Arimidex - Coping with the SE's

There shouldn't be gluten in ice cream unless they add fillers, do they? Have you guys tried using Japanese soba noodles (all buckwheat, no flour) instead of regular pasta? I also don't like the brown rice substitute.

AH HA, A new thing to try. Japanese Soba - will pick up some this week. I get lots of my rice noodles at the International Store - will look for those. Boy, brown rice pasta is not a good "substitute" for the 'real' stuff ;-) very, ah, well, let's say "chewy" is about as nice as I can get.
GabbyCal, Ah, the effects of no estrogen on memory, esp. after chemotherapy. First, about the time I found my car/house keys in a ice cube tray in the freezer. Finally gave up looking for them, forgot where I wanted to drive to anyhow, and luckily it was a hot day and I decided to make iced tea. Then, the little pill holders with the days marked with letters. GREAT - unless you confuse Tuesday with Thursday, and then wonder if you DID confuse them, or what day it really is, was? And so look at the calendar, and how does THAT help? If you don't know what day of the week it is, like trying to use a dictionary to find a word you can't begin to spell correctly....
Are we having fun yet? YES ...it all is worth it, to keep the Beast away!!!! Off to find those noodles...

My favorite way to eat soba in the summer is the Japanese way: served cold with a dipping sauce of tamari, a little wasabi and lots of chopped green onions.

The noodles I have been using are a combination of corn flour and quinoa flour. I can't tell the difference with how they taste from normal noodles. They are called ancient quinoa harvest pasta. I can only get them at my local Publix here in Florida.

Some ice creams are gluten-free, some aren't, have to check the label; also notice if they're sweetened with high fructose corn syrup - a big NO NO. Try sorbets -- but check the label.

I haven't had the problem of forgetting my thought mid-sentence but have ongoing problems with vocabulary. I used to be able to come up with a synonym for any word and now have problems with that, when I can even remember the word I wanted a synonym for!!! Really frustrating and the one se that has not diminished in the 2+ years I've been on Arimidex/alternative (see, I didn't want 'alternative' but what's the word for, oh, yeah, 'generic' - I rest my case!).
edited to add - I didn't have chemo.

Can't blame mine on chemo either, only had 1 treatment. Ithink mine might be as we say getting older as well.

Patoo and Kira.....I got called "Tippie" by my mother more than once when she was in her 40s. Tippie was our dog!
I seem to tolerate gluten just fine, and fortunately have relatively few symptoms from AIs. My problem with pasta is that I think about 4 servings is about the right amount.
What I am suffering from today is called "bicycle wipeout". I am fine, but am scraped and bruised. So training is postponed a few days.
I wouldn't worry about word retrieval. Happens to all of us, both genders.

Nope, it's the AI, not my age !!!! Absolutely has nothing to do with aging.

Kira, I'm gonna get to Publix for some of those quinoa noodles! I haven't seen them before, but I haven't looked either. I'm up for the change. Pasta is the one thing that is keeping me from being nearly gluten free.
As for the brain-freeze, I think it is symptomatic of the loss of estrogen as well. This would normally happen later in life, but with chemopause or oophs that we've had, plus the AI, there is definitely some cognitive impairment. I'm fine when I have time to think about things and write them down, but the short term memory and recall is not like it was. Patoo, I also have some vocab problems and feel like a dummy sometimes when I can't come up with the right word.
Claire, sorry about your accident, hope you are ok.
I'm pretty sure the DQ icecream cake we just ate for Father's Day was not gluten free, but boy was it delicious!

You will find them with the oganic things. At least in my store it's not in with the regular noodle products.

I think it is all the 'spell check' and things like that too...sometimes my mind is just blank when I want to spell a word....maybe my brain is just too full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
edited for spelling

Hi ladies,
Cognitive impairment should often result as SE from chemo and AI too. I never had these troubles before starting CA healings. 20 months after surgery and 15 months after finishing chemo, being on AI - my short memory is gone-
Best wishes
Usha

JO-5
we were talking about brown rice GLUTEN FREE pasta - to avoid all wheat. Tho' learning it seems we can have buckwheat...and no mater HOW you cook it - well, I won't use the words here ;-)))))))

JO-5 I agree the brown rice noodles taste bad. That's why I tried the ancient quinoa harvest pasta. I was surprised how good they are, but then that's just my opinion. Of course right now I'm trying to lose weight before my sons wedding, so really trying to avoid all carbs except vegetables. I'm getting so tired of them though.

I'm going to try the Japanese soba noodles, and look for the Ancient Qinoa Harvest - I really MISS pasta, but JO-5, I agree with you - I couldn't stand the brown rice ones.
Only thing I've every thrown away, ah, except for the NonFat Cream cheese I once tried. Was gonna use it as glue, but afraid it wold mildew. Out it went!

I use the soba noodles in many dishes, but not sure they would work with spaghetti, which is what I was really missing. I agree they got tossed by me as well. I also didn't like something called Kasha. Does anyone have any idea how to make it edible so I don't toss it as well?

I agree it just tastes gross to me. Sorry I'm sure there must be someone who likes the stuff.

Oooooohhh...this looks very promising: http://www.quinoa.net/145/163.html
Kira - don't give up yet http://www.aboutkasha.com/
I'm excited to learn there is something other than brown rice, quinoa that has no gluten!!!!
MORE news: Just spoke to Jennifer (310 217-8125) at the CA Quinoa company that's beenmaking all these wonderful ( corn, quinoa) pasta, spagettis, INCLUDING the large bag sold at many Costco.s AND, if you go to their website - you'll find you can buy WHOLESALE ( that's 12 boxes) and save 50%. Their products are sold at Whole Foods too. ( We call it Whole Paycheck, but they do have good stuff.)

What I bought was white in color, and tasted like normal noodles. It just says rice and quinoa noodles. It was also organic, and found in the organic isle.

some of their products have rice in them, some corn, HUGE selection on their website.

Can I just say again that I'm feeling great? I've just done some more research on Effexor, which I was given recently to relieve my hot flashes. Now I really have to say that I think it has also relieved most of the symptoms I was attributing to Arimidex, the morning stiffness, achy legs and feet, lower back, etc. I just read on WebMD that it is often given off label for fibromyalgia (symptoms are similar to what I was feeling). I thought it might be the extra exercise I've been doing, but the more I read, the more I think it is the Effexor. I feel so much better. My hot flashes are also down about 80%. Just had to share.

shelleyj43: Woohoo! Glad you're feeling better. I've had a few minor SEs, nothing major so far, but I'm only 2 months in...0

10 days, doing fine. Although I am trying the "Claire Plan" where you work out so much that you don't know if you are stiff and sore from the drug or the work out!

Good for all your exercisers!! Glad you are feeling great, Shelley! Often it is a combination of things that helps turn the corner.....what we do, plus time.

Cold soba noodles with a chunky, fresh tomato sauce, serve cold is yummy on a hot summer day. I don't use soba in rich sauces either.

TokyoSing, Your cold salad sounds yummy. I will have to experiment using them in cold salads. I just love them on a hot summer days.

OK, I'm admitting total ignorance, but a willingness to try something new. What are soba noodles? I loved the websites on Quinoa and kashi. I've got Quinoa on my shopping list for my next trip.

Shelley so GOOD GOOOD GOOOOOOOD to hear your good news.
Revkat - I'm almost tempted to visit Claire's thread - I know it helps to walk, and I always find something else to do - weed my little garden patch? Snip lettuce and eat it, watch my sugar snap peas grow ( well, not really, but fascinating to watch those little tendrils they put out to grap the support!)
Native mainer - just be VERY VERY sure to rinse the Quinoa ("keen - waa") before you cook it. It has a very bitter taste if you don't - something that can't hurt us, but tastes yucky. They cook very quickly, less than 15 minutes - and I love qunoa plain, with some olive oil. So easy. Love them. Hope you will too!
