Help with Helping Mom

Hi all,

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer ER+90%, PR_70% HER-2 2+ on IHC and FISH negative in 2011. Remission in 2012; mets in her hip in 2020. She was on Ibrance for five years, and then they found fluid in her lung a few months ago.

They found it after a fall where she broke her hand and bruised her leg, so they started on fulvestrant with a thought of Ribociclib if her KPS improved.

The fluid keeps returning, and she's looking to meet with her oncologist this week. It's only in her right lung, but they have her on oxygen at the moment. For anyone on this journey, any advice about what I should be asking the oncologist or what I should be doing would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @classiccatch, I'm sorry your mom has breathing issues now. Ask your oncologist about a chest CT with contrast to see what is going on in her lungs. If she has pleural effusion it can be drained periodically by thoracentesis done by a medical professional or if she is capable a pleurx drain can be put in and emptied periodically at home. That might be enough to get her off oxygen which made me feel like a dog tied up in the yard. The CT would also show if there were mets or lung cancer which would influence treatment decisions.

I can't answer questions about what meds she might be able to tolerate but somebody else might chime in. I hope your mom's appointment goes well. All the best.
