Lumpectomy Lounge....let's talk!

Nash54, wasn't that segment amazing?? My husband and I watched it tonight and he, a recently retired M.D., was quite astonished by the research. It seems very promising.
I'm quite looking forward to the Ken Burns/PBS special that begins tomorrow night at 9 p.m. Much of it was filmed at Johns Hopkins, where I've been getting my own treatment.

I saw that. The husband of a dear friend is dying from brain cancer. They live in Australia and I don't think there is a trial on this there. It's such a devastating disease. I hope that they've finally found the "magic bullet" to kill cancer - all kinds of cancer.

I'm also going to watch the Ken Burns special tomorrow. Very exciting research.

Thanks for the PBS reminder ...just set my DVR.

“Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” a six-hour, three-part film series airing on PBS March 30, 31, and April 1, 2015 tells the story of cancer’s complicated past and the doctors who questioned convention in search of a cure.
Today, about 60 percent of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer choose to undergo lumpectomy surgery followed by radiation as their course of treatment.
It’s a choice that was hard-won. The most common procedure to treat invasive breast cancer in America was once the most controversial surgery in the medical community.

Just checking in to say I finished rads today! Yippee. I feel so relieved to be done, with skin in tolerable shape (red, itchy, swollen, but not blistered or broken)—and no BC-related appointments in sight until late in July, when I have my follow-up with BS and follow-up mammogram. Depending on how things look then, I may meet with the PS again around then to try to decide if I want to do any revision of my lumpy boob—or maybe not. Follow-up with nurse practitioner at the rads center isn't until mid-November. I feel as if I just got a "get out of jail free" card!
Hope everyone is doing well!

FANTASTIC Kay!!!! How lovely to forget about everything for awhile. Glad you're in decent shape. I'll be interested in hearing about your appt with the PS. I'm not sure I'd be up to surgery for my lumpy boob either. HUGS!!!

That is great kay!!!! Congrats on finishing.
I get to go have my ovaries removed now. Yeah rah! Then they are going to switch me from tamoxifen to an AI. I really can't wait to get back to "normal'.

Jeanelle, how thrilling. Hope you're okay with that. Another surgery is always daunting. But you'll do just fine! We'll see you at the Arimidex lounge pretty soon.
HUGS!!!

Congrats Kay!! I remember the relief of being done with that part of all this!! I see my PS on Friday to see about more reconstruction on my lumpy boob. I had fat injections back in November. They seem to have did really well, sort and the dent is much better also the scar is a lot better. It would rub my bra where the lace attached and it was hard to find bras that didn't have that lace- Now I can wear any bra and it doesn't hurt.
Jeanette I just had my ovaries out 4 weeks ago along with several hernias fixed. I see my MO on Friday as he wants to switch me to an Al too. I have been off Tamoxifen since a week before surgery.

shuf, you're so right, rads was very much like having ground hog day for a month for me! Funny.

Rekidal, thanks! It's wonderful to wake up today knowing I don't need to wrestle the traffic to get to rads. Now if my skin will just settle down (which I think it's starting to do) and I can get my energy back, I'll be even happier. Walking with my dogs yesterday after rads, which I did most days during treatment, I have to admit that my legs kind of felt like they were made of lead. Riding my horse later today, though. If I keep acting normal, hoping soon I'll begin to feel more normal. (It would also go a long way toward lifting spirits if winter would finally get out of here. Cold and rain for today, if not even snow. Grrrr.)

Ndgrrl, thanks. I hope your PS and MO appointments on Friday go well. I remember badgering you with questions about the fat grafting earlier, and I'm still trying to learn what I can about that. Now that I'm done with rads, as everything begins to settle down, I'll finally see what I'm left with here. I'm fairly reluctant to go through any more surgery anytime soon, but . . . I'm also not very happy with the aftermath of my Lx. Right now I can tell I have a little swelling from rads, so it's hard to say, but if that goes down and is followed by significant shrinkage, that's going to bother me. Bras are already a challenge for me, between the Lx and my old separated shoulder on the same side, which means that bra straps fall down and rub the bump on my shoulder etc., and the fact that I now have the big dent on the underside of my boob, a big, ugly scar, and downward-pointing nipple . . . and going out of the house braless just doesn't do it for me, because being quite small to begin with, I feel I need a little help from a lightly-padded bra just to even out my shape. So I've been on the Great Bra Search for awhile now, even though I know things will probably still change. Very hard to find a bra that fits, is flattering, doesn't have scratchy lace, isn't over-padded so I feel like I have a stuffed animal strapped to my chest, and does have either inset straps, racerback, or cross back straps. I have found a couple that almost work, but who knows how it will be as things settle down after rads? I'm so glad to hear that you've had good results so far from the fat injections, and also glad that you have the ovary/hernia surgery behind you now!

Hi Maggie Cat and Shuf -
Saw my BS today and checked me over and said there isn't anything there to suggest lymphedema. So I am in the free and clear for now.

gatomal made it through anesthesia! Gatomal Breasts' are on fire., especially underneath the Breast. It's hard to tell how much she took, what size they are etc, but there is a lot gone. Recovery room Rn said four nodes taken, by surgeon told hubby 7/8 with no Cancer in sentinel node? I am waiting to talk to both surgeons myself tonight. I hope its good news. Oh and the ALND was done from inside the Breast, not with a separate incision, so no underarms incisions, which I am bery happy about since it seems like those hurt the worst. Thank you for all your prayers. I am seriously so happy to be awake again after anesthesia. It was my greatest fear, never waking up to see my babies again. I felt all the good vibes today. Hugs! my surgeon is dr Esserman at Ucsf. She sang me to sleep holding my hand. I requested Etta James at last. she printed out the lyrics taped them to the IV pole, and sang until I was asleep. Amazing doctor.
