Breast reduction

Hello. I had breast cancer treatment (lumpectomy, Chemo and radiotherapy) 20 years ago.

For 19 years I have been very unhappy. I have one breast that is significantly larger than the other one. It is very depressing! I have brought special bras, padding, fillets etc but nothing works.

Does anyone know if the NHS would perform a breast reduction on the larger breast to bring them to the same size (or at least nearly).

Thank you in advance.

Hi @laine61, and welcome to Breastcancer.org!

It’s completely understandable that this has been so difficult to live with for so long. We Moderators, don’t have specific information on whether the NHS would cover this type of surgery, but we hope other members may be able to share their experiences. You might also want to ask Sylvia in the discussion Calling all triple negative breast cancer patients in the UK—she and others there may have helpful insight about accessing care through the NHS.

We’re really glad you reached out, and hope you’re able to get some helpful guidance here.

    Warmly,

Hi laine61, After my breast cancer and reconstruction I was left with 2 different size and shaped breast. It has been frustrating and makes wearing bras very difficult. I did have a reduction on the unaffected breast at time of reconstruction. It did not turn out symmetrical. The thing to do is make an appointment and get your referral. Ask your question to see if it could be covered. I hope they will :). I'm heading back to the plastic surgeon to see what can be done with mine. It has been 16 years and the asymmetry is worsening. I wish you the best.

Thank you so much for your message and info. I hope you have luck with your plastic surgery. It is absolutely awful when your bra doesn't even sit right. You can't even wear a 'V' neck top.
