Bone Mets Thread

Thank you for the information! Great post & glad I checked in this morning since I woke up feeling more pain today. I'm starting to notice the weather seems to affect the pain as well. Rain, cooler weather, both seem to make it worse. I am not a good patient when it comes to pain. I've always been extremely healthy and even though I had bone pain during chemo my first time around, I was able to tolerate it because I knew it would be related to a specific period of time then be over. I don't see this being over. I've really got to work on my outlook. There are just too many out there living with a lot worse. ATTITUDE, ATTITUDE, ATTITUDE!! Work it, Firelady!!

Firelady, I think it's ok to be upset about things like this, even if there are people with worse conditions in whatever way! It's cancer and it's upsetting, period.
And, having said that, I know exactly what you mean about the bone pain before and now--actually the whole treatment plan seemed a lot easier when it had an end date. I'm starting radiation this morning to try and fix some of this pain and I'm really looking forward to it!
So, yeah, work it and don't waste time feeling too bad, but I say don't feel bad about feeling bad either! I think it's ok to say "this sucks" and then try to make things better and move on as much as you can

It does suck!! And so NOT what I saw in my future! Guess that's an understatement for us all, huh? Good luck with your radiation! Mine did work wonders in the thoracic area. Still got to figure out why the Xgeva shot made things worse, but have an appt coming up soon. Hope to get some answers then. Thank you all for your responses. The information, support & encouragement from these boards is beyond measure!

Just wrote and lost a lenthy post, so here goes shorter version... In hospital this a.m....excruciating right leg pain that sent me to ER yesterday turned out to be a fractuted hip. No fall... just something spontaneous were I didn't even know I had mets! This truly does suck! Waiting for docs to review MRI and decide what to do. Surgery and rads both menioned by different doc. Any advice or experience welcome!

Deanna, I'm so sorry to hear this! Do you know where the fracture is? Depending on that and how extensive the mets are you may be looking at a hip replacement. I do hope for you that it doesn't come to that but the rads will certainly slow the cancer and relieve the pain some what.
I'm sorry to say that you may be looking at a lengthy recovery but please know that we will be here to support you all the way.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

hello everyone!! I have a question. I have BC in my sternum and surrounding lymph nodes. I did rads to sternum and man that took the pain right away!! soo now fast forward 6 weeks I had a hysterectomy as I am 39 and started Arimidex. Has anyone taken it and had success on helping kill the lymph nodes??? Thanks ladies!!

Deanna,
Sorry for your pain. I have not had hip fractures at this pt., but did have recurrence of spinal bone mets. They did spot radiation for 10 days & switched from Femera to Aromasin & Afinitor. Hope your treatment gets you stable again.

Great post, Linda. Thanks for the encouragement Chrissy and Macyhen and thanks for the Femera advice, Macyhen! I'm on Day 19, have not smoked 494 cigarettes, and have saved nearly $500 (cigs are about $25 a pack here, so it's way expensive). I think the combo of menopause, Femera, and quitting smoking is what is making me a bit bitchy and grumpy. I had some mood swings before quitting smoking, but they've gotten a bit more intense and I've been more grumpy since I quit. That said, I'm glad I've quit and I don't intend to go back to it. I'm quite proud of my hubby, who has also quit, and who smoked a lot more than I did. We're putting aside the money we've saved by not smoking and planning to do something fun for ourselves.
Thanks again, and hugs to all!

Deanna,
I had a met to the right femoral head (blastic lesion) that my ortho onc. thought they could treat without surgery and with radiation only. During that time, I experienced significantly increased pain, which turned out to be a fracture. I had a partial hip replacement about 10 days later. At the time, I was told that if the break didn't extend through the head, that there were some other surgical options other than replacement. I didn't ask more questions because I was told this didn't pertain to me, as my fracture nearly went through the entire femoral head (ball part of the hip). I had the partial hip replacement, was walking with a walker the next day, and went home after two nights. If you end up needing a replacement or have further questions, please let me know, and I would be glad to answer them. (As a side note, I am working out and keeping up with two young kids.)

Deanna- One more note - I was told depending on the situation that sometimes surgeons like radiation before for a neater surgery or after to clean up margins.

CJRT... Just wrote a long post and lost it...arghhhh! Quick version...thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I've been having a bit of a pity party today -- lots of tears -- and reading your post helped a lot. Haven't talked to my surgeon yet, but it sounds like my fracture is at the very top of the femur -- not in the hip itself -- so I'm anxious to find out if he'll just pin it or ???., Surgery just rescheduled for the a.m., which means I get to eat tonight! First meal since yesterday a.m. when I headed for the ER! Thanks again for sharing. Hugs, Deanna

dlb823, Good luck with your surgery tomorrow! I hope it helps with the pain. I had a similar fracture last June, Was having lots of pain in my right hip with walking, Xrays revealed no fracture, Had 13 of 14 radiation treatments for pain with no improvement, Then MRI showed fracture not complete. Had a rod into femur and pin into hip. Pain much relieved after that.. My ordeal was over about 6 weeks. Didn't really know how bad I hurt until I felt better. I encourage you to make sure you get Physical therapy afterwords. I had to really push for it and it sure slowed me down . Continue to improve daily and feeling better, cont to limp some but I really try not to. You are not alone, And I hope your surgery goes well . Redroan

Kate even though Femara is a little pill it's treatment capability is systemic so it will treat the lymph nodes and clear the cancer from them. You have been through a lot so here's hoping the Femara works for a long time for you.
Deanna, good luck with your surgery and YAY! for being able to eat dinner.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

Deanna,
I just saw this and am sorry you are on pain. While surgery is not something anyone likes, I hope it provides you with relief as soon as possible. I'll be thinking about you.

I've been away for awhile and just catching up. dbla823.... Good luck to you in the am. I hope all goes well. I missed some posts asking about radiation, but I'm happy to give my experience, just pm me. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks post radiation and blood counts are starting to recover, but still fatigued. Hip pain seems to be better, but referred pain from spine, nerves, continues. Trying another round of steroids to see if we can get the inflammation down. Hoping, as time goes on, that my pain level is greatly reduced and fun times can be had this spring and summer!

Deanna- I'm thinking of you and sending you positive thoughts! I second the suggestion about physical therapy after the surgery. You're allowed to have a pity party... I definitely did when I found out I was going to have to have the surgery I thought I was going to avoid. Just know that the recovery went much better than I feared. All the best for a quick and smooth recovery.

Deanna - good luck with the surgery. I'd echo thoughts above - physical therapy is a must and I didn't know how much I hurt before surgery until I healed from the surgery. So much better! And glad you get dinner.
Romansma - good luck with the steroids and reduced inflammation. Glad your blood counts are up.
Off line for a few days as I'm on business travel through the end of the week. Wishing everyone the best!

Deanna, thinking of you, hope all goes uneventfully today.

Deanna, will be thing of you and that your surgery is a complete success. We have been working this week with a mission group and just taking a fun today at the beach today. They leave tomorrow and I have an appointment with oncologist to see what the next treatment will be. I pray they find something to slow this train down. Blessing all and have a wonderful day. Kathy

What a wonderfully encouraging group you all are! I ended up having a complete hip replacement yesterday afternoon because there was also a break in my pelvis. Anxiously waiting for the pathology to learn if my mets are that advanced already (yikes, I was just re-dx'd in Jan), or if there's another explanation. Just glad the surgery is behind me, and hoping to regain my mobility. Hugs to all, and prayers for your ONC appt, Kathy, and for all other needs I haven't yet caught up on, but will. Praying for us all. Deanna

Deanna, glad you came through surgery well. Now be sure to treat pain around the clock! Do NOT be a hero - keep pain under control so you don't develop a chronic pain issue (which is caused by being in pain for too long and treating it inadequately). And if you are on narcotic pain meds, be sure to keep lots of fluids going, and treat constipation IMMEDIATELY! And beyond that, rest, watch some TV, SLOWLY get back to your activities, and know that we are here, sending you lovingkindness.

Deanna glad that it's all done and now it time to recover. Take it slowly and do do the exercises given by the PT as they will have you on your feet and back to your normal routine very quickly.
Good luck with it all and as Linda says do stay on top of the pain and the constipation.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

Deanna- so glad that the surgery went well. The first couple days are really tough but you've gotten what is probably the toughest 24 hours out of the way. The way I look at it, wven worst case scenario- the good news with the replacement is that even if it is cancer, it's out of there! Rest and take care of yourself! Sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Wow, Deanna, you're really going through a rough patch to put it mildly. And yet you still end your post with 'praying for us all' in the midst of what you're going through. Keeping you in thought and prayer.

Deanna,
Glad the surgery is over & you recover well.

Yikes! I hope your new hip will be much better than the old one, Deanna! Wishing you a speedy recovery from surgery.

Deanna, wishing you quick healing and lots of good things from that new hip!

Deanna,
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I had the exact same thing happen to me, and had the surgery almost 7 months ago. You have been given great advice...all things that I wanted to say. Physical therapy and pain management being the most important.
I didn't even know I had cancer until my hip issue. Turns out it was stage IV BC with lung and bone mets. I am scheduled next week for mastectomy.
I am thankful for all here who share their experiences so we can learn and heal together.
