Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

LOL, Becky! Perhaps we should all be squared off with our favorite doc in denial for ringside matches! I am with you on self competition, which is why I believe doing whatever you can for the day is key. I know I will get back to where I want to be, or wherever my body lets me take it. I love being inspired by others, but comparing would not put me in a happy place. When I was at my fittest years ago, I had several close friends (a sister and her two brothers) and they were amazing. Their level of strength and endurance really was Olympic level. I had so much fun doing things with them, but I couldn't compare my ability to theirs or I would neglect to remind myself of all the cool things I had accomplished. They sure did push me to my limits though, which I was grateful for, but at times it was downright frustrating!! Anyway, every time I do something faster, longer, or stronger than I have done in the past, I always like to pat myself on the back. It keeps me going.
Carol, I am amazed by how you manage to walk everywhere you happen to be!! I think your downplaying of your 7.8 miles the other day made me goofy!! It may not be your average (which I think was your point), but it is pretty darn spectacular!! I feel sort of misunderstood here - I just wanted to cheer for you!

Aww, Tina, I understood your message just fine! This thread is simply THE BEST for a source of upbeat and sincere motivation.
When I stumbled into our town's little gym about 14 months ago, asking the owner/trainer if he could work miracles to get me ready for the marathon bmx/diep surgery, I could not walk a mile, let alone 8, and more than one flight of stairs would have had me in recovery mode for hours. I've had wonderful encouragement from so many places since then, and looking back, it's amazing what we can do when motivated. Even taking off a good chunk of time post-surgery to recover, I'm stronger than I ever would have thought possible, especially at this point in my gray-headed years! I was initially motivated out of fear of not being strong for surgery and for ease of recovery, and then after the surgery, I was motivated by fear of totally losing all the fitness I'd accomplished getting ready for it.
Now the motivation is no longer fear, and oddly, I find it more difficult to stay focused on the goal of staying fit. That's why this particular forum is so incredibly helpful: We all share the knowledge that staying active helps with this crazy LE, and we all live with the potholes that LE puts in our road to fitness. So there's never any judgment--we all understand that there will be reasons, not excuses, for taking it easy for a time--and we all truly celebrate when any of us puts LE in its proper place by achieving in the LE care and in the activity departments of our lives.
Now back to work. If only I could walk and work out as much as I type at my dang keyboard!

Hey all. I am going to try a 20-30 slow walk today. If feel like such a slug when I am not moving. I guess I am really starting to appreciate what exercise does to me.
All you movers and shakers get the runners on! Yah do what you can!

I do need to remind myself that last year was rugged with chemo and then radiation this year. While I an feeling good my body went through an awful lot. I have a window of time (before the next surgery) to re-coup energy and increase endurance.
This group has been wonderful for getting motivated to make a personal difference. I like Becky's comment that we compete with ourselves. That's a good reminder and motivater - I just need on more step than I did yesterday to better than my best (sort of).

'Just one more step' is a marvelous way to look at lots of life's challenges.

Had a goal of 4000 steps today. Made 5179! Grocery shopping helped. I walked down every aisle whether I needed to or not. Wonder if I can beat that tomorrow....

Ohio, sending brownies your way, with fudgy icing on top!!!!! Way to go!!!

Alright, Ohio!! Please pass the brownies!
I don't have any exercise to report today other than stretching. I think my foot is feeling a little better, but I am still taking ibuprofen and some natural supplements to help with healing and inflammation. Really ready to turn the corner soon, but I think I need to do some other form of exercise until it is fully resolved. Just regular walking around makes it impossible to completely rest it. I have a Pilates type routine I am going to do that also includes stretching. I have that scheduled for tomorrow and will let you know how I do. Wore night vest last night (the norm), and today I wore my tank (also the norm) and sleeve and glove all day. MLD shortly.0 -
My exercise today was scrubbing spider poo off of vinyl siding. It's more of a workout than I imagined!

Carol! That is hysterical... Must have been a lot of spiders!
Tina - I am sorry your foot is hurting! That is not fun! I am sending prayers and positive energy for healing.
Tina and Becky... You two give me waaayyyyy to much credit! And it is right to compete with yourself! It makes it so much better! When I came off of treatment, I was SO tired all the time. I would lay down everyday with my daughter and take a nap. My hubby and I went on a five mile hike that next summer and I didn't know if I would make it back... Okay, granted it was 98 degrees out... But still! This is something that would have been so easy prior to treatment! For me, it has been one step at a time. One goal at a time. My biggest goal was to ride the Seattle to Portland ride in 09. I bought a bike that Sept. and didn't really start training until April (it kind of rains a lot around here). The ride was in July. Prior to ride day, the longest ride I had done was 36 miles. STP is 204 miles -- which the majority of the riders do in two days. But my goal was to do it in one. And I did. It took me over 12 hours of ride time, over 14 hours when you included stops. It was a huge accomplishment (and one I don't know that I ever care to complete again! 100 miles is plenty... Heck, somedays, 10 is plenty!) and I couldn't have done it without Lance.... Lol. Armstrong. He was my inspiration. Everytime I got tired I thought, "if Lance can come back from cancer and win the Tour 7 times, then I can finish a measly 200 miles today". And I thought this a lot, since I was tired a lot - and had a lot of solitary ride time. Anyway, my point is - I am glad to pass on the inspiration that I got from Lance and from my brother and husband who cylce too. I have a triathlon tomorrow. I know I am not going to win. I know I probably won't even be in the top half of my age group. But the only one I am trying to best is me. Finishing is always good. Beating last year's time will make it better! You girls can achieve anything. So you go for it. And know that I am always here cheering you on! Picture me with a big pair of blue and white pom poms and a megaphone!0 -
Nordy, you have really come a long way. Congratulations and I know that your Triathlon will be just so exciting to hear about. Let us know how you did. I wish...no flat tires on your ride.
GO NORDY, GO NORDY, GO, GO GO!0 -
Carol, I know scrubbing spider doo and fly poo is incredibly hard to get off! If you first take a big diaphram LE breath then spit on it then use a paint scraper that earns extra points at the LE Oylmphic's. Or if you ignore it you lose points because next time there is just more to scrap and it is harder to get off.
Walked for a few minutes today. Didn't even burn a quarter of a calorie. I got to get creative here, maybe I need to smarten up and start doing my Lebed dvd daily. Yah, I kinda miss my date with James on that DVD and I think my hip can do some of the exercises, for sure the opening and arms.
Ok, I'll start.

Trying to keep up with two 3 yr olds is my cardio right now. We are off to a museum.
We have a local cancer walk every November for the center that is sponsoring our support group. It is a big deal. Anyway this year we are going to have a LE group with all of our compression garments on to bring more awareness. TShirts and everything. It is only a 5K but I am determined to be able to jog the whole way. That is my motivation right now.
Have a good movement weekend everyone!

Nordy, best wishes for your triathlon, and HAVE FUN while you do it! Do you wear a triathlete's full-body compression suit?
Hugz, you will find a way to add activity, I'm sure. Just one step at at time, as we say.
Becky, have fun with your 3-year-old cardio routine.
I have more siding to scrub today. We live completely in the woods. Spiders and other bugs think they own the place. I think they really do!

Carol - no I don't wear any compression except my sleeve! I only do sprint disance, so much less pooling of fluids than ifI was doing something longer.
So, I posted this on another thread and copied and pasted it... The bottom line is I am just too lazy to retype everything... So if you see a post by me that looks redundant, it probably is. Is that considered plagiarizing myself?
Weehaaaa! I did my tri this AM. It was COLD. Air temp was 49 degrees at start time and water temp in the mid 60s, I think. Anyway, this is the first time I have gotten out of the water and had my leg cramp up, so I would say the cold definitely made a difference. As for my time - I improved overall by a minute and twelve seconds. My swim and run times were both improved from last year, but my bike time - which is my best event - was actually a minute slower! And I am NOT happy about that! But overall, I cannot complain. As always, it was fun! But I think I need a swim coach. I really stink at swimming.... And I realized today that I hate swimming in a wetsuit. I don't care what they say about it making you slippery... I feel like an aircraft carrier when I want to feel like a submarine!0 -
Nordy - congratulations! You beat your own record. Nice.

Nordy, you do us all proud! Congratulations on a very successful day!

Nordy, all I can say is: WHAT a WOMAN!
Today I kept moving, no specific cardio exercise but still worked in 9889 steps. I leave tomorrow for a quick back-and-forth to the west coast for work, and I wanted to do a lot of work beforehand, preparing for company next weekend and then, in two weeks, a family reunion. There will be about 20 of us. Picture sleeping bags and airbeds. And it means I have to clean out all the spare rooms that seem to just gather clutter, so I have places to tuck those airbeds. Of course, this is all work I should have done over months, but no...waited until it's an undeniable assignment. Lots of up and down stairs, and tons of just moving' my butt. Also worked on more spider-poo removal, and scrubbed some steps that were covered with insect leave-behinds outside. Tried my best to be a one-armed scrubber, but sometimes I just needed to use that LE hand/arm, and I wore the sleeve just for that reason.
I'll get my rest tomorrow when I travel. Hopefully there will still be an opportunity for airport walking, my fave...

My goal was to make 4000 steps Fri/Sat/Sun and I beat that everyday with over 6000 steps yesterday. I'm calling that good.
0 -
Ohio, I'm calling that GREAT! I thought I'd check the bco posts one more time before heading to bed, and I'm glad I did, because reading your report sure sends me to bed with a smile! Good for you!
It's MLD time for moi now, and then some zzz's...hope everyone has a very moving Monday!

Good job on all of your activities ladies!
Carol- I do no envy your organizing, poo scrubbing, one bit!0 -
It's back to work Monday and I'm upping my daily goal to 5000 steps. I work from home, the distance from the office to anywhere in house is not that great so I need to get creative today. The treadmill is in the next room about 15 steps away, maybe I take a few walks throughout the day. Maybe a detour down/up the stairs on every trip across the house would be good.
It felt good logging those steps over the weekend and I think I can up my game. LE flared after heat of last two days, had to wrap last night, so guess indoor activity is the way for me.

Everyone's doing great!! Go Nordy and Ohio!
I'm popping in and reading but not much time to post. Preparing for return trip to FL. Taking train again but this time going solo. Working on stuff related to mom now and also setting up appts for when I am in FL.
Foot is definitely on the upswing, and today is last official day of "taking a load off". Plan to start walking again tomorrow but going easy and seeing how it feels. Have learned my lesson and will always wear sneakers for walking or jogging outside or inside!
Swelling is doing fairly well considering I haven't had an appt for MLD yet and I haven't been walking. Have appt this Friday but hoping therapist can squeeze me in Tues or Thurs since I have to cancel appt for following week. Have appts lined up for week I return home.

Well all you girls are doing my exercise portion very well. Dang proud of you all. I see you are all butt kicking LE right where it hurts...good for you.
TonightI am going to venture out on the boardwalk and see how I do. Should be a fab sunset to boot and yes I will stay away for the ice cream stand!
Nordy, You inspire us all. I'm so happy to hear about your success!

Hugz, YOU are an inspiration! Thanks for all the cheering you do,
Binney0 -
Did it -5324 steps today. I have met my goal more days (in a row) than ever before. Finished the day on the treadmill, knees are complaining but I feel good. The knees have all night to recuperate. Now to do some MLD and then a good night's rest for a satisfying day.
0 -
Hugz, we hear your cheers all the way from that boardwalk!
Ohio...Super! What a successful day! I hope your knees forgive you.
Today was a two-airport day, with enough time beteen them to log about 5200 steps. Then I had some time in downtown L.A. to put the total over 11,500. Too bad I am in a concrete jungle, when I know that beautiful pacific beaches are not far away!
Too pooped to do MLD, but considering my long flights, I will do it anyway.

I am back after a great weekend with two 3 yr olds. I did get a lot of walking in in a children's museum, an outdoor park and at a lake with ducks. I did some light jogging for a few minutes but no real out and out aerobic. So back at it this afternoon. My goddaughter kept showing me her dance recital moves and I tried to imitate them. Just do what the little ones do and you get a lot of movement!

Today I squeezed in 10,249 steps, mostly walking city blocks after teaching today's seminar. Not speedy, though, as I was not dressed to work up a sweat. I did climb a few aggressive hills, however. An OK day and enough to make me feel I could eat a decent dinner!
