2nd time around - mammogram showed a mass

Hi all - I had DCIS in right breast in 2008, 2 lumpectomies and radiation and fine every since. I started having ultrasound along with mammogram a few years back upon recommendation of my surgeon. This year, I scheduled mammogram but could not get u/s till March. Mammogram usually shows architectural distortion, scar tissue, markers - this time they saw a "round mass" but coded the mammogram incomplete with no bIRAD score. I have to go for another mammogram and U/S this week. I also have basal skin cancer needing surgery in two weeks. I am totally freaking out. Anyone have a "round mass" that turned out to be …..what? Help!!

  • @traveler56 so hard to wait, but until you have the ultra sound you won’t know much more. They might do a biopsy as well to see what is going on with the mass. You never know, it could be something it could be nothing. I understand freaking out, that’s normal. One step at a time, though if you can. We are here for you. - Rhonda

  • Thank you Rhonda. I haven't thought about breast cancer coming back for a long time. I actually am scheduled to remove basal skin cancer from my nose on December 19, which might require a skin graft or slap due to the place on the nose. And my husband is on a cancer drug for lymphoma, but doing pretty well.

  • @traveler56 glad your husband is doing well. You’ve got a lot going on! Good luck with the Basel cell removal, I’ve had a few Mohs surgeries for Basel cells on my face over the years. My husband and I have a saying.. “ It’s always something” and then shrug lol…

  • The ultrasound came back with BIRAD 5, spiculated mass 1.2 X .2 X .7 cm oval so looking like I am probably headed to mastectomy on that side. Biopsy is the 17th and MOHS the 19th. I am mostly sad about telling my kids, my son just ended a 10 year relationship with a young woman who had IBC at 32, she is surviving but they became a toxic couple.

  • I’m so sorry , you’ll see what the biopsy says to know for sure. I always like having a best case, worst case, and probable scenario in my mind to ponder when I’m waiting for news and sharing updates. It leaves space for many outcomes and positive feelings too. I understand feeling sad sharing, When mine recurred I felt sad telling my son and my sister too. But I found it so much better not to keep it a secret, even though it’s hard to hear. Good luck with the biopsy and Mohs.

I start my next line of treatment next week, Carbo and taxotere. Fingers crossed it does the trick. Hugs.

  • I did tell my kids - boys in their 40s. They will do whatever I need and were very positive and hopeful. My youngest went out and bought me tickets to a Melissa Etheridge concert in April ! Woo Hoo!

Good luck with your treatment, rischaller. Thinking of you.
