Rebecca--so sorry to hear about what's going on with you!! I will be praying God comforts and heals you. Praying the antibiotics do their job. There will be another run! Hang in there and get well!

Rebecca: Hope those antibiotics are working and you can go home!
Claire: Such great news!!! What a relief. What is the name of your new Dr?

Rebecca,
So sorry to hear about your infection. Three weeks after my mastectomy, I developed a bad staph infection and was in the hospital for 5 days on IV antiobiotics - and then I had to continue the IV antiobiotics at home, but it was too difficult so they switched me to oral antibiotics for the last 5 days of treatment. I was afraid they were going to have to remove my TEs at the time - luckily they didn't. I understand what you are going through. Hopefully, the antibiotics are working and you have started feeling better. How are you feeling? I'm having my exchange surgery this Wednesday (11/10) and am very nervous about getting another infection. Hopefully, things will go smoother this time. My prayers are with you for a speedy and full recovery.

Gunner here:
I am having my exchange in 5 days 11-12, I am a neurotic mess. I am also having a lift on the other side. I had a skin sparing mastect in June and have TE in now. I am afraid, think I am going to die and am yelling at my family 24/7. Is this normal, what is wrong with me. I should be happy. I hayed the anesthsia with my mastectomy. My husband says I am Mrs Doom when they wheeled me off during my mastectomy. I need some advice. I just got my daughters report card, her first one as a freshman, 1 f in clay, how do u get a F in clay. Please help. Elizabeth

You sound pretty normal to me. That's why we come here - to let off some steam. After my botched up reconstruction, I did see a counselor. She helped me put things in perspective. Maybe this could help? After going through the mastectomy, you will find that this surgery is much easier. Think of it - by the new year, you will be on your way to normal again. Get through these next few days - put yourself first and deal with your daughter on the 13th

I guess it depends what your daughter made with the clay! (or maybe you don't want to know) Gunner, I think just about all of us have been a mess before surgery. Call your doctor tomorrow and see if you can get some valium or anti anxiety med, it helps. Good luck to you on Friday, switching out of the TE is a huge improvement.

gunner so sorry to hear you're having a rough time!! How did you handle your anesthesia when you had your mast? Did you have trouble with it? It's a much shorter surgery than the mastectomy. Only about 2 hours. And much less invasive, although you might have a lot more bruising. I will say this, you will not look "even" at first. DO NOT FREAK OUT!! So much changes over several months time. Your pecs will be tight and it takes time for them to relax and stretch. Things can always be addressed down the road if need be. Have you called your dr. to see if he/she can give you something for your nerves? Hang in there! I'm praying for you right now! And I know it's not funny to you, but I had to laugh about your daughter.
I've never heard of anyone getting an F in clay, either. She's got some 'splainin' to do..... At least it can't get any worse. :-/Lisa--praying your surgery goes well, too. At least it's no where near as long and invasive as the mast. and TE's. Can they give you an antibiotic a couple days before surgery? Seems to me if someone has had problems in the past, they would try to build you up before hand. I know I had an antibiotic I had to take for a week after coming home from the hospital. Praying things go better for you this time around.
So excitied for you both, yippee squishee time!! It'll feel so good! Just remember they take a while to settle down!!! All the best to you both.

Good morning ladies and Thank you soooooo much for all of the prayers. I am happy to report as of the way things look right now I will not loose the implant. Yesterday the doctor was already planning to open me up on Monday. The reddened area had tripled is size. Then last night when she came to see me the areas was almost gone. " That girls is the power of prayer". I am home after great protest by my doctors but I am on IV antibiotics for 5 more days. I told my doctors I would do much better in my own home and not in the hospital so I was discharged this morning at 830 when she came to round. I made sure the nurses had my paperwork ready they just need to arrange the home health but they can do that later today.
I have a weird sensation on my left breast the one that has the infection. I can feel where my nipple should be. They keep the hospital so cold and I noticed that when I sneeze or if I am cold I feel the sensation of my nipple. I know that sounds weird. Has anyone else had this happen?
Brenda thank you for dedicating the walk to me.
Gunner I understand how you feel and you sound normal to me. Hang in there you will be fine.
Hugs to all and Thank you all again,
Rebecca

Rebecca -- hope you are doing better and the antibiotics are working to rid your body of that infection.
Everyone who gets nervous before surgery -- you are SO normal. I was a complete nervous mess before every one of my surgeries. It didn't help this time when the hospital admitting office called the day before to inquire if I had a living will or advance directive!!!
My incision continues to bleed slowly, but the blood makes its way through the bandages and gauze pads, so I've been pinning a clean wash cloth inside my sports bra (on top of the bandages) to catch the extra in between changes. It's a messy deal, but guess it won't go on forever. Anybody remember having this problem? It's a first for me after 6 surgeries.
Have a wonderful day.

Dee - Thanks for your message and prayers. I asked my doctor about going on an antibiotic ahead of time. She said that they give me IV antibiotics right before the surgery and then I will be on prophylactic antibiotics for two weeks following the surgery. This is what they did last time and it didn't seem to help. Hopefully, I'll have better luck this time (I think they're going to put me on a stronger antibiotic following surgery). My father's a doctor (internal medicine) and he spoke with the infectious disease specialist he most respects. That doctor had the same recommendation as my PS. Seems they should do more, but I guess there's only so much they can do to prevent infection. I don't think I mentioned it in my last post, but in addition to getting an infection after my BMX with TEs, I also got an infection after my last lumpectomy (I had three of them). So, my track record's not great in terms of infection - I've developed staph after 50% of my four surgeries in the last six months - and I'm at one of the top hospitals in NYC.
Gunner - As you can tell, I'm also nervous about my upcoming exchange surgery (mine's two days before yours). Hoping and praying both our surgeries go really well. I also would echo other's recommendations to ask your doctor for some anti-anxiety meds - just don't take them too close to the surgery and make sure to tell your anesthesiologist the last time you took one.
Good luck to Almagetty and others not listed above who are also having surgery this week.

gunner: If it's any consolation, I work in an artistic field but I can't do anything with clay except make a mess!! I am lucky if I can get an ashtray out of it. Your daughter is probably responding to your surgeries, procedures and also your fears and stress. I would let her teachers know what you are going through in private so that maybe they can take a bit extra time and care with her. It's scary for children to have their parents go through this! And you are normal! I was freaking out before my surgery. I bought a "prepare for surgery, heal faster" CD by Peggy Huddleston. It put me in a deep meditation using visualization. Now this sort of thing doesn't usually do anything for me, however, the night before my MX and my Exchange, I listened to it in bed over and over with headphones on and it really helped. Good luck with your exchange--you are going to be just fine!

Rebecca - so glad you are hopefully on your way to recovery!!
Gunner - I think everyone gets nervous nervous before surgery. I have some xanax reserved for that. My doctor understands and lets me take one in the morning before surgery as I get so anxious. You will be ok. Good luck.

Gunner here, thank you for all your replies i took an ativan and am having a glass wine.Did you use Hiberclens to wash area before surgery. Did they give u any meds while waiting in transition. I am a RN so I know too much and think the worseI love taking care of patients but the other way a nightmare. What about drains. Will I be in pain when I wake up and be on morphine. I do not know what to ask for .I am staying the night - a 4 hr drive to hosp. Do u think I should bring my 15 yr old daughter who is slunking clay or will watching me be forever horrible. What is proper etiquette.. I cant leaver her alone the dogswill eat my oriental rug fringe and use the parlor as a party den. I am glad it is normal to freak out cause i was ready for the loony bin. Watched a 2 hr special on 911 that put me in place. Sat in my recliner. Will I be sleeping in the recliner after surgery or bed after mastectomy it was a date with the recliner. Thanks for all your caring remarks request more answers to these questions. Peace Elizabeth

Gunner - Some PS's use drains for the exchange some don't. Call his office and ask. My PS told me he didn't normally use drains but I had to give him some leeway if he thought I needed it. I didn't. But some do.
Re the pain - are you in pain now? I had terrible pain with my TE's and was so looking forward to the pain being gone when I woke up in recovery. I cried when I woke up b/c the pain was still there. It IS getting better. Some women have no pain, just extreme relief once the exchange takes place. I think I only took 2 percocet after my exchange. It is a piece of cake compared to the masectomy and TE placement. I slept in a normal bed with a wedge pillow after my DMX and did the same with my exchange surgery. Hang in there!
Peace to you!

gunner: You need to get the anesthesiologist on board with your issues....let him/her know about your complications and ask what they can do to fix this. If you tend to wake up in pain, let them know so that they can medicate you properly. The exchange, for the mass majority of us, is a cake walk in comparison to the MX. But most of us veterans do remember being more emotional and had more impressions of true DREAD before the exchange than we did before the MX. Only rarely do women need drains with the exchange, which is to state that a few needed them, but most of us did not. Your daughter will not be grossed out.
I have to say you have kept your sense of humor because reading about your dogs tearing up the house was pretty amusing. I had to go through and find your previous post though, because I could not fathom at all what you meant when you said your daughter was "slunking clay." I thought maybe she was heaving clay for a job or something. These little typos can get us into trouble....

You will do FINE! Just hang in there!!!!
ADNERB: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU DID FOR OUR REBECCA!

I have been lurking on this thread now and then - just wanted to say to Rebecca that I am SO glad you are feeling better. Healing thoughts to you!!
And Brenda, what you did for Rebecca today was wonderful. That picture brought tears to my eyes. There are so many supporting sisters in here, it is truly amazing.

Maria_8 I can not tell you how I felt when I read the post from Brenda. I have not felt that special in a long time. I think I am so lucky to have found this site.
I am feeling much better.
The feeling is still there in the left breast it makes me feel like there is hope. Has anyone else felt this before?
Rebecca

Great news that you are able to continue your recovery at home, Rebecca!!
I have a question... Just a little while ago I was changing my bandages and noticed that the steri-strip was loose, so I peeled it back just far enough to look for the source of the bleeding and saw at least a quarter inch gap in the middle of my incision where there are no stitches. It's just gaping open and bleeding. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Guess I'll put on lots of pads, etc, and call the PS again in the morning. This really sucks!

I would pad it and make sure to keep the area clean. Make sure you are washing your hands every time you care for the area. That will help prevent further infection.

Rebecca -- it was so sweet of you to answer my post with all the other issues you are facing. I really appreciate it. I'm being as careful as possible and hoping this will be an easy fix. Thanks so much again. You hurry up and get well, sweet lady. --bonnie

Ladies -- I was away for the weekend and Oh My 3 pages of posts! So forgive me if I miss someone.
Rebecca -- glad you are on the mend! Oh and that cold nipple feeling... I have heard others speak of this. It's kinda like a phantom limb syndrome. So glad you have more feeling though!
Brenda -- you are such an angel... love what you did for Rebecca on your walk.
Gunner -- you already had great advice; I must say I was numb when I had the MX and far more nervous about the exchange/lift/reduction I had (I'm a uni); I think the exchange is more nerve-wracking because we focus on looking good (rather than on ridding our bodies of cancer).
Kew -- woo hoo on the revision surgery!
Bonnie -- the gap could be from a stitch coming loose. (Or, if you had glue instead of stitches, well then it's just needing to be tended to). Good plan to call the doctor tomorrow and yeah, what Rebecca said until then
How are you feeling otherwise?Claire -- waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! I am so proud right now and of course delighted for you

gunner- I was such a nervous wreck before exchange my PS offered Valium to take on the way to the hospital the morning of the surgery. Have to say- it did help! My PS had me start antibiotics as soon as I got home. (Try to get any of your prescriptions ahead of time at your pre-op appointment- one less stop on the way home.) I wouldn't worry about the pain too much. Most women have very little pain after exchange. Nothing like MX! Hang in there. Try to stay busy and keep your mind off things as much as possible. (I know- easier said than done!) Good luck!0
