Gatamol, congrats on the twins. I honestly cannot imagine trying to get through pregnancy and chemo. You are one strong lady!

blueflowers, my surgery was 3 months ago. I am do have most of the feeling back under my arm and on the back of my arm. It does take a while though. I still have zingers that shoot through my breast. They are getting less and less as time goes on.

Rosie…and everyone. I hope the numbness goes away sooner than later and we can all get back to "normal" without numbness and zingers! :-)

Headed to my first Radiation tx :-/

I had surgery on the 25th and today I had my follow up visit with my surgeon. I have to have a second surgery. I am so sad. My tumor that was almost 6cm shrunk to just under 5mm. That was great, but I still have a small amount of DCIS left. Mr doctor feels confident that he will get it all and I will have clear margins. I am of course worried, but the way he was talking made it seem like this was sort of routine. He said twice that he feels that I will OK. I do trust him and I'm sure at the end of this I will be OK. My question is: How often does this happen where a second surgery is needed?

MeToo14...I read that additional surgery in needed about 25% of the time after a lumpectomy. It was in the article section on this site.

    Hi Lumpies!

Yippee! Ooo who...celebrating my 2 yr cancerversary with all clear mammo and happy RO visit! Happy Dance :D

Will stay on the 6 mo check in list, but very happy...MO soon and infusion of Zometa to counter AI bone loss.

Am very thankful to y'all...pocket party!

Metoo54 - I was told in the beginning that good surgeons go back for clear margins...fingers&toes crossed for those clear margins...breathe!

Lumpies with pain or numbness or LE ask your BS or RO or MO for RX for PT....it makes a big difference. Also, check out what programs are available to support you and your family...CastingforRecovery and Little Pink Houses of Hope.

    You got this Lumpies!

Gatomal, I am stunned by the enormity of important activities on your plate...all at the same general time!!!

First of all, congratulations on your twins (again) pregnancyThumbsUp, but how and why you'd become pregnant at this crucial time is beyond my capabilities for sure.

If your surgeons are okay with this, I wish you all the luck I have available for each one.

Unfortunately I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I certainly would not have been up to trying during treatment! Lol!

Cindy - Yahoo - it's a big dance party - count me in!!!! Congrats and continued good health.  Hugs, Mar

Metoo14 -I had two surgeries - 2nd surgery was really easier since I knew what to expect.  Dr. also did my snb at that time and made sure I had a good large margin.  It isn't uncommon, so I've been told.  Good luck to you and we will be in your pockets!

Update from yesterday (taxol #3 day)

Wow. What a whirlwind day for appts. I met with my BS and MO and the plastic surgeon(with whom I didn't have an appointment) to discuss lumpectomy, c-section, chemo and recon plan. I felt like a total VIP who donated millions to UCSF. I saw all of them within 30 min, got an ultrasound, set a c section date (1/5/15) a surgery date 1/13/15 if the tumor gets bigger after I stop chemo for a break next week (12/10/14. Wonderful to start getting things nailed down. I need prayers that this tumor doesn't get bigger between 12/17 and 1/5. If it doesn't, I can restart taxol after preg to finish and see if it's working, my breast size will settle s bit, and then they can do lumpectomy w lift/ reduction at same time. I never thought they could do lift at the same time, I. E. Before rads. PS says he compensates for the possible shrinkage of breast from rads, but the vascular supply is better before rads, bonus--I would love to get lots of the non-cancerous breast tissue looked at by path. I can't get an ZmRI due to a spinal implant. So we are all in the dark about staging, bilateral tumors, etc.

Congrats to all who just made it through surgery. Good healing and no complications

Surgery 2 days ago.  Working through the pain.  Removed bandages tonight for first shower, I'm overwhelmed with the appearance.  Thought I was well prepared, guess I wasn't.

Don't have results so not sure if cancer was in the lymph nodes.

    Scared, embarrassed, mad.

Cindy:  GREAT news - I too am doing the happy dance for you!

MeToo:  I needed a second lumpectomy as well.  I don't know why but that second one seemed A LOT easier!  It is very emotional to hear you need to go in again but I was so thankful that my surgeon wanted to make sure all margins were clear enough.  I hope that you have an easier time with the second procedure as I did - please feel free to PM me.

Gatomal:  You are in my prayers and it sounds like you have an amazing medical team.  So happy they can do the lift at the same time.

Gatomal, glad you have such a great team in place. Prayers that your tumor keeps shrinking and the babies keep growing! I don't know how you're managing both at the same time. You are amazing. Keep thinking positive and concentrating on the twins! HUGS!!!

Gatamol I will keep you in my prayers!

Congrats Cindy- Happy Dance.  How long were you on a 6 month check up schedule. I am on a 3 month for 2 yrs.

Metoo- There was 6 of us diagnosed in the family this year with breast cancer ages 33 to 65 .  4 on one side of my family - one on the other and an inlaw and out of the 6-- 4 had to have surgery twice.  The second surgery they said was much easier as it did not involve any lymphnodes.  My sister asked to not be put under as the tube in her throat really had bothered her so the 2nd surgery they didn't use a tube, she was asleep but not as under as she woke up when they were finishing .

Question about preventing lymphedema. I was told that since I had nodes removed, I should never have blood drawn, IV, blood pressure taken, or any injections on my right side ever again. Unfortunately the right side is where all my good veins are. I Am really suffering with placing IV on the left side, and blood draws as well.

Yesterday, the nurse placing my IV said that The docs are overly cautious, and I'm more likely to get lymphedema from lifting grocery bags or gardening than from a sterile needle. Also, women with double mastectomies get chemo in their arms, they don't use their feet! Is anyone else avoiding IV on the side that they had their lumpy

I avoid all of that on my right arm...I had 11 nodes removed...I was also being careful about carrying heavy packages as well...not so much now during the holidays...lol! There is also a lymphedema board and those ladies may have more info. On this ...I am careful with my right arm though.

Regarding double mastectomies...not sure all ladies who get bmx have lymph nodes removed?? Some may be prophylactic removal which I think would not require lymph nodes removed?? But I could be very wrong !

    Try the lymphedema board...Rosie

sjacobs...wanted to edit my post but deleted it...oopsy! I do avoid all of that on my right arm, but I don't have issues with bad veins. I also avoided carrying heavy packages...not so much now with the holidays...lol!

Go to the lymphedema board and maybe those ladies have more insight...good luck! Rosie

Thank You Lumpies! Here's to cancerversaries all around forever!!!

Sjacobs - I'm very cautious about LE. I've had swelling or 3rd girl from the start and PT has helped keep it down...I wear a compression garment and NO blood work, BP, IV on my LE side! No way... Be proactive

Ndgrr - from the start I said I would come back every 6 months...I wanted to not think about c at all! So the longer gab was of my choosing and no I didn't stagger docs...all usually the same week and then gone for 6 mos:))) getting my new normal groove.

Gatamol - congrats! Your team is amazing and you deserve the best! UCSF is great! Keep those babes safe and post a pic when they arrive! Lumpies love baby pics! Blessings :)))

Rosiesride - yes, pamper the arm! Watch the weightlifting...even a heavy purse, now who would have one of those, can trigger...

Peggy - hee hee you are the weight lifter...but the rest of us need to error on the side of cation...LE is no fun and it is forever.

sjacobs, I stay away from everything on my right side. Even with only 4 lymph nodes removed, I've had problems with trunkal lymphadema. Not bad but enough that I went to see A PT for it and my fiancee was taught the lymph massage so help.

Had a great check-up with my breast surgeon today. All is fine. She gave me the order for my first mammogram in April. She also said she will likely have me get an MRI. I have dense breasts and asked if maybe I should have an ultrasound. I know I have microcalcifications in my non-BC breast. BS said that the mammogram will be better for the microcalcifications. She knows what she's doing, so that's what I'll do. Always nice to have a good check-up!
