We should start talking up the need for more money being available for BC patients for bill paying. If Komen reduced the amount of education money and redirected it AND did the same with those six figure salaries. The organization might redeem itself.

A source to find help with meds and other monies for help with bills can be found through "needymed.org". It's a 501c3 foundation started by a social worker and a doc around 96 or 98. The web site is a bit difficult to navigate, but has resources listed for soooooo much. If anyone has difficulty navigating the pages, PM me and Ill send my phone number. We can chat.

I saw something today that made me think, HURRAY!! Something in this nauseating sea of pink that, I think, is appropriate.

In Canada, today has been proclaimed "Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day" or BRA. Although our government health care plan funds 100% of breast reconstruction, apparently only 1 in 10 women undergo the procedure. So BRA was initiated to bring women together - those who have had reconstruction and those who haven't - so that those who haven't can talk to, see- and feel what the various types of breast reconstruction look like. "Ambassadors" make themselves available for questions and "show" sessions, so those who haven't had the procedure can make informed choices about what they would like to do.

Now, THIS, is something pink that I can support.

I'm going to head over to the bonfire of the goddesses and throw in the fire Big Brother... One would think a country like ours which was built on the foundation of freedom of speech AND which developed the internet...to share information would devolve into a country where he who has the largest access to the media AND can exploit the media and the masses can keep the masses from becoming enlighten as easily as with the click of a button....

This makes me physically ill.  This is a new low for Oregon.  How can we protest.  Pink helmets, gloves, socks......etc.  By the way my oncologists told me today was was still NED.  Great news.

Thanks Spookie.  I know this is off topic but this afternoon when I got my results from my oncologist I went to do my volunteer work at the American Cancer Society.  I had already done 4 hours at the Breast Health Center for the day. I bought groceries for my 94 year old mother and delivered them and visited with her.

I started my drive home and decided to go by the cemetery to talk to my husband who died earlier this year after nearly 47 years of marriage.  I just wanted to tell him my good news.  I know full well he wasn't there and could not hear me but I just need to tell him.  I also fussed at him for leaving me alone.when we had both overcome some huge health problems in our lives.

I am sorry I know none of this has anything to do with all that drated pink stuff but I just need to talk.  For some reason I just can't shut off the tears tonight.

Big hugs to you (((Mimi))) and pleased that you were given good news.

SelenaWolf, thank you for sharing about BRA - what a excellent program. I doubt that would fly over here as there are NHS reconstruction waiting lists (usually longer than a year) for the majority of health care trusts throughout the UK.

OH MIMI great news NED, but so sorry for your loss of DH. I too experienced the same. DH and I were dx'd 3 months apart. His was Lymphoma. He passed. I too talk to him allot, but his ashes are in an URN at bedside.

I spent some time evaluating what was happening in Oregon. The Kay Yow Fund is a new fund started in 2007. She was the head women's basketball coach at North Carolina State University. There were many things I could not locate on their web site. I called them and the next post is a copy of the email I sent them. I will post their response when it is received. I would expect it may take 2-3 weeks for a response. Please, check back to get an answer to your concerns.

    To ALL:

I have begun to change my opinion of this type of pinking. If it causes someone to donate, and those funds are used for a stated purpose which benefits cancer patients, then okay. That may sound simplistic, but it's not. A charity defines it's mission. To get 501c3 tax exempt status, a charitable organization must go through a rigorous process to attain that status from the government. In their reporting to the IRS through the 990 tax form, they have to report how the money is spent. Legal consequences for not reporting all info to the IRS are in place. Independent evaluation of a charity's use of funds is reported by Charity Navigator which also is a 501c3 organization funded by donations. There is another major group doing this, but I'm not familiar with their name.

What we are objecting to is how the money is used. We would prefer a cure. A cure will come with research. Therefore, many here would prefer the monies go to research. But if a charity defines that monies go for mammograms, medical bills, other bills than medical i.e. house payments/food/property taxes etc. AND I/we don't agree with how it's spent then I/we can choose not to donate.

IF we believe an organization is not managing or directing their monies appropriately, we first should get the facts. The BCA questions have proven their worth in that process. AWARENESS funding is a prickly point for us. So, not happy with where the monies are going ? Write them. Talk with friends about organizations that your study has shown to make the best use of the money donated. We as individuals and as a group can make change.

I think the Komen fiasco RE: salaries, will cause allot of charitable organizations to do something to prevent this kind of negative press and public reaction. Brinker's error re: Planned Parenthood, actually, worked to our benefit. It caused the press to report info related to Brinker. When that included reporting on salaries, it put that aspect on our radar. We all are looking more closely at the financials of charities.

Keep asking questions. Keep being concerned. Keep doing something to promote change.

Email sent to Kay Yow Cancer Fund, Director of Operations. today 10/18/2011

Dear Ms. Womack, Your name was given to me by Brenda Speen. I am a member of Breastcancer.org discussion group. BCO is a place that cancer patients, survivors, families, caregivers come to discuss all things breast cancer related. I started a thread last year to evaluate 501c3 organizations. The intent was to have a place where members could get accurate information upon which they could base opinions, support, and donation determinations.

I wanted this thread to be as objective as possible. The Breast Cancer Action (BCA) in Ca. has allowed me to use their questions that they developed for the same purpose. Ms Speen indicated that you would be helpful in answering these questions.

I realize that many answers are on your web site. If you could give a short answer (maximum 3-4 sentences) to each question, then include the link to the particular web page that would be appreciated.

As I reviewed the site I could not find info re: where all the money is dispersed. I found the reference to 8 million collected of which 2.5 million has been allocated to research. Since the mission statement states that research is the primary goal, 2.5 of 8 million is a big discrepancy. I know there must be a better representation of how the money donated is spent.

I indicated to Ms Speen that I could not locate Kay Yow Cancer Fund on Charity navigator (CN). CN is a BIG part of the process in an individuals evaluation of a charity. An additional question to the questions below " Is the fund on CN?

Below are the questions as they appear on the BCO thread:

"The intent of this thread is to list organizations that meet the criteria of the following questions.

    1. Does any money from this purchase go to support breast cancer programs? How much? (My addition--% to recipient and/or % administrative costs)

    2. What organization will get the money? What will they do with the funds, and how do these programs turn the tide of the breast cancer epidemic?

    3. Is there a "cap" on the amount the company will donate? Has this maximum donation already been met? Can you tell?

    4. Does this purchase put you or someone you love at risk for exposure to toxins linked to breast cancer? What is the company doing to ensure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

thinkbeforeyoupink.org/?page_i... The above questions from Think Before You Pink is a project of Breast Cancer Action.

It is imperative that correct information be placed here, so as to avoid conflict with named organization. Check and recheck your facts. Please put - name, address, phone number or web link. SHORT description as to how they meet or don't meet the above questions."

Your assistance is greatly appreciated in this matter

    Sincerely, (real name) sas

I know I have some long posts, but well those that know me get me. Those that know me and object PASS ON BY. LOL.

I have done a few evals of organizations by the questions. They are time consuming and can be frustrating if the info is difficult to locate. When I started, I realize only now, I did them all in a short time span. I don't recommend that approach.

NEW LESSON learned today. MS. Speen @KLF offered to answer the questions. WELLLLLLL cool. Let them do the work, and I can evaluate the response. For the organizations I have done, I first studied all the info then called the highest person in the organization to verify info. Today's lesson--now I'll call and see if I can't get them to answer the questions.

Feel free to use my email as a guide to writing an organization.
