Lumpectomy Surgery with SCOUT

First time posting and have had months of waiting for diagnosis due to long wait times for scheduling mammograms, ultrasound and finally a biopsy on May 6th. I have DCIS grade 3 and found out today that genetic testing for 70 mutations was negative. I have lumpectomy planned for August 7 and will have SCOUT procedure before surgery to help breast surgeon remove the cancerous tissue in my left breast. This is all new information and wondering if anyone else had this type of lumpectomy?

@dmataraz1 I'm not a candidate for lumpectomy, but I did have a scout procedure. The Savi Scout is a tiny little thing the radiologist implanted to help the surgeon pinpoint the positive lymph node, to make sure she gets it. At the time of surgery, she will wake up the scout with a wand, then she will be lead directly to the scout and the offending lymph node. the scout procedure is easy and there was really no healing time to it.

@dmataraz1 - Welcome to Breastcancer.org! We're sorry for your diagnosis and the time you had to wait. Besides this thread, you might post your question about the SCOUT procedure in the popular discussion called Lumpectomy Lounge....let's talk! The conversation has been quiet for a few months, but this is a good way to kick it up. You'll find lots of useful information and tips there too.

Hope this helps! Looking forward to hearing more from you soon.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have the SAVI SCOUT procedure scheduled for July 23 and my lumpectomy surgery on August 7th. I will be meeting with my breast surgeon on Monday to go over the surgery preparations.

@dmataraz1 I'm so sorry for the long wait times where you are. Here, they would schedule the scout procedure a few days out! Your clinics need to do better. Good luck!

@dmataraz1 I'm so sorry! The city needs to fix that! I'm happy you have a great breast surgeon though.

I had the Savi SCOUT clip placed with little to no pain on July 23. My partial mastectomy (lumpectomy) is planned for August 7th. I am so relieved to have all the pre-op testing done.

@dmataraz1 I'm glad this procedure is behind you, and I know you are too. Let us know how your surgery goes.

Hi dmataraz1 any update on your lumpectomy? I am guessing your SAVI scout is the wired one? Is there a wire protruding during surgery?

Mine is wireless. And they put it in me without my knowledge during core biopsy done last May. I ONLY found out about this SAVI scout IN me for months now on my last ultrasound like what the hell.

Now that I know though. I definitely will ask ALL about it on my next appointment. Not sure if my onco is the right person to ask. Or my plastic surgeon but have to ask about this. WOW.

My research seems not bad though. Since it ACTUALLY helps the surgeon take out the cancer. But from reading posts here. Most people KNOW about the SAVI scout being put in them - NOT ME!

And most people have the SAVI scout immediately before their surgery - NOT ME!. This thing is IN me for months now - without my knowledge! what the hell….

@pneuma I had the SAVI scout placed in my left breast two weeks before the surgery. It is similar in size compared to the small clip placed after my biopsy. It is wireless and both clips were removed by my breast surgeon during my lumpectomy. I am so glad I had the SAVI scout vs the wired version . My surgeon was able to remove the entire tumor and my margins were greater than 2 cm so I don’t need more surgery.

I signed a consent and there was a radiological specialist that placed my SAVI Scout. I had to have a mammogram afterwards to confirm it was placed correctly. I found the placement of the Scout less painful than the biopsy.

It sounds like you have a SAVI Scout already put in where your biopsy was done since you are already having surgery. This is a good thing since you don’t have to go back in a second time to have the Scout placed like I did. Your breast surgeon will activate it during your surgery so the tumor can be located.

Please provide update on your surgery. There is a lumpectomy and a radiation support groups I joined that have been extremely supportive for me.

Thanks for the update on your lumpectomy. I just had seen my onco today and told her I was surprised to know I have SAVI scout put in me during my core biopsy last May. I did ask her if during my lumpectomy if the other markers put in me will also be removed, she said NO. They will leave those markers in. Oh well. I also asked for her opinion on my breast surgeon plan to do my lumpectomy with a plastic surgeon because she wants to do a breast lift on my left breast at the same time. I told her I am a bit worried because on my diagnostic ultrasound, they found several cysts there. I was told they were more likely benign. She said it is ok for me to have breast lift on my left. OK……

She also said after my last chemo - round 6. Then I will only be on herceptin treatment. Oh I also ask her if it's ok that the SAVI scout has been inside me since May. She said it's fine. Well OK then! And yes I also had a mammo afterwards to confirm SAVI scout was placed correctly. But I thought at that time it was for my markers. LOL.
