1 Year appointment and stressed!!
I just had my 1 year appointment. Everything went good, however my Dr. recommended me getting an ultrasound. I have had two mammograms since my lumpectomy and the first one said post surgical changes and a seroma and the second one said no changes. However, I have a hard lump directly where the lumpectomy bed is. It is quite large and sometimes kinda painful if I push on it too much or lay on it just right. My dr. does not think it is cancer, she feels like it is either the seroma has calcified or it is scar tissue. She said it would be a good idea to see what the ultrasound can tell. She feels like it is not going to go away, so we need to have an idea of what it looks like, so that years down the road if it changes we have a baseline. Does anyone else have anything like this? I am pretty sure it happened after radiation. I had 5 accelerated partial breast treatments. Just kinda nervous about it!!
Also, does anyone obsesses over the blood work. Every little fluctuation I stress about it. Ugh!!

Anybody have anything like this? Trying to not go down the rabbit hole of stress and worry! Waiting on the ultrasound to get scheduled.
Thanks

Hi, yes I had something similar happen post treatment as well. I developed a seroma about 3 weeks post lumpectomy. When I had my post op visit with the surgeon, she decided not to drain it and said that it would be OK to go onto radiation. After radiation my imaging reports were getting Birads 3 on mammo, ultrasound and MRIs. It ultimately led to a biopsy in 2020 (I think). It was benign and diagnosed as fat necrosis and giant cell reaction. This breast tissue at my surgical site has settled down now however is still noted as post treatment changes on my last mammo and thankfully no more Birads 3. I have been getting Birads 2 last 2 years!
I certainly agree with your doc, to do an ultrasound as it is good to have a baseline and being early out there could still be changes that happen. I can also recommend wearing supportive bras with compression if needed -it helps the seroma fluid get absorbed back into your body. Also, if you work out best to keep that area from being stretched, pulled, etc. I sort of think that when I accidently dropped a small weight on my boob it didn't help.
Best wishes to you for good results. I hope my little story lets you know that this does happen, and although it's stressful, it's much better than the alternative. Hang in there!
