+I have had breast cancer three times in the past 22 years. I have had both my breasts removed -and see my MO and BS twice a year at alternating times so I see one or the other every three months. I will see my BS next week.

In Aug of 2024 my CA score was 40. I wasn't concerned and assumed it was my normal. In February it was 59.3. My MO and I agreed to retest in three months to see if it continued to rise. Last week it was 52.2.

My question is, am I correct to assume whatever is causing the fluctuations in my scores is likely benign? I assume if it was from cancer it would have gone up over the 59.3 score.

My concern is because I would like to only have blood work that is absolutely necessary because my veins are so bad and I can only have blood taken from my right arm because my left arm has severe lymphedema in it.

I fully expect that someday I will be stage IV but don't think I am now?

Hi Mavericksmom. I think we were going through treatment at the same time in 2022. My MO doesn't do tumor marker tests as she thinks they are too inaccurate; I hope she is correct and your number is due to inflammation or something else benign. There aren't as many people active on this forum as there used to be, so I hope that someone who has experience with this comes along soon for you. So sorry you are having to deal with this!

@mavericksmom I would say tumor marker bloodwork is unnecessary since it appears that you do not have metastatic disease. As your own experience has shown, results can fluctuate.

I have serious lymphedema in one arm also. A breast specialist at UW-Madison was able to order a port placement. My previous doctor, at a different facility, would not agree to my having one!

Mavericksmom - I do not have any advice, however, I wanted to pop in and say hello. I’m so sorry to hear that you are once again dealing with the stress of uncertainty. Has your doctor offered any comments on the fluctuating CA27-29? Or will this be a topic of discussion with your BS next week?

    Take care.
