Cording/Mondors

Hi All. New here and hoping someone can see this and talk me off the ledge. I have been having pain in my ribs. At first I thought it was a broken rib again (had it 6 months ago post radiation for no reason). But the I saw the cord and now two cords from my breast to rib.
I am freaked out because my surgery was over a year ago now and wondering why I am getting cording so late in the game? Can this signify recurrence of some kind or can it be dangerous in any way?
Thanks!

Hi @izzy23p, I have never had to deal with cording but many SEs can show up a year or later after surgery/radiation. Cording is caused by scar tissue and inflammation, not a recurrence. Contact your surgeon or RO for a referral to a specialist physical therapist who can help since it gets worse if not treated. I hope you can get some relief.

  • Cording is more annoying than most people know. PT for cording is valuable but also expensive—and unfortunately, it does not always yield discernible improvement. Cording is a hidden gotcha. It can be tough when other BC survivors don’t understand cording because they’re never experienced it and may have never even heard of it.
Best wishes to you. I hope you can achieve improvement!!

@izzy23p I had something similar, very painful. Turns out to be superficial blood clot (clinical suspicion and diagnosis) that definitely looked like a couple of cords. I treated it with aspirin 1 tablet a day for 1 week and it went away! I also applied heat as that helped make me comfortable. Prior to that treatment I attempted a lot of physical therapy as I thought it was cording but that didn't make it go away.
