I disagree about the bedskirt!! My sheets, though marked as "deep pocket" always pop off the corners!!! If your Mom has a normal mattress, maybe it would work, but if she has any kind of a comfortable mattress, it would just pop off. It would drive me nuts! Premade bedskirts are cheaper than you could EVER make them. I've never made a bedskirt for that reason. Uses way too much fabric!!! Velcro would work better than buttons, I agree on that one and like the comment that says to use short pieces. I, too, was thinking the edge would be VERY stiff otherwise. I just bought velcro in the dollar store that was better than any I've ever bought before! Go figure....

Hmm, just had a thought. Do you mean to put a fitted sheet on the boxspring and attach the skirt? Was that the logic? I assumed you mean put it on the fitted sheet on the mattress. Maybe putting it on the boxspring would work.

AHA!! I went back and read the orginal post (couldn't do that while posting as it was a page back) and see that it was the boxspring noted. I still think it's cheaper to buy..... But at least if you're doing the boxspring height you could cut commercial fabric (44" wide) into half and then use that! Surely 22" would reach the floor...

I figured it was on the boxspring.  That is what I have done.  When making one to match a quilt, I would think it would look so much more put together to chooses a fabric from the quilt than to have a solid colored store bought one.

My question is why would you make a duvet cover to match a quilt?  Is she not going to use the quilt?  Or will she be foldng the quilt at the foot of the bed?

As for the size of the bed, you could go by standard bed measurements, but I would recommend getting the actual measurements, if you make it even 1/2" off, it will be a bear to make it look even.  If you put it on the boxspring, what do you girls think about using the spiral upholstery pins to secure the  sheet to the boxspring so it doesn't "squirm" when the sheets are changed?

Wouldn't that tear the more delicate sheet fabric? Upholstery fabric is so much thicker!! I'm doing a twin quilt right now and the books say it should be approx 63" x 90" and as my squares are 8" I'll do (8x11) 64" x 88". I, too, wondered about the matching thing....

I've finished 2 complete rows, so thats 16 squares. Geez!!! That means I have 72 more to go???? Are you kidding me??? Now I know why I don't "do" regular quilts!!! Booooring!!!!! I'm doing Turkey Tracks in brights with a black background. VERY stunning looking! I think one of the grands will LOVE it!!

    You are probably right, Barb.

I saw a neat quilt once in a quilt store. It had squares of bright fish-themed fabric surrounded by black. The effect was a group of aquariums. I've filed it in my head under 'maybe some day'.

You gals are quite helpful with this bed skirt thing. The whole story is that the quilt mom will use in her new "studio" assisted living place isn't really a twin size quilt, i believe it is smaller so I'm not sure how much of the bed will be covered. Additionally she sleeps under just the duvet with no top sheet and doesn't tuck it in. It, I believe, is bigger than the quilt. So....the duvet cover is a coordinate solid color for the quilt, and I thought it would be good to cover the box spring and ugly metal legs on the twin frame she bought with the same fabric. It's actually sheet fabric, and she has the pillow cases etc. She's accustomed to sleeping in a beautiful sleigh bed, but it just won't fit in her new room. ..so.......hmmmmm.... What I have available is two double bed fitted sheets, and the already made twin duvet cover. I believe she will use the facilities' white fitted sheet which they will launder weekly.

Oh...they, of course, no longer make this color sheet, so I don't have a twin size fitted sheet to put over the twin box spring.....hence it seemed to me I should make a skirt from the double sheet I have.

Is all this as clear as mud now? It would be helpful if I had both the bed and the quilt, but, alas, I don't so I'm fighting sort of blind here. It's probably all overkill anyway, but I just keep seeing Mom trying to live in one room and having to look at the box spring and metal legs of a bed which feels sort of "dorm roomish" to me.

Barb....yep, you've got many squares left to do.....but think how beautiful it will be. I love quilts set in a black background. I've done 2 of them and have a 3rd in progress......

It's wonderful for your mom to have such a thoughtful, caring daughter who has a high regard for her comfort and aesthetics. That kind of sewing is more "work" rather than "fun."

I don't know why, I was thinking the duvet cover was to match the quilt, not coordinate with it.  Sounds like you have things under control.  As for not making the sheet color anymore, have you tried online, even ebay?

Well, if you just lay the double sheet over the twin boxspring evenly and then `trim`it all  around like a long hair cut and then go home and hem it up, it would be perfect! Wouldn`t it???? Fuller at the corners, but you could dart that extra fabric in to make a box skirt.

I get a news letter with sewing ideas and this came the other week. a tutorial on making a ruffled bed skirt out of flat sheets. It was done for a king size bed but it would probably work for a twin using the same principle.

Sheila.....thanks for thinking of me and my project! this is the technique I was going to use, so it's nice to see it in action. I'm still going to do it from just the bottom springs so she can wash her "sleeping on" sheet.

    Elisimo,

Great quilt. I love the colors and all the different blocks. Was this a sampler quilt?

Yes, it was a sampler.  I was still learning or rather remembering how to do some of the different blocks.  I had been away from quilting for a long time and now it is about the only creative outlet I have that I can do when I am not up to shopping.Laughing

edited to add: the original pattern was done all in pink and I refuse to do an all pink quilt! Even for my granddaughters!!!!

MostlySew, if you're searching eBay for those discontinued sheets, try entering the words  duvet zipper sew  as your search words to find zippers up to 72" long.

Stratford....thanks. I had done a search, but the zippers I found were outdoor separating weight. I like your search words better...

Elisimo, I love the colors you used in the quilt. Yellow, blue and green play well together. My guild was talking last week about possibly doing a block of the month this year that can be put together as a sampler quilt.

    Welcome, Stratford.

Elisimo, the quilt is lovely.  I would like to do a sample quilt just because I'd like to try different blocks, even if I wouldn't make a whole quilt from each one.

I have a full sized bedskirt on a trundle bed in the guest room.  It looks sloppy, but it matches the paint in there and I haven't made it a priority to change it.  Although I will not be able to make a gathered skirt, I think I will consider finally making that skirt a twin "box" skirt.  Thanks for the inspiration, Sheila.

Mostly Sew, They now make an iron on velcro. It comes in short pieces, but would work on a duvet.

OK, I admit how lazy I am. I was looking for something to cover the guest bed to keep cat hair off and discovered a king size sheet makes a great bedspread. Someday I hope to replace the dust ruffle on our bed that goes with the quilt we haven't used in ages. I would just cover the box spring if it weren't for all the things stored under the bed that need to be hidden. We are really short of closet space.

I once used a heavy duty velcro on a show curtain that was pulled down before a play started. It was canvas and very heavy. A heavy duty velcro would be massive overkill on a duvet. I think even light weight velcro would work on a duvet made from a sheet. I agree with the shorter pieces.

If your mom really wants zippers couldn't you use two dress zippers starting at opposite sides and meeting in the middle? The tab are so small on those that I think they could work. The sport zippers are pretty heavy.

I am going to a three day serger class this next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It is 75 miles from my house so I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express for two nights. I waffled about the cost but decided that I will enjoy the class more if I haven't just battled traffic for an hour and a half before hand. The hotel serves breakfast so that should be nice.

I  am really trying to get going again. I think this will do it. My DD has decided she wants my serger that has a cover stitch on it. Now I will have a good excuse to get a new one that threads easily.  I used to be so quick at threading a serger that I thought I could probably do it blind folded but now I don't recall a thing. It has been ten years since I have touched my old one.  I think this will be helpful with making toddler clothing and some slip cover making.  When I did costuming my serger was really my friend when I had to do something in production mode like 30 pair of Pirate Pants!

Mainly I just need to get activated and moving about.  I am so stiff and achy it isn't funny.

When I finally got a room of my own when I was about 11, my mother and my sister took it upon themselves to decorate my bedroom.  My sister's room was nice yellows, green, and white.  Mine was done in red white and bright pink.  I coped with it mainly because it was the first "not hand-me-down" stuff in my life.  Needless to say there are no pink rooms in this house.

Boy Wasn't it!  The carpet was pink red and white blotches, and the wallpaper was pink with a Redwork embroidery pattern on it.  Alll painted surfaces were pink and my curtains were white.  I can say that I have a bit more style than that, and now my mother trusts me to decorate her home.  My sister, goes for white walls and "stuff" hung on them. My home is very warm colored.

LOVE the sampler quilt!!! Very pretty....

Sheila, that was a cool website, but did she put the ruffles on the top sheet??? I like how it looks by covering the join of the two mattresses, but again, wouldn't it pull up all the time?
