Seeking advice on post-treatment breast reduction surgery
Hi! I had a lumpectomy on my right breast 19 years ago. For about 10 years, the asymmetry wasn't that significant. Then, about 8 or 9 years ago, I noticed the left breast growing. Not sure if the right breast also got smaller. The extra tissue finally showed up on a mammogram, they did a biopsy and it was benign. But now my asymmetry is significant. I am a petite person so not a lot of room on my frame to hide a disproportionately large breast. I would say my right breast is a small A and my left breast is a large C. I am 55 years old now, so my left breast has increased in density and sits lower, while my right breast hasn't change (or has gotten smaller?!). So I saw a plastic surgeon. Initially Kaiser denied the request for surgery, I appealed and won, and they have approved a breast reduction on one side. Now I have to make a decision about whether to have this surgery. Part of me wants it as I have struggled for about 8 years finding clothes that hide my asymmetry and feeling like so many clothing options are not available to me. Another part of me is worried and feels like I shouldn't take the risk of an unnecessary surgery. My surgery authorization is only good for 6 months. This has been bothering me for 8 years. So now is the time to decide. I didn't know who to turn to to help me decide. I would be grateful for any and all insights, similar experiences, and advice. Thank you!

I had a reduction of the 'good' breast for symmetry with my 1st dx reconstruction. For me, it was worth it to make them 'equal'. The bonus is that it gives you a lift, since as we age they do tend to sag.
With my 2nd dx, I had 2 surgeries to do fat transfer after my lat flap, to build up the breast.
I totally 'get' how your are feeling. With every surgery that i have done, you wonder if you should be doing it since it is cosmetic. However, I think it also impacts your mental health. I'm glad they approved your surgery for you. You would never have needed it had you not been dxd and treated for breast cancer.
It sounds to me like you really have already made your decision and you just want someone to tell you that you are not crazy to want to do it. I can tell you that you are not crazy and it is perfectly ok to want to feel more 'normal'.
It's got to be your decision, but I would say just follow your gut. Once you make the decision, it's right for you.
Take Care.
