Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and breast cancer

I am really scared that hormone therapy will make my heart condition worse. But if I don't take it the cancer might come back.

Hi @nannyogg, It can be really difficult to make decisions about HT when you have other competing health problems. Find out how much benefit the AIs or tamoxifen would provide to prevent possible cancer recurrence in your situation. If the chance of recurrence is relatively small, for example 6%, AIs would reduce it by 50% to a 3% chance of recurrence (a benefit of 3%.) If it were larger, say 20%, AIs would reduce it to 10% (a benefit of 10% which is greater.) Your MO should be able to give you a personal risk of recurrence number. Consult your cardiologist for his opinion on how HT would affect your heart. Then decide which course of action you would regret least if your suffered an adverse medical event.

Unfortunately HT does not guarantee that the cancer will never return and some people do not take HT and never have a recurrence. You have to decide how much and what type of risk you are more comfortable with. Good luck with your decision.

That makes a lot of sense. Thankyou for your reply. I will talk to my docs on Monday. Xx
