DCIS new

I was diagnosed with left breast DCIS high grade ER-PR + on 1/24/25. During surgical oncology appointment on 2/12/25 was recommended R mastectomy with SNBL. I have appointment with Plastics coming up to discuss options for recon. However I am leaning towards AFC at this time.
My other (right) breast is extremely dense and mammogram report is normal. MRI was not advised by surgeon.Plan is for a single left mastectomy with yearly monitoring of right breast if it is pure Dcis. I am concerned if mammogram alone can discern any early changes and while planning SMx should the other breast be evaluated preop?

Hi @suki25, I'm sorry that your diagnosis brought you here. I sounds like the DCIS was first found on a mammogram. An MRI of the other breast was probably not advised since that mammogram was clear. The trouble with having an MRI now is that it won't show something that might develop years down the road.
If you are leaning toward AFC and would like symmetry as the result of the surgery you could have a DMx done for that reason. Some people prefer that for aesthetic reasons or to eliminate the anxiety of yearly scans.
It's not an easy decision to make but you have to go with what feels right for you. I hope you have a successful surgery whatever you decide. All the best.
