Sandra, I assumed the same thing about Nora Roberts' books.  Learned a couple of years ago she and JD Robb were one and the same.  Good to know that they aren't bodice rippers.  I'll have to start reading her books now.  First, I need to get through two baskets of books and more are on the way.  Luckily, I can get through two books a week when my eyes aren't bothering me.

Minus, that sounds perfect to me. It's been raining here all day so I'm piled up in the recliner with a blanket, a kitty, a cup of tea, and a book.

I need a "like" button for that sign!!

Will let you know, VR!   Don't see why he had to rant on you because he didn't like it!

Good Glennie - I'll be waiting to hear about the new Lee Child too.  VR - I'd trust your recommendation for almost anything.  Your DH... too much of an unknown to determine, although he & I do seem to read a lot of the same authors.

Gawande was interviewed on pbs or Charles Rose last week about being Mortal. His father was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer while he was writing the book.  He said that people are never asked what is important to them when they are approaching the end and they should be.  I turned and asked my husband what he wanted and he said no pain and to be able to take care of himself - I am not so sure the latter is possible.  Anyway I would like to read it too. If you get it, please post your opinion.

As to Little libraries, the elementary school on our block has a little library where the kids can take a book and give a book.  It is outside the school on a pole with a large wooden box that almost looks like a large bird house.

Been off the 'net due to computer problems so reading a LOT the past fortnight.  Bought, read, and donated to my local library World of Trouble, the third book in Ben Winters' The Last Policeman trilogy.  Excellent and thought-provoking.  (How would you spent your last days knowing there's a killer asteroid bearing down on Earth?)

Snacked on Faye Kellerman's new book Murder 101, my first of her Peter Decker series.  Pretty good read.  An experienced homicide detective retires from LAPD to a small town and of course there's a whodunnit to solve.

Love Lee Child and his sometimes-writing-partner Douglas Preston, whose most recent book is The Kraken Project.  It's a thriller about a computer program built to guide a rocket to Saturn's moon Titan but instead escapes into the internet.  (edit to add, I was rooting for "Dorothy" the strong AI - artificial intelligence not aromatase inhibitor LOL.)

Edge of Eternity, the final book in Ken Follett's Century trilogy is finally out so picked up book #1, Fall of Giants.  I learned my lesson with the Harry Potter series, when I was sick with flu and read books 1-6 in a week then had to wait a year for #7.

LOL @badger!  Try waiting for the Clan of the Cave Bear books. By Jean Auel.  They go about 7 years or longer between books. LOL I think her series is finished now though.  And Peter Decker series is great. I'll have to wait list that one.

    Much love to all.

I like both Faye and Jonathan Kellerman's series.  Waiting to get Faye's latest from library.

It is really hard with the series, isn't it???  it was hard waiting for Harry Potter to come out!  I was glad that The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo was out entirely before I started reading it,,, But had to wait with Ben Winters  (enjoyed that a lot, not sure how I would spend my last days either!)   And now have to wait for book 3 of Marcus Sakey's Brillance Series.  It's really good, here is synopsis if you are interested.

I was still teaching when the Twilight books came out, and read them so I would know what the kids were talking about. I actually thought they were pretty entertaining also (although I did not go to any of the movies!).

I read but did not like Twilight so never read beyond book 1.  Haven't seen the movies either, Ruth.

Glennie, I knew of one adult (me, who pre-ordered on Amazon) and a bunch of teenage girls (who dressed up and stood in line at the bookstore to get a copy @ midnight) waiting eagerly for the final H. Potter book.  Glad to know you were there too. :-)

I did go to Barnes & Noble at midnight for one of the books,, can't remember if it was the last one or not,,,, probably was!!  It was SUCH an excellent series.    I was still living in NYC when it started. Right after book 4(?) I think,,, came out,, my mom came up to visit. We were walking around by Rockefeller Center,,, and walking towards us was a family. They were obviously tourists, and their 10 year old son, was trailing behind them with his nose stuck in the new Harry Potter book.  He couldn't care less about the sites of NYC,, he wanted to read that book!  It was so lovely to see a series getting kids reading again.

Glennie...today...it seems everyone on the streets of Manhattan is reading....their text messages!  It drives me bonkers!  They are oblivious to everything and EVERYONE on the sidewalks!  Oy!  Walking has become dangerous!  Unless you say to the approaching pedestrian, "Excuse me," you should expect to do some wiggling around them!  They don't bother looking up or even attempt to respect the right of way!  Grrrrrr.....

I can't remember which HP book it was, but DS was in about 5th grade & we had my niece & nephew staying with us (probably 6th & 2nd grade). The book came out the night before we were going to take them home (a 6 hour drive). They all dressed up in the glasses, put the scars on their foreheads with makeup & we went to the Barnes & Nobles midnight release. It was awesome to be surrounded by a crowd of kids all so excited about reading! We bought the books & MADE the kids leave them in the car until the next morning. The older two never took their noses out of their books the whole trip. So fun!

Last night we watched a couple in a restaurant who texted throughout their whole meal. They did not exchange one single word.....or perhaps they were texting each other, as apparently no one ever actually talks anymore!!!!

The whole phone thing is soooo out of control!!!  I was at dinner with several people last night, and the 70 year old university professor kept pulling out his phone to confirm facts.  **yes that movie was produced in 1939**   But at least we did spent most of the night talking to each other!

I'm happy to see kids reading books.  I think putting DVD players in new cars was a bad idea,,, yes, it's good for the parents to keep the kids amused,, but also bad cuz the kids cannot come up with ways to amuse themselves!  Like reading, or counting license plates, or cows, or whatever!!

VR:  finished the new Jack Reacher and I enjoyed it.  Lots of action and Reacher's thought process throughout.  Can't imagine why your neighbor didn't like it.  It's basically similiar to his other books, but good action and a good plot, I thought.

Glennie, I just finished the latest Jack Reacher novel and liked it also. Found the woman character a bit too weak. Not as much actionas some, but still showed Reacher's mental prowess.

She was a bit weak,, but she wasn't "army" or "police", so I cut her some slack.  She came around in the end.  I do love reading Reacher's mental thoughts!

I'm glad to hear the Reacher novel was enjoyable! DH thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps my neighbor thought Reacher's thought process might have been more tedious than complex and agile.  That said, he still looks forward to Child's next book....so his complaints must not have been that bad.

Since you all are crazy book ladies like me, I thought I'd share some links to good places to buy books for CHEAP or find books you are looking for.

Abe Books is not only a place to find books, it's also a great place to discuss books and to get help finding the name of a book or the author you might have forgotten. This is its welcome page. http://www.abebooks.com/books/Welcome/?cm_sp=home-_-left-_-welcome

Thrift Books has free shipping and really cheap prices. I especially like it because it has a wish list and will let you know if a book you are looking for becomes available. http://www.thriftbooks.com/

Book Gorilla will send you e-mails with free or cheap books for your Kindle. You can set it up to send you info on only the genre you like. www.bookgorilla.com

Amazon has a service called Kindle Daily Deals and they will also send you good info on free or inexpensive books for your Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_18?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text&field-keywords=kindle+daily+deals&sprefix=Kindle+Daily+Deals%2Caps%2C337

    Moonflower912 - I like your poem.

OMG!  just a week ago, I had no books out from the library and was starting to read the books I actually own, but have never read, then I don't know, I heard about some books? I wondered if any of my favorite authors had new books? whatever, I reserved 3 books, in the meantime I went to a larger branch library than my neighborhood branch and wandered the stacks while DH searched the video collection and I ended up coming home with 4 books, I have now just picked up 2 of the books I had reserved, so I now have 6 library books - at least they are all 4 week books - I put away MY books and am now in immersed in the library books! the pressure is on.
