Anyone want to meet up in Pasadena, CA next Mon, Tue or Wed? The weather should be sunny and 64 degrees. Yay! It's my b-day next week (51), and my DH and I are taking a few days to visit the Norton Simon Museum, see Neil Tyson-DeGrasse, go to Bullets on Broadway at the Pantages, and wrap it up with a walk in the Huntington Gardens. If you'll be in LA and are going to any of these places or just want to meet at a coffee shop in Pasadena, I'd love to meet.
Molly - I know you're down that way. We talked about getting a coffee once before!
Also, I can add you on Fitbit if you PM me your email address. That is the only way I know how to to do it! Otherwise, I'll have to wait for my son to come and visit and do it. Haha

You all are making me feel I need go get a fitbit!

I love mine peachy! I'm going to share my favorite trick. When I'm doing dishes or folding laundry or something like that on my feet, I turn on music and dance along. It really piles up the step, and also feels good!

How many ladies were sick when they woke up from the lumpectomy surgery? I am booked for my lump eviction tomorrow afternoon. Did you feel ill right away or was it when you were home?

BrightSocks: if it's any comfort, I never did feel ill in the sense of queasy. For any of my surgeries.
Edit: I didn't have 'nausea intervention' that I"m aware of for the first four. A scopolamine patch for the revision/reduction, on December 10, which I pulled off as soon as I got home, because it was making me feel funny. Go figure. We all react differently to medication.

Brightsocks, I did not have any nausea after my lumpectomy, nor the re-excision 2 weeks later. In the past I have had nausea with vomiting following surgery, so I made sure to let the anesthesiologist know that. He gave me some kind of powerful anti-nausea drug, plus put a scopolamine patch behind my ear which I believe stayed there until the next morning. If you are particularly concerned about it, talk to the nurse in pre-op, as well as the anesthesiologist. I think I told everyone, including the floor sweeper!

I wish I could help but only surgery I have had so far was wisdom teeth!
Thinking of you & good luck!!!!!!!!!!

My friend is going to be with me all day tomorrow going from the wire stop to the hospital. I would hate to be sick in her car on the way home.

Brightsocks, I get sick from anesthesia. Just ask the anesthesiologist for something and hey can give you something to help prevent it. .(Posted this originally from my phone. Mistake.)

I am glad your friend will be with you!!! When you are able please check in with us.

LovesToFly, I can't really say anything to sex with a partner because that has been a no-go for quite a few years (Parkinson's) and for a long time I was just too exhausted to care about anything but falling asleep. Masturbation is satisfactory. Even with my Arimidex lubrication doesn't seem to be an issue. Don't know about chemo and sex.
BrightSocks, I had no nausea or any aftereffects from the anesthesia. I wonder if I got propofol (that doesn't leave hangovers for me). It took an hour or so for me to wake up after the surgery, I think. And I was a bit groggy. But once home and re-hydrated, I was pretty good. Didn't want to set the world on fire but I was social and hungry.
Dammit, Sloan, I wanna be with you! Maybe sometime. I just have to win the lottery and move to SoCal! Have a good time celebrating your 51st!
HUGS!

I am sure I will be back on tomorrow night asking further questions about the next stop in this process. Then I will be thinking about all the different "what if" combinations.
0 -
BrightSocks, turn the mind off tomorrow. Re-read your favorite book, pig out on your favorite TV series. You can plot all the "what ifs" until the cows come home. Nothing you do will change whatever the path report says. It's beyond your control. Just float along and deal with it when you get the report. Sometimes that is really helpful (if you can manage it). If you have questions, of course, ask them. Dancing in your pocket!!!
HUGS!!

Dear LovesToFly:
I loved the "boiled rice" post too. lol.
FYI: If you put a slice of cheese over the rice and melt it in the microwave oven, your kids will LOVE it. It is easy and wonderful!
As far as sex goes, I am assuming that if you feel ok that you may want to have sex. If you are feeling nauseous or suffering from other side effects, you definitely would not want to have sex. As you said, your husband will understand and be supportive. However, if you need a lubricant, please check with your doctor because you don't want to use an estrogen based lubricant.
A lubricant is sold in the gift shop at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center that was approved by doctors at the hospital. It is called, "Pink" - "Silicone Lubricant for Women with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera/Hypoallergenic."

I have heard that this product is great. A friend of mine who is a bc survivor swears by this product. I bought it because I knew that I was going to be medically induced into menopause and I was going to be taking Arimidex/Anastrazole. I was very afraid of dryness as a side effect. Luckily, I do not have any sexual side effects from the Anastrazole or from menopause so I have not needed to try the lubricant. Thank God!
I hope that you will feel ok and good luck.

Brightsocks, if you're afraid you might throw up in the car, I have some suggestions:
1) pack yourself some large Ziploc bags to carry with you. Open 1 or 2 in the car so they're ready to go and you don't have to fumble around, if you're sick.
2) pack a wet washcloth in another Ziploc. Keep it on the seat next to you.
3) bring an empty gift bag and a peppermint.
4) if you feel sick, open the window and wipe your face with the wet washcloth. Put the washcloth to your neck.
5) If you throw up in the Ziploc, quickly grab the gift bag and shove the offending Ziploc in there without looking at it, if you can. Keep the window open and put the washcloth in your mouth so you won't have to taste vomit. If the peppermint will help, and not make you feel sicker, just suck on it for a minute, then spit it out.
Hope this helps. I have a long history of motion sickness and vertigo. I know all the tricks,LOL

thanks all! I think it's too late to get Ativan tonight, perhaps I will take some melatonin which might help me sleep a bit. Then I can call tomorrow and see if I can get an Ativan for tomorrow night. Normally I would just have a glass of wine before bed, but of course I'm scared to!
My kids both love cheese with rice. One of them put cheese egg and butter (obviously she is not vegan like me). The other used avocado. I put eggplant curry in mine.

Dear MustLovePoodles:
What great advice.
Dear BrightSocks:
Good luck tomorrow. I never had any problems with anesthesia and I have had numerous surgeries. Hopefully, you will be fine too. As everyone said, let the doctors know so that they can give you anti nausea meds. Let them know about your anxiety as well. I recovered immediately from all of my lumpectomies and I felt fine right away.
However, my bc surgery took a very long time. The surgery was delayed and my surgery started much later than expected. I was in surgery for many hours because I had the double lumpectomy, the SLNB sugery, and the breast reduction/breast lift to both breasts. Also, my bs made the incisions around my areola so that I would not have scars. That surgery is more complicated and takes more time than an incision made above the lump. I don't remember anything at all after my surgery. They kept me in the hospital over night because it was so late. My mother told me that I was hilarious because I was talking gibberish after the surgery. My mother said that she and my bs were actually laughing out loud. I woke up the next morning feeling absolutely fine and having no clue that I did a comedy routine after surgery.

Dear Sloan:
Happy Birthday!
Dear LovesToFly:
Avodado - what a great idea. Of course curry is always great! I love spice. Good luck tomorrow.

LovestoFly- about the sex part...I think that you may or may not want to do that at certain parts of your treatment....however, not to be too personal....there were times when we had sex during chemo...and, the connection was the best part...different than before my diagnosis and yet in some ways the same. I think communication is just the main KEY to it all....the thing is that they make so many products to make things work. When you are p to it..explore the options.

thanks guys, I am totally cool with the fact that there will be times that I won't be up to that, I'm kind of anticipating it! I'm just hoping that there will also be some times that I am up to it. I would really hate to go four months. Both physically and emotionally
Not tomorrow, Wednesday. I guess I could use a bit of luck tomorrow, I am meeting the geneticist, having my blood work, and having a CAT scan in the evening. But chemo day is Wednesday! I guess I'm just at the point where I'm having trouble sleeping. I had trouble last night, and today was just a normal workday! Anticipating a bad night tonight, because I always do the night before busy days...bc related or not… I just start Worrying about fitting everything in, if the timing will work out OK and traffic will cooperste, etc. even though things almost always do work out in that way.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLOAN!!!!!

Great tips ladies thank you all. I will bring a few more items in my bag. My friend that driving is great at asking questions and takes notes. So I can just not worrie about anything. I am not that stressed for I just want it out. Another friend told me about asking for a pill to relax but when I called today the nurse made me feel like it was a very strange request. I don't think so since the dentist asks before gum surgery if you would like one or a drug like it.

yes communication is so important. One of the reasons I didn't really look into the cold cap until today was I knew it was expensive and I didn't want to bring that extra expense on us. This morning I realized that if I didn't look into it I would be sorry, I asked my husband what he thought, and he immediately told me I should look into it. He is definitely not controlling with regards to money, and if I want to do I can certainly pay for it myself, but that really meant a lot to me,because he is very careful with money, and I know that he is not worried about me losing my hair and probably thinks it's a big expense for that. But even so when I suggested he did not bat an eye at the price, and told me to look into it. I decided not to do it, but I'm so glad I asked him, because it just made feel lucky to have him and know he'd support it.

Dear 614: Thanks so much for sharing all that information. Were your nodes positive because I did read that the reason they recommend the mastectomy is because with 2 cancers in the same breast there is a greater chance of node involvement and that scares the Sh**t out of me! I had my biopsy today for the second area and although I'm trying to be realistic a small piece of me is hoping that this area is benign! Thanks so much again!
