Peggy....sorry to hear about your experience. I go the local YMCA and the classes are geared towards beginners. We have great instructors and they go nice and slow. They do have more advanced classes but I tend to stick with the beginner even though I've been practicing yoga for years. Our instructors always do the poses with us. Sounds like a good yoga DVD might be a better option.

TgTg, a neighboring city's rec dept is offering Hatha Yoga starting in 2 weeks. 8 1-1/2 hour classes for $96. That sounds better. YMCAs (just aren't around here). So I think that's what I'll do. It will be a bitchy drive at rush hour (5:45-7:15) so I have to weigh that into the equation. Good thought about my Medicare medigap plan maybe paying for something. Trouble is most times there's nothing close by that any of the programs cover (that I've seen). When you live in a city with issues that isn't affluent, you don't get the good freebies or discounts at nearby places. The DVDs sound good too. I'm quite willing to work them. Thanks. Outside where it's warm sounds wonderful!!!!

It truly never occurred to me that the teach wouldn't do the poses with us. I sure know better now. Thanks for the encouragement, Nash!

That's really disappointing, Peggy.
I'm going to go to the breast care center's classes because I've heard the instructor's really good - and I'll be able to keep it up after surgery (assuming that day ever comes...). In the meantime, I've chosen a couple DVDs and am considering another on Amazon. I will admit that I am just as picky about the settings as I am the instructor on DVDs, being very, very partial to beach settings.
I hope you can put together something that works for you, Peggy. Having your friend's coaching even a couple of times should be helpful.

Oh, sorry Peggy! I would probably get DVDs and do it at home, but that's always my way. Classes could be fun but I never really want to go out at night to get to them, and I don't want to go in the day because I'm doing other things then. I like the sound of Trudi's Arizona one!

Yes, it was disappointing, Hopeful.
Kay, I may wind up doing DVDs just for the same reason you are. I prefer to not to out at night either for that. So I'll cogitate with big glass of wine and see if I can read the dregs to decide what to do One thing about using DVDs is I can do them whenever *I* want!

I'm with the two of you - I normally prefer to work out at home and hate driving in the city at night. It has to be something I've decided I'm better off not doing on my own to get me to go to a class. In this case, I like the idea of the camaraderie - something I always enjoyed back in the days when I did water aerobics.
Peggy, I'm intrigued by the mental image of you reading the dregs of your glass of wine. Red or white? Let us know what they say

Hopeful, RED. I'm so plebian I drink only Riunite Lambrusco. Maybe it's so cheap it doesn't have dregs. But it has to be more expensive than that standby when I was in college: Thunderbird! I also think the camaraderie would be nice.

Oh, gosh, Peggy - now I'll have that 'Riunite on ice' ditty running through my head! I hadn't thought of that in years. Do you remember it?

Kay- good news!!I hope Shaz is doing ok?
Peggy that is rotten about your class. I am glad even though I am a newbie that the instructor is so sweet and takes time to show everyone, I may not be able to do all the poses but she says and keeps reassuring us to do what we can and it will come. Its also very inexpensive. 8 - I hour sessions for 40.00. Its the only class in the area so is booked up for months.
Ocean. I had internal radiation which was a CT scan each am then a radiation treatment in the am and pm for 5 days where they dropped radioactive pellets into my breast into a catheter I had placed in my breast. This was all to be done before chemo so it took my mind off a bit of waiting for the Oncho test results to get back since my MO assumed I wanted chemo and didn't order the test until I specifically asked him too. He said " Oh you want that test" UMMM yes!! sheesh- if it had not been for my niece DX with breast cancer 2 months before me I wouldn't have known to ask.. The MO was too busy lining up a trial for me with the Mayo clinic. I got a new MO after that. sheesh
I overdid it at work by going back too soon after internal radiation. I had this radiation about 2 weeks after surgery so any healing that had been done was reversed and I ended up in the hosp for a couple days when done. I went back to work and was left alone. I did a lot of computer work but what got me was trying to play catch up on my work so opening and closing the fire proof filing cabinets and just not sitting still at all. Dr put me on a month leave of absence and my job was eliminated when I was gone. sigh... made me cry. Through treatments I kept thinking that this is just temporary you will be back to work and back to your life soon. I tried and yet they didn't care.. ufff
Today I went to clinic to have my ears checked I have ear infection and while there he pressed on my tummy left or my belly button- I said OUCH!!.I told him I thought I was ovulating and wondered why I would since I thought Tamoxifen stopped that. He told me that the pain was too high up for the overies and he didn't like that pain at all so sent me for a CT scan right away. So now I wait for the results. Sheesh... I am grateful though I have a great GP he is more willing to order tests then the MO's I have had. He says if there is pain you do not mess around.

Wow, i am so overwhelmed by the support I have from all of you. I've been trying to read a few posts when I can. It feels like I've been away for ages.
I ended up with a migraine before surgery! Unfortunately they didn't want to give me any drugs. The anesthesiologist rang the ward and told them to give me some maxalon and put me on a drip to hydrate me, but because I was so dehydrated the nurse couldn't get a needle in. She missed once and didn't want to try again. So she rang through to get an anesthesiologist to come down and do it. By the time this was done they only had time to put the maxalon in before I was called in.
The anesthesiologist that was looking after me was great. He got me on a drip straight away and covered up my eyes before wheeling me into the operating room. He also increased the amount of saline and pain med in the drip so I didn't wake up with it.
The doctor said the surgery went well and was a bit more complicated due to the previous surgery. I'm still in hospital, I will hopefully go home tomorrow. Yay! Fingers crossed its the last operation! I will get the results next Wednesday. Hugs to all of you. Now I need to go back and reread some posts. I do remember seeing that katfry had some great results

Shaz, So good to hear from you. How is your arm and underarm feeling?
0 -
Hi sweet hope, it feels very swollen under my arm and my arm feels tight, which is frightening me a bit. The nurses said it is normal and that I may experience tennis ball size lump under there which may need to be drained 2x per week for a few weeks! Not something I was expecting.
0 -
Hopeful, I do NOT remember that ditty about Ruinite. No ice for me though
Ndgrrl, so glad your yoga class experience has been excellent. I can see why so many people want to sign up.
Shaz, glad your surgery is over. Rotten about your migraine at least they were doing their best for you. Sad to say that your ALND is going to really bothersome. If you expect it then it isn't quite as scary. Ice is helpful. Do the exercises you are given faithfully. If the docs say drain it, do it. It seemed to me that everything I wore rubbed it. But then you know that from your surgery 2 weeks ago. Your poor armpit. HUGS on a speedy and uneventful recovery!!!

Shaz, sorry you are experiencing SE. But I am glad you did not wake up in recovery hearing the nurse say, "She's crying, more dilaudid." (I got 3 pain shots in recovery with no relief.). So you will do fine. I'm happy to report that a lot of the time my arm feels normal now. It takes some time for the nerves that were disturbed to relax. Get some good pain meds and be gentle on yourself. No lifting anything right now!

shaz....I bet your glad that's over!! Hope your recovery will be quick. Stay hydrated....keeps the migraines away. ice is very important to keep the swelling down. This will soon all be a dim memory. Hang in there.

Lisa, that's really nice! Thanks for sharing the article with us. I definitely did not find the right studio. I'll do something else. DVDs or something. I do want to do yoga and am really motivated so doing it at home may work out for me right now. HUGS!

Shaz, Glad you were able to check in and that this surgery is over. I hope you have a swift, uneventful recovery. Listen to your body and give yourself time to recover. Easier said than done for me... and you, too!

Shaz, so good to hear from you. Whew, that sounds like it was rough! I hope you're feeling better already.

Shaz - So glad your surgery is over and you are doing well. Hopefully your recovery is fast and uneventful.

Just got home from my surgery. Everything went well, they were able to get me in earlier than scheduled, so now I get to rest from home. Everything went very smooth and I am surprised to be in little pain (although still under the influence of what they gave me at hospital.) Praying that everyone else who has upcoming surgery fares as well as I have so far. Now to wait for Path reports. They say I could hear as soon as Friday . For anyone living in Indiana, I must say that IU Health (I went through Goshen site)has been truly wonderful.

Lisa, I read the article, and you and Hamilton College rock! Utica sounds like a great place. Too bad it's up north in that winter territory. Couldn't do it. Shoveled enough snow as a teenager in Pittsburgh. Moved south forty years ago.
You've got the good schools, but we've got the good food.

Lisa, glad to hear you're home and all went smoothly. Crossing my fingers that your path report comes in on Friday and is nothing but good news.
Shaz - take it easy. That lymph node dissection is a horse of a different color and takes a lot more healing than the lumpectomy and SNB. It's also a pain - such an inconvenient spot to have an incision, etc. I hope none of this triggers another migraine. ((((Shaz))))
LisaJ - enjoyed the article! Thanks for sharing it. Sweet Hope, your comment on it cracked me up! Between that and your husband's proposal, you are 2 for 2 today.
OK - I don't have anything personally humorous to lighten your days but if you haven't seen the Friskies "Dear Kitten" ads on You Tube, they are fun. My cat even likes watching them!

LisaZ....welcome home!!! Don't forgrt to ice the area to keep swelling down. Glad everything went smoothly. Fingers crossed for great path report!!

way to go lisaz! So happy that is over. Rest and feel better. Keep us posted on your healing!

Hi Shaz: Hope you're feeling better and it's not hurting too much. I did not have anything done with lymphnodes so I can only imagine how you were hurting.
LisaZ: Yay! So very happy all went well. After my lumpectomy, ice was my best friend!!!!!
Both of you need to drink LOTS of water and rest!!!!!

LisaZ, glad it's over. So happy you're home. Keep icing the underarm and poor girl. And, most importantly, take it easy for a few days. Great that IU has the facility that works for you! HUGS!!

Peggy, and Kay--Yes, it surely is nice to do yoga at home and on my own schedule--and imagining that I am dong it at Canyon Ranch or some other pricey spa in Sedona! BUT if I have paid for a yoga class or gym membership, I tend to be a whole lot more faithful about going! Therein lies the rub of the dvd for me--along with having to pause it and replay the instructions if a position doesn't feel right (not the same as having guidance from an instructor). Of course now, post b.c., staying tit and relaxed to stave off recurrence is a really powerful incentive too!
I had started yoga with a wonderful instructor, but after several years her husband was transferred to Pittsburgh and we lost her. Then tried a yoga group at the university where I was a faculty member, but that one was closer to "hot" yoga than to hatha! That's when I bought the dvd--as a stopgap while looking for a new instructor (we weren't Y members then, since we were both still teaching and could use the fitness facilities at our universities).
To all of you who have cleared the surgery hurdle and are recovering--congratulations! May that recovery be uneventful, and may all the path reports be good news. Shaz-- even though your recovery will be a tad taxing for a while, the pain and discomfort will end--just keep thinking positively and keep hydrating. You will all return to normal in due time, but that normal will just be slightly differen ! Trudi

Trudi, just bought a DVD - Hawaii. That works too. True, you do tend to be more faithful when belonging to a gym or studio. But when the weather is crummy or the thought of going out just doesn't appeal, then home does just fine! I know nothing of hot yoga. I think I'll go basic for awhile
