Stomach pain post Diep flap

I’m nearly three years out from DIEP flap surgery. Since the very beginning I’ve had issues with extreme muscle cramping in one spot of my left lower abdomen. I even get hard charley horses there! Any ab workouts or heavy lifting triggers this. Has anyone else experienced this, and did you find any treatments or solutions?

  • Hi,

I had my surgery in 2021 and also get these horrific stomach spasms as if an alien is trying to exit my stomach. I have to be SUPER careful when doing any ab exercise. If I don't hold in the spasm it seems like it may tear through my body. The doctors have no idea what to do though one suspected since the surgery massively reduced my blood vessels, i could not be getting enough oxygen to the blood and recommended massively hydrating before working out. I've been trying this and being very careful and it seems to help though my workouts have lessened recently with a new stressful job.

We're so sorry to hear you're still experiencing pain like this, @lexaguayo! But we're glad that, with the help of your doctors, you've been able to find something that seems to be helping. It can take so long after a surgery like this for your body to finally settle into a comfortable normal, and we hope you continue to see improvements as you increase your workouts again.

I'm so sorry you both are experiencing this. I am 5 years out and have the weaknesses-- cramping (sometimes severe itching) whenever I use my stomach IF I can at all. I'm so defeated trying to do sit ups (can't) push ups (burning too tight) I'm doing pilates and I just got the ability to use my lower half for some moves-- but it seems like I had a TRAM instead of a DIEP cause my muscle strength is gone. I'm using the top part of my stomach for everything and it's super uncomfortable.
