Post biopsy hematoma delaying surgery

I am newly diagnosed in May 2025 with preliminary stage 1 IDC. I developed a large hematoma post biopsy and it’s been 6 weeks and the hematoma is still large 3 to 4 cm with bruising still evolving. My surgeon advised to wait another month for the hematoma to resolve more to have the lumpectomy and SNLB. It will then be 9 to 10 weeks post biopsy. Is this too long to wait for surgery? It is psychologically difficult to wait this long. What is the possibility that the cancer might spread to lymph nodes. Please share your experience.

Generally it is recommended to have surgery within 90 days of biopsy. It is often done sooner but sometimes circumstances like your hematoma delay things. I had to wait 8 weeks for a jawbone infection being treated by IV antibiotics through a picc line to clear up. Surgeons have experience assessing situations that could lead to complications. It is unlikely that cancer would spread to the lymph nodes in that time frame. I sympathize with your worry but avoiding infection or healing problems is worth the wait. I hope your hematoma improves soon.

Thank you maggie15 for sharing your experience. I did not know about the recommendation to have surgery within 90 days of biopsy. This information is reassuring!
