if time is short.  It will make rice more digestible also.

You guys, I hate to sound stupid here, but who is the MO....and the RO?  My BS cut me loose after the one year follow-up....And my PC doctor didn't want to follow up with anything!  Why am I so afraid to  tell them how I feel?  And who I want & don't want!

Is the MO, the medical Oncologist, and the RO is the Radiologist?  I'm thinking this is possible.Wink

the closer food is to its natural state the better...a look at the so-called caveman diet is one based on food that was natural to eat...vegetables, nuts, beans, lightly cooked meat and fish-proteins, seeded fruits. ...there were no processing plants and additives centuries ago...no loafs of bread, no chips...I can't cut it all out but am much more aware of what I put in my mouth and my family's for that matter. It is a good idea to pause before putting something in your body a food product that has an expiration date a year or more in the future....I was upset when learning "organic" is abused-yes, not everything labeled as such is such. It has become so popular over the years that unfortunately, like anything, there is fraud. The best meat i buy is from the local aisian grocery- their farm is just outside of Houston-hell, you can go see the livestock an hour before it is butchered...the first time I made chicken from there my hubby freaked and said THIS TASTES TOO FRESH...anyhoo...i can't devote 20 hours of each day to chasing down the perfect food for i believe it does not exist...but I can be sensible and aware...but if anyone wants to take away my dark chocolate with chili pepper bar they will have to pry it out of my hands....

chevy-  Yes, MO is Medical Oncologist and RO is Radiology Oncologist.  I remember how bewildered I was with all the abbreviations, thought I was in a foreign land!  If you type "abbreviations for newbies" in the search box you will find a thread that has all the abbreviations.  I am not crazy about my MO, but trust my RO implicitly and like my BS.  My BS orders my mammos and US and my RO follows me too.  I think you can be followed by any or all of your medical team.  You may need referrals, but they don't withold them.  I was thinking you have the perfect reason to not do what your MO says, tell her you didn't hear it!  No disrespect intended, it would serve her right for dismissing your severe SE from Tamoxifen!

vivre-  I love your statement that you want doctors to not only monitor you, but help you get healthy! Absolutely!

Sherry my white blood count has teetered on just the low side of normal also. It was just below at DX...then came back up....dropped a bit but not out of range....and then last two blood tests just low side of normal again. MO said she's not really worried about it because the other numbers that correlate with it look good but that we would keep an eye on it...as with everything else. My iron does the same....up and down. (I know what's causing that....monthly) But, I mentioned the whole Iron thing feeding and helping cancer cells divide (I think MBJ posted about it) and she said yes, there has been some discussion on that and some believe we should be in an iron deprived state and others not. She said she thinks being in an iron deprived state is not healthy but we do want to be careful to not take too much iron. Such balance. How to be sure?? She does bloodwork every 3 months to check that and other things.

Question....I am going to start taking DIM but have read here that it can mess with the thyroid? I don't need new problems....ugh. So, do I need to take Iodine to counteract that? I have some Kelp on order....if yes, how much?

    Joan,

If you are not gluten intolerant, wheat products are perfectly fine. We should get grains in our diet, but our diet should not be mostly grain based. The USDA does not have this right, and in fact teaches children that we need mostly grains to stay healthy, when that is simply not true. We need more vegetables, protein, then a small amount of grains, dairy.  When I saw the latest food pyramid, my jaw about hit the floor, it was so incorrect. It's no wonder we battle obesity in this country, with our USDA/FDA making guidelines like that!

These days people avoid wheat gluten for many more reasons than just gluten intolerance.  Links between wheat gluten and many other ailments have been shown.  Here are some pertinent articles.  The last one is written in regard to weight loss, but the two key reasons it gives for avoiding gluten are also directly related to bc:

MBJ, you are taking 15 wobenzyme a day? I have been taking one for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has really helped with my joint aches.  Can you explain what else it helps with? Maybe I will take more.

Annette...I noticed where you mentioned something about a chocolate and chili pepper bar...

Have you tried cutting pickled jalapeno's in half, seeds removed, and filled with crunchy peanut butter?   This was chef Sam Arnold's most special horsdouvre' he served to his friends at his restaurant The Fort  near Morrison Co.

He worked with Coors when they came out with a Cook-Book...and he introduced this tasty little snack at the brewery when the book came out.  It was a HIT!  Not that many people know about this, but everyone that comes here LOVES them!  I also like "Pepper Jelly!"

Sherry....thanks for the suggestions....I think I'll look into which one of my choices act like this isn't some kind of burden to them.....Maybe I should ask my Dentist?....Ha!  I think if I tell my Radiologist, who is the sweetest thing, about how I feel,  that she will take over from here!

That would be perfect!  Maybe she just doesn't want to step on any toes.  THEY referred me to the Oncologist in the first place....Okay, I'l call that office and whine .....I will act for-lorn.  Oh man, that ought to get me NO-where...Ha!

Only I REALLY put lots of peanut butter in them!

For those of you looking for supplements to hopefully increase your white blood counts, my ND had me on Astragalus during certain points of chemo (along with AHCC mushroom caps) and I have the pills on hand now for whenever I"m feeling run down or the beginnings of a cold and I've been great.  You can do tincture (liquid) or pills.  Just something to look into if you're interested. :)
