Hip Pain
Hello, I just had my breast reconstruction last Feb and Sept 2024. A Latimus Dorsal. Eight years after my mastectomy and chemo. Just before my surgery last Sept. I suddenly hurt my hip/groin area at the gym, so I thought, it was that. My x-ray does look like osteoarthritis there. It wasn't even gradual, it was a sudden pain. I've had cortisone shots, and even hylauronic acid injected in the hip, which I think made it worse. The whole thigh aches when I walk on it and when I go to sit down. I'm going for hip replacement. I'm worried though, as it's so bad, the pain, I am in chronic pain. Nothing helps to alleviate this. Dry needling but not for long. I'm worried this may be metastasis and not osteoarthritis. Im cringing in pain at work, trying to cover up the excruciating pain. The hip is really stiff, it became like that after the hylauronic acid injection. I'm limping etc. I'm contemplating on going to the ER tmrw to get this checked for bone cancer. Any comments on this?

Hi @drained6513, I'm sorry you are suffering from hip pain. A sudden injury at the gym and an x-ray showing osteoarthritis seems to have led to a diagnosis of needing a hip replacement. There are other reasons for hip pain including tendinopathy, cartilage tears, bursitis and arthritis in other joints like the sacroiliac and pubic symphisis. I ended up having an MRI when an x-ray showed only mild hip arthritis. I have all kinds of tendon and muscle injuries as well as worse arthritis in nearby joints. A bone tumor which can't be biopsied also showed up but is under surveillance and staying the same size.
Injections into the hip can unintentionally hit nerves, muscles and tendons. I have had helpful cortisone shots but they were done under ultrasound guidance to make sure that didn't happen. I'd recommend consulting your orthopedic surgeon again to make sure that hip arthritis is the source of the pain and a hip replacement is the solution. All the best.
