Cancer (and other medical conditions) research halted
I signed on today to see if this had already been posted by the BCO Mods. Nope, not a word about all cancer research meetings being halted. Here's a link to the article.

Its simply unbelievable!

craziness. The article states the pause effective till Feb 1 covers panels that look at “research-grant reviews, travel and trainings for scientists inside and outside the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world’s largest public biomedical funder” . I’m on Bluesky and there are a lot of scientists posting there, hopefully strong pushback since Congress authorizes the funding not the president.

Yes, and travel?! So they can't go to AACR & ASCO meetings? Maybe we don't need meetings, if we aren't going to be funding research?! Well, the senate is nearly all-male, so I'd guess prostate cancer and heart research will get the green light…

good news, the order to pause (cancel) funding etc… has been rescinded!

I hope that's the case, but the idiot spokesperson said it was just the memo rescinded, not the policy change. Ye gods. And other sources I follow or am in touch with are indicating it hasn't changed. I think everyone has to check with their doctors and labs and treatment centers before assuming anything one way or another for now. What a mess.

you are right .. I was so hopeful. But we are living through pure insanity in government right now, I can hardly keep up with bombardment of it all. Hopefully rational voices will fight back and straighten out what has been damaged. Day at a time…

Hi all,
BCO is working very hard on coverage for all the things that may be affecting you, your treatment, and beyond. We'll have some important reporting published for you next week.
In the meantime, this is a newer news story on the current situation:
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/29/health/nih-trials-research.html
We'll let you know as soon as we have more to share. We know this is a very disconcerting time and we want to make sure the info we share, as always, is accurate.

Rhonda and Alice - I think a judge or two have put temporary restraining orders on the whole thing, so for now at least, things should still be as before. Not 100% certain of all this of course; like everything right now, there's just so much out there that conflicts, it's hard to know for sure.

Thank you mods.. for the new article. And look forward to more.
And @threetree, it’s good to see the organizing and legal steps being taken to ensure the illegality of these directives are corrected and clarified. Time will only tell what the ramifications will be of this disorder in governance on our collective, and individual lives. I am heartened though by the voices of reason and independent journalists and public figures who are the beginnings of rational collective dissent and using the courts to ensure right governance, as best as we can. My mother used to say ..we are living through interesting times.. isn’t that a fact! Happy Saturday all.

Also, in light of these new tariffs, thought I'd better check my meds... and of course none of them are manufactured in the US.
Those of us on cancer medications, particularly those of us who are stage 4, I seriously hope we aren't going to have to pay 25% more just to stay alive.

@sf-cakes It's a horrible thought that too many people have to face now. come from? Will they be affected by the senseless tariff situation?
I'm supposed to schedule a fairly major surgery, but with how quickly bad things are happening, I don't know if I'll still have my Medicare Advantage plan in a month or so, or if hospital workers will be disappearing, or what will be going on in the medical world. I'm so angry, I'll probably have a stroke by then anyway.
