carol57, so glad the tumble wasn't worse. I cringed when you said you landed on your hand expecting to hear you copied me and broke your wrist. Hope you are not too sore tomorrow.

Isn't it amazing how fast the ground can't dump you?  Glad you didn't break yourself.

Have you looked imnto your local YMCAs LIVESTRONG program?

Mine has a   program open to all cancer survivors  for free 6 weeks membership with trainer.  Once I began to realize I had LE, I didnt go,.

Now if they told me someone there was specifically trained in LE, I'd be there in a  heartbeat!

They might be worth adding to your networking.

Try to google the program.  I am guessing it is not just in my state.

    Good Luck to you!

Oh Carol---Bummer!  I hope not too bad today.

Ohio--Glad to have you back.  I like your avatar.  Sisters are great!  Yes, just a tiny bit more than the day before.  One day at a time.

I have to work today and have decided except for MLD and MLD exercises to take a day off.  I am tired.  Have had some issues with my mother and it has taken up a lot of my time.

    Will step it up tomorrow.

Purple, yes I did look into Livestrong at my local YMCA

I joined up, it is a FREE membership for 12 weeks and some of the folks just reup and keep going!  However, I have been an 8 year member at my gym and my rates are pretty lo~~ and since I have many pals there, I am staying with my old gym.  I could actually go to both places if I wanted to.  The Livestrong is geared to folks who have not been working out and is designed to get you out of the chair and moving.  So for me it was not suitable.  The Y is cheap but you end up paying for many classes and the pool is filled with kids.  My gym has no fees for classes and no kids in the pool!

It definitly is a worthwhile program and I would advise anyone who does not have a gym membership, to look into it.  I went thinking they might know something about lymphe but not at this gym.

You are right on the networking though, thanks for the thought.  I am reallizing that if I wanted to become a lymphe massage person, I would need to likely go to a 2 year college for OT first and then the LANA training if I wanted to be able to accept insurance.  More things to think about~~

Just keep in mind that the LiveStrong program has very little focus on LE or those at risk of LE.  The trainers who give the program are required to watch a short web seminar about the PAL protocol, but there's no really emphasis on it.  When I brought the PALS for Life workshop here and invited area gyms to send trainers, one of the area YMCAs sent their program director.  She went home at the end of the day realizing that she needed to revise their programs for cancer survivors, because they were definitely not LE-friendly.

I am definitely sore this morning!  Ankle hurts and is weak, and the side I landed on has an achey arm.  But--it's not an LE ache like I live with on the other side, so..this too shall pass.  Unlike LE which of course, does not simply go away.

A note on LiveStrong - I do both LiveStrong and Gold's Gym. They totally geared it for my exercise level. I will have been working out with a LiveStrong for two years in January. I'm averaging a new trainer about every three semesters. There have been a couple that I didn't like (they did not listen to me nor they really understand LE so I asked for a new one and got one). I think finding a good LiveStrong program that understands and works with LE is like finding an affordable, certified, knowledgeable LE therapist. I would not be where I am today if it weren't for the LiveStrong program. I've had to educate myself, stand up for myself...but isn't that the case with most LE related things?

I have free access to a pool at the local university. Being able to get in that pool this summer was a lifesaver in the midst of that flare...there is no Y in my community and indoor pools are rare...LiveStrong has been HUGE in my recovery. I can't get in to see a therapist right now...but I do have this program...

It is run by a professor of Kinesiology and I sat and talked with him in depth before I started about LE. He does get it. When I break in a new trainer into the LE world it takes a bit...but I hope I'm mentoring some therapists who will 'get it' when they start their careers in either OT or PT. LiveStrong has been a huge benefit to me...and still is one and a half years later...

Just to clarify: Dr. Philip Anton is the professor who runs it locally. The trainers I work with are students...some are grad students...some not. The trainer I have now is an undergrad but we work well together and he listens to me.

Oh, Carol, hope you're feeling better soon.  Take care of yourself, glad it wasn't worse.

I am lucky, I live just outside Phila., so have many different gyms and Y's to choose from.  I joined Planet Fitness in April and have successfully made it a habit.  At $10 a month, I can't come close any where else.  The only drawback is there is no pool.  The Y here is $61 per month (and if you want to take any of their classes, it is extra) and $99 joining fee, so an extra $51 is a lot to spend per month just because it has a pool.  I will have to wait until summer to swim when the outdoor swim clubs open.

Tina, are you the person doing the PAL program at Penn?  I finally got back to it yesterday.  Have to get that to be a habit too.  I don't want to go back to the next follow up not having followed the program again.  The last time, it couldn't be helped, but this time I have to get my act together.  Those exercises was all I did yesterday, but I was busy shopping and walking the dogs and working around the house.  I have to get a pedometer and see what I am doing.  I am sure the weekends aren't so bad, but weekdays when I'm on my butt at work all day, I need to get some serious extra walking in.

    Have a good Monday everyone!

Carol - yikes!  I've almost been tripped up by those roll-y acorns and other assorted nuts, so I can absolutely see how it could happen.

Over the weekend, I did my MLD and a 2.6 mile mountain hike, but no Lebeds.  We were at our little cabin in the woods which has no internet, so I think that without all of you to hold me accountable, I skipped the Lebeds.  Bad me!  We were back home in time for the Nationals-Cardinals playoff game yesterday - did a LOT of dusting, cleaning and general pacing out of sheer nervousness as it was a very close game.  If the Nats keep playing games like this, I'm going to be a nervous wreck by the end of it all.  But I'm going to have a very clean house!

Back on track this morning.  MLD, 2 mile run, and :::::drum roll please:::::: the Lebeds! Cool

I was lucky after my treatment, dumb lucky really, the trainer I signed with was in grad school for public health and listened to me!  He might not have understood LE before, but he sure learned something from me

course he left for a better job but his parents still come to the gym and his dad told me they are doing the BC walk this month, good for them

Dawne-Hope, that was a great post that carries the simple reminder that we must be our own LE advocates. LiveStrong is a good program and I did not mean to suggest otherwise, just to say --which you said better than I did --that we need to be mindful of our LE needs and find ways to educate those trainers to respect them.  Same is true for yoga, which has come up in other LE threads.  Dawne, I like your observation that finding a trainer conversant in our LE needs is about the same as finding a truly qualified LE therapist.  We just cannot take for granted that they have the knowledge and experience we would hope for.

Today I would love, love, love to take a long, hot soaking bath to help put an end to the soreness I'm feeling after my lovely klutz fall.  But no...LE says no hot bath!   Bad LE, bad! Bad!

    Carol

Jo - I absolutely tend to do the Lebeds too fast if I'm not watching the video.  I keep an eye on the time and if I finish faster than 15 minutes then I know I need to slow down.  I also try to make a point of watching it once and a while to get my timing back.  But I've seen the video so much that it drives me crazy, especially that one woman with the short hair in the second row who keeps yapping ("Dancing!!"), so I try to minimize how much I have to watch it.  Tongue out

After my vacation in RI, I was pretty tired and needed to rest. As of this week, I am on the final-final-final leg of legal paperwork stuff for my mother. Whole project will definitely will be done by early next week as far as conference calls, decisions, and signing documents. I feel like I have made these same kinds of reports over and over, but this is THE big final hurdle and then I just need to put things in place as per decisions. I cannot wait to put this issue to bed!

Yes, LoveToCook, I am enrolled in the Penn PAL study, but classes are finished and I am now doing the long-term reporting of my exercise. In spite of events over past two weeks, I have been consistent with the PAL program. I am feeling good about that and getting a grasp of organizing time to regularly include. My walking has suffered, as the friend I visited was recovering from surgery and we only did short stints on the beach and in park around corner from his house. I need to get back on track, but I am not beating myself up about that. My time spent with friend was more important. LTC, just adding the weight program to the walking I was doing almost doubles the time I have to commit to exercise. Incorporating all that with working is a challenge. My husband wears a pedometer to work, which has the effect of increasing his awareness of movement during day and motivating him to take stairs, use breaks to get in steps. A desk job can be difficult when it comes to getting in steps, and he really dislikes being sedentary.

Becky, I hope whatever you are coping with re your mom is resolved soon. I know how tiring it can be, so it's good to listen to your body and take care of you. Being a caretaker isn't easy.

Carol, those kinds of falls are frustrating, and hopefully your ankle and other sore areas are feeling better soon!

Dawne, such terrific news! Glad your uncle could join you and make the event extra special.

I play my Lebed DVD on a laptop computer, and I always put it on mute, so I  can follow along as I'm watching news or something interesting on tv. I'm usually toward the end of my day and tired, so I like to do it mindlessly--not even try to remember what comes next.

Jo-Yes I go too fast if I do not put the Lebed video on.  I am getting better at going slower and making sure I did 15 minutes of it if I do not have the video on.

Cold here compared to last week.  In the 40s this am.  Only got to a rainy 51 yesterday.  I am off to the dam.  I love this weather.

    Carol--Hope your ankle heals quickly.

Carol~falling terrifies me because it seems every time I go down it's on my LE side.  And with no breast on that side one would think I'd fall the other way, towards the heavier side. :P  I'm glad you're ok.

Marple, there must be some poetic justice that my LE arm now has a sister-in-ache on the other side, because falling on my non-LE side I bruised that arm and it's quite sore.  But yes, imagine if I had landed on the LE side.  Our friends with bilateral LE have quite the risk dealing with life's daily bumps and grinds, don't they? Double jeopardy for falls, burns, cuts...not easy.

I told Kira when I saw her on my trip to RI, but I don't think I mentioned to you guys. I discovered the lanolin in the Eucerin was giving me the rash. Duh, I know I used to get bumps from lanolin and avoided lotions, shampoos, etc with it. However, since I was told by my LE therapist to use when I wrap, I never thought to look at ingredients, as it has the right pH, yada, yada. Anyway, the rash appeared on my legs for a while before appearing on my arm, so I didn't connect it. Also, the dermatologist gave me (you got it!) lots of Eucerin samples and told me to moisturize more. I do not know why the shower seemed to intensify or cause further outbreaks, but since I have discontinued Eucerin for over a month I have not had an outbreak. And my other thought that it might be stress related can be dismissed, as I had a pretty stressful past two weeks with no rash. I'm back to using Lymphoderm and Nivea, and I am going to try the Vanicream. Just a little reminder to myself that I always need to be using my noggin!

Reporting in with basic LE compliance today, garments, water, deep breathing, MLD, fairly decent food choices. Off to bed and will don nighttime garments. Tomorrow I have weights and cardio scheduled. Working inside on the treadmill, whether I like it or not! Have decided I can't wait to when I am forced by the change in weather to adjust. Not that I won't continue outside anymore, but I just need to get my feet wet.
