I switched from synthroid to armour thyroid because its a more natural alternative. My endo also said keeping weight off had better success with AT.

But why is synthorid bad if you have or had BC? I take levothyroxine (I think that's the spelling) which I believe is a generic form of synthroid.

i haven't heard that it is bad - but it a - um trying to think of the word - man made? synthetic? drug where armour thyroid is more natural - my endo's only reason for the change is that it helped guard against weight gain. his words...

Lilah: From what I have heard, Armour or natural thyroid is a more balanced approach so it gets better results, where the synthetic completely eliminates one of the important links to having a healthy thyroid. I am no expert and it's been awhile but Armour addresses it all. It does take a couple of months to work because it's natural, but I think that it works better. I think there are three important factors included in the Armour and the Synthroid only adresses two of these.

Hi Almagetty: Sorry I took so long to answer you. I was on a cruise--to celebrate the end of my surgeries, infections, etc. It was a wonderful cruise and I needed the break. Anyway, yes, I can usually match the graft with tattooing--BUT it will look more natural without the areola done, just the nipples. So if you can.. Good luck. JUDY

Thanks Claire and MBJ - I will ask my doctor about that.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience with the Komen Race for the Cure, I was a team Captain for my place of employment and our Wichita chapter broke the record for the number of particpants! We had over 10,000 participants yesterday!! Val you shared with me that it is an awesome experience, the survivor walk brought me to tears. So many survivors! Here is a picture of my brother and I he also ran and my husband and 2 son's were there as well. Hugs to you all

Hi Lilah -- Sorry.... I was out sailing yesterday and participated in a mermaid regatta.... fun times. hmmm, did I mention margaritas were involved! Thanks to Claire & MBJ for filling in and yes, you are both right.
In addition, Synthroid/ levothyroxine, is a T4-only med. I don't convert my T4 to T3 so need a natural thyroid hormone that has both T3 & T4 in it. Have felt tremendously better since switching with the exceptions of the crashes I have every now and then.
Check out this thyroid website for more details: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=35794027415&v=info
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CoalitionForDesiccatedThyroid/ - This Yahoo Group is great.... very knowledgeable people. check it out if you are thinking about switching.
I think the motivating factor for switching was the possible osteoporosis and taking high levels of Synthroid will increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Anna -- That sounds like it was a great experience for you .... congrats on your success. Thanks for supporting the cause! Pam

Claire - Lucky you found an endo who will prescribe Armour. In my town, there is only 1 doc and you have to ask for it. p

http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/index.html - here is another one of my favorite links.... a lot of good info related to breast cancer and natural choices including info on iodine as a supplement .... you can order it from this site too.0

vanderlady: That's my favorite site! I ws going to mention it, but I couldn't remember if it had much on the thyroid, except for the iodine protocol, which is something I have been doing since 5/09. Great info on there!!! There are Dr. recommendations for your area if your regular dr will only prescribe Synthroid.

Seems like there are alot of people with Tyroid issues. I had mine totally removed in January and was put on Sythroid 150. Should I be asking to be switched to Armour? I have actually never heard of it. I have an appointment with my Endo next month..

No, honey, I waited 6 weeks after chemo, but since I looked like crap, horrible grey hair, I used Roux Fanciful rinses and mousse.
This stuff, tho it has been around since the dinosaurs is amazing!! It does disguise grey, doesn't last tho. It won't hurt you as it shampoos right out. A very good, if temporary fix.
Just google it, it works great! I used "frivolous fawn" which is a very pretty red gold. If one can believe this, I got plenty of compliements on my hair color while using it.
But you can bet your bottom dollar, 6 weeks after chemo, when they said I could, I dyed the cra** out of my hair!!
Have fun!
Annie

I had no idea you were that close to Wichita. Another sister here lives there and did the race too.... so this year... as I could not do the Kansas City race... I sent my money to YOUR race and got my two tee's from YOUR race.... HOW IRONIC!

Annie, too funny. I remember my mom using Fanciful Rinse with each shampoo. I swear her color was some kind of fawn, too, maybe Fabulous Fawn. Worked for her!

Hi all!
I haven't been posting because I had my exchange on the 15th and it did NOT go well. I have been so unhappy and so depressed I literally couldn't get myselft out of bed and have been round the clock on demerol.
My right mx side looks great! couldn't be happier. But apparently my PS had trouble getting the left to match the right. The game plan was that he was going to put 300 ccs to give me a little boost on the left (i have 750 on the right and would say its perfect in comparision to what God gave me) Well I woke from surgery to find he put 500 on the left!!! I was astounded he put almost double to what we agreed. It is so big its ridiculous. everyone kept telling me it was swelling and it would take months to go down. Well Wednesday I had the bandages removed and discovered when i got home that i have a bulge under my incision (which was underneath the breastline) So when I called the doctor to see if this was normal he say Oh i had to move your natural breast crease because the implant was so large. Ok well I am not surgeon but now my left breast sits an inch lower than the right. He told me to please be patient let the swelling go down. I tried I really did but I just felt like something was very wrong. I went to my BS today and honestly I couldn't stop crying. I felt so embarassed to take my clothes off. As soon and my BS saw it he said it was a bad result and very uneven. So he and I together contacted my PS and I am meeting PS tomorrow. All docs agree I need to go back in the OR pronto to fix it before my natural breastline gets too stretched out. I am so upset. I just can't believe I'm headed back in to surgery. I am in so much pain, my skin feels like its on fire its so strectched, I am miserable.
I wondered if it wouldnt be easier for me to have saline put on the left side to make it easier to fill and match the mx side which really is perfect. Does anyone out there have saline on one side silicone on the other? I have a lot of dense breast tissue on the left so I am thinking it might not feel so different. Can anyone help me? I am so upset I just want to go in the PS tomorrow with some ideas of how to fix this to get the best results. Has anyone had a revision? How long after the first surgery do you think I have to wait. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. I've been a mess. Even my BS said "I don't know what he was thinking" nice.
Please help!
Diane

Judy, glad you had the "Wonderful Cruise"! You certainly have been through a lot. So glad you have all this wonderful stuff going on now:)
Maybe I will deserve a cruise too.
Today, I had my 8th breast surgery in 17 months...whew...I sure hope I am finished except for my dream trip to see you for 3 D Tats!
My PS DID think that a lift was a good idea for symetry so that my bra will stop pulling up more on the one side causing constant soreness and pulling down more on my shoulder on that side.
Hopefully, this is the end of surgeries until these implants wear out.
Final Report: 11 surgeries in 18 months ...8 Breast...Davinci Robot Hysty/Ooph...2 tooth extractions
Just in case anyone else suffers with repeated infections from no apparent cause----I am not normally prone to infections...So---- After finally culturing a breast infection and learning that it was a common mouth bacteria, I had a continually bothersome root canal tooth extracted and had no further infections. The back crowned tooth next to that was slightly uncomfortable and sensitive for several months so I had it extracted two weeks ago. The root canal tooth had been crowned for about a year and then a cronic problem for 3 years after the root canal and anpicoectomy....then I was diagnosed with BC. So, I figured that having been willing to lop off a perfectly good breast prophylactically...trying to avoid another 3 yr battle with a tooth by extracting it paled in comparison to removing a breast. I will say, however, that my experience has been that when you lop off a perfectly good breast...it won't be happy about it!!! The prophylactic side got me back big time with infections and a surgery to "release" it down to allow more fills only to be accidentally punctured during a fill by the PA.
All my best to all of you on the list above! It is so great to see so many with FINAL surgeries:)

Diane -- I second what Estepp said. Send a PM to Whippetmom (aka Deborah) and/or go to a thread called Breast Implant Sizing 101.
Are you a unilateral who augmented her natural side? If so, you ABSOLUTELY CAN put a saline implant in your natural breast. In fact, a number of gals here have done just that using a kind of saline implant in their remaining breast that has a port that allows adjustment of that side to match the MX side. I've seen some really terrific results and there is NO reason you can't have a really good match with an augmentation of one side to match an MX side. How wonderful that the MX side is looking so good! Anyway, I am certain that Deborah (Whippetmom) can help you. Please do PM her!

Yes Lilah i an a uni augmenting my natural breast...slightly...not 500ccs worth. UGH.
Thanks for your replies. I will wait to see what Deborah says.

DiDel: I am so angry for you!!!! I wouldn't let that PS touch me ever again, I would go find someone better to fix it, and I would do it pronto. PM Debroah (whippetmom) and maybe she can recommend someone. That PS should lose his license. I am so so sorry you are in pain and are going through this but it can be fixed. Hugs!!
