Just diagnosed

Hi - I have been looking at various posts on this site all of last week, and found all the posts to be so encouraging and helpful. Earlier today, I was diagnosed with "intermediate to high grade ductal carcinoma in situ with micro calcifications" of the left breast. I ran this by AI, and it sounds like the cancer has not spread, but the cells are growing quickly(?) What are your thoughts? Should I insist on seeing a "surgeon" right away? I ask because none of the ones I want to see are available until 2026 because of the holidays. Do I have time to wait, or just see the "next available" surgeon? Thank you so much.

    Hi @channel1922

Sorry you have had to join us, but happy that you have found us!

From what you posted, it sounds like you have what is commonly phrased DCIS, which is actually a Stage 0 Breast Cancer-or some say pre-cancerous. It does need to be treated as it often develops into invasive cancer. Because it say intermediate to high grade, I believe you are correct in that the cells are growing more quickly than average. However, 'quickly' is a pretty relative term. Breast Cancer does tend to be pretty slow-growing generally. You should be fine seeing the surgeon in 2026 IMO. It is important to have a good relationship and confidence in your surgeon. I would wait and see the one you want to see. Get the appointment made and then start the waiting game.

DCIS generally has a really good outcome. So, try and take a deep breath and relax and enjoy the holidays however you plan to do so.

We are here to help you on this journey.

    Take Care.
