Radiation

Options

Hi. Just had lumpectomy for lower inner quad left invasive ductal ca ER, PR positive , Her 2 negative . Oncotype 22. I’m 53. Have negative sentinel nodes but positive intermammary on pet ct. They are recommending radiation and anti estrogen treatment. I am anxious about getting radiation as it can cause heart issues . I wish they could take out mammary node but so far two different opinions say no. Just wanted to see if any others have had a similar issue.

Hi @musiclover1, I’m sorry that radiation which you would rather not have is being recommended. I was in a similar situation and was told that radiation is much more effective than removing a node because small cancer cells could be close by outside the node and continue to spread but will be destroyed by rads.

To be honest I have had some bad side effects from the radiation (lungs, thyroid, esophagus, nerves in the radiation field) but I do not have metastatic bc. Make sure your RO is aware of any other medical conditions you might have. I ended up with radiation induced pulmonary fibrosis which the pulmonologist I was referred to said I was susceptible to given my history of esophagitis, upper GI bleed and Barrett’s esophagus. It’s not an easy decision when you’re between a rock and a hard place. Consult any other doctors you have to get their advice to help you make the decision. All the best.

I had radiation treatment done in the prone position. My tumor was upper left inner quadrant. Never hurts to ask. My sternum was lying on a metal plate, so I felt confident my heart did OK. That was in 2018 and no heart or lung issues. Best wishes to you.

  • Hi. Thank you so much. I will discuss with rad onc. They did say they do breath hold but I did not hear about the prone technique.
