I remember back in the 70s when men with long long hair was common. We were at the airport and there was this thin person with waist length thick glossy gorgeous reddish brown hair... you couldn't see the front or determin the gender, just tight jeans. My one brother made an off handed remark... gorgeous hair. Well the person turned around and it was a guy with a full beard and I thought my other brother was going to collapse laughing... "Oh yah bro... one for you!" We just lost it laughing... that guy did have hair to die for! From behind he looked just like a girl.

My mother died before the end of WWII. When I read her letters years later, they revealed that she wrote to many servicemen, often brothers of her friends or guys she had met at a USO. Just newsy about things at home and so they would get mail at mail call. I'll bet a lot of people did that.
