Incision didn't heal after lumpectomy and reconstruction surgery

Hello, September 12, 2024 I had a lumpectomy with reconstruction on my right breast. Cancer was removed. Unfortunately I have to have a second surgery to close up the wound, the incision did not heal and has opened up where wound care, wound vac was not going to heal the incision. My care team assures me there is no infection. This is a very painful process changing the dressings twice a day has become increasingly painful and daunting. Can't wait for the surgery in hopes this will fix this issue so I can move onto next treatment plan which is 15 days of radiation. Anyone else experience this? Feel like this is rare and I'm alone on this. These past weeks, I have taken every step to heal from lumpectomy/reconstruction surgery. I don't smoke and I'm not diabetic. Increased protein in my diet, taking vitamin supplements, nothing is improving.

Hi @mmerlina71 , I'm sorry you have to have a second surgery to get your incision to heal. Hopefully that will work but if you are still having problems there are wound care surgeons for whom this is a specialty. For the most part they deal with diabetics and burn patients (how I met one) but treat anyone with a problem wound. There are special dressings that they use; these don't have to be changed for multiple days which helps the healing process. Hopefully vitamins A, B complex, C, D, E and K are among your supplements. If the repeat surgery doesn't fix the issue you might seek out one of these surgeons. All the best.

@maggie15 thank you for your information very helpful. 🙂 I will certainly look into that if this surgery doesn’t take. I’m taking all of those supplements along with zinc. Crossing fingers this second surgery will heal the wound.
