I had a great cat fix the past two days. Two friends who live together have a cat each. 3 others including me were visiting. Both cats went around to every person for petting and lap time. One is a dainty grey and white cat with huge ears. The other was a stray she began feeding and eventually turned he turned into a house cat. We decided with the help of a cat book that he was likely a rag doll which is know for affection. He kept us busy supplying laps and giving pets. It was so nice. We have really missed having a cat.

Hi, cat ladies. I was cat sitting for a friend. She has a very large gray and white male cat. He was full of purrs, sat on my lap and then bit me. Luckily it didn't break the skin. I can't get the picture to post.

Oh dear, how very cat!

The grey and white cat was like that where we were visiting. They decided I was both experienced and quick to avoid the bite. I learned the signs with shelter cats.

Wren, I'd love to hear about the signs to look for when they are about to bite.

Look for tail movement (swishing or almost) and a glance backward or sideways at you. If you see those, stop petting if possible and be ready to jerk your hand away. Lots of cats are pretty ok with head petting. More likely to react if you pet them on the upper back. Stay away from the rear body. Also look for ear movement. If you see a cat with flat ears (the airplane) don't touch. It's ready to fight.

Beautiful photos, thanks!

Wren, thank you for this information--I had no idea about the back and there are several that I take care of and after hearing this I will only be petting their head. Glance backward or sideways, got it! I'm really good about not pushing into a cat's space and I'm very respective of their space but with a couple of them I thought that if they wanted their head petted it would be ok the pet their back too. Well now i know! And Simba and Cava thank you for cluing me in.

Wren44: Good advice about petting a cat. My male friend and I were visiting friends of his that owned a Siamese cat who lept on my lap, seemed friendly and was purring when it latched onto my left thumb and would not let go. They had to bang its head to get it to release. As I am sitting there in shock and pain, the darn thing climbed back on my lap purring up a storm and rubbing against me. Lesson learned, I never touched that fiend again. Had to do a long course of Ab since thumb swelled to twice its normal size and I still bear the scars from teeth marks. Love cats, just leery of Siamese ever since.

Some cats get overstimulated and become bitey. Playing with them using a toy (not fingers) is good, too.

I have been away from BCO for a long time but decided to jump back into this thread (the one I like the most!). Our beloved Snickers crossed the Rainbow Bridge at age 19-1/2 at the end of June. She was a most wonderful pet that we rescued at age 8 and we still miss her. She left such a void in our house that we decided to adopt another and so we now have Charlie, a 3 year old female torti. I'll try to post a picture later - we think someone took all of the leftover paint colors and poured them over her! Her previous owners gave her up claiming allergies but then we found out later that it was just a handy excuse to get rid of her. At some point (and this makes me ill), they had all 4 of her paws declawed. Unbelievable. Anyway, we saw her and immediately decided we needed to have her with us. She's a wonderful cat, playful but very quiet. She is trying very hard to get our 10 year old Shih Tzu to play or cuddle but the dog is afraid of her. (Snickers used to hit her when she got in the way.) It will take time and we are hopeful that they will be come good friends.
I've missed seeing you and your babies!!!

Oh Snickersmom, sincere, deepest condolences on your loss, she was I am sure a true blessing for all the years you had her. No wonder you had to fill the void she left. Hopefully she is truly gratified to know you have adopted again. Charlie fell on her paws at yours. I suppose she is an indoor cat? Your Shi Tzu does well to acknowledge that the cat is boss, and she will probably get used to Charlie's energy and Charlie will gradually realise that the dear doggo is a senior citizen.

Pywacket and Kris are buddies. Grooming each other, chasing around the house. Spookie wants him dead. He is slowly learning to leave her alone. It takes time.

Snickersmom I am so very sorry for your loss. 19 1/2 years I cannot imagine what a void that leaves! So wonderful that you decided to bring Charlie into your hearts, I am sure she will settle in nicely. Sorry about the claw removal, though. I don't think I have ever heard of all four paws being done how awful for her. How on earth do you scratch an itch that way?

Snickersmom, Welcome back. Condolences for your loss. We lost ours in June as well and haven't gotten another one because we're planning to move. That's dragging on, though, so we may give in. I'm hoping to find a foster kitty. The last one at the shelter was "people aggressive" and on valium and prozac. Didn't like being medicated either. We decided to pass. I hope the dog decides Charlie is harmless and they become friends. Would love to see a photo.

DH once started an electric saw without warning while I was carrying a cat (my dear sweet gentle Nina, who would happily ride on my shoulder) across the garden - it didn't end well for me.
