hi ladies,
my exchange is tomorrow! any advice? am i going to wake up in intense pain as i did with the bi lateral mast?

I didn't but everyone is different, my only suggestion is to not expect too much. i expected to look "normal" and now i know that will never come to be, what is , is the new normal. just take it real easy , i was a month out of my exchange and i lost the left implant, don't know why it happened but the incision opened up and it had to go, so take it easy is my only suggestion. and congratuations!!

Pegs thanks for that. Its easy to get caught up in the excitement but a reality check is important here too. We are all healing!! Let the body do its job and heal!

i was totally caught up in the excitement but now i'm under the impression i'll be "out of commission" for a while. i thought it was a quick recovery. how long did it take?

shiramg - I felt great just a couple of days after. I was out of commission - no exercising, lifting arms for awhile even though I felt fine - so just take it easy. Resumed exercising after 4 weeks (I think), I could walk though - good luck!!

vmudrow has it right. I felt good after three days, but took off a week from work. I did take vicodin for the first three days so even when I was sore, I was fine. I resumed walking and worked on the eliptical (the one without arm movement where there is no jiggling) around day 5 when I got my drain out.
I recommend that you speak to your PS about what to expect not only in physical limitations, but also about what your new breast will look like. I wish I had had more realistic expectations about the result.
Good Luck!

MBJ...thanks for the info about the "nipple protector"...I'll definitely be looking into that.
Kelly, welcome!!! I agree with rowan..."worry" is my first, middle and last name. My schedualed date for my exchange/reduction surgery was this THURS!!! I was so antsy..I couldnt sleep. I dont know why this surgery was affecting me more than the others (lumpectomy, MX). but I couldnt get the crazies out.
Got a call this morning from my PS's office. My PS detached his retina, and will be having his own surgery tomorrow. I think in my telling my family and friends we came up with more jokes about having either a new PS, or definitely one that will be able to match my set! I also had my 4 month check up with my Oncolgist today..(4 months on arimidex), and when I told him, he couldnt stop laughing. It kind of took me off guard how he enjoyed this...but Im willing to bet that in his field, any laughter makes his day.
Now, the crazies are gone. Im a bit bummed for having to put it off...but in the realm of all things.. it really is OK. Just another bump in the road amongst so many.

Hi Shiramg and all other Ladies, I went to my ps today for pre-op,have my exchange 1 week from today!!!!!! I was so surprised when i asked how soon i could exercise and he said 2 weeks. He also said i could just continue with my pt, my arm has gotten back quite a bit of range of motion since i started so i do not want to lose it. He said i could take walks whenever i wanted I also will not have drains! He agreed i had quite a long wait because i had radiation and some some problems ect... Did any of you Gals have radiation with inflated t/e's?? He did say that the non cancer breast (forgot the abbrv.) would hurt more,I'm having it lifted and also a smaller implant to balance me, but im ok with that pain ! i have been in pain for 8 months! I had no pain after mx,until meds wore off my t/e was fully inflated at mx. Im so excited to be brick free!!!!!!
Good tomorrow luck Shiramg keep us posted!!

I will be having my exchange on June 17th( Bilateral MX). I am very nervous. I had radiation on the left side and It will be a year since I finished radiation on July 2nd. I did have my TE's fully expanded before radiation. My plastic surgeon really wanted them fully inflated before radiation. I have a friend with another plastic surgeon and he wanted her to have a couple of fills during radiation. It seems like there are two schools of thought about it. I have had these TE's since Dec. 2009. I am very ready to rid of these TE's. My PS wants me to be very careful for 6 weeks especially with the Left side. He said he had a patient that had the incision open up after 2 months. He did say my skin looks pretty good for radiated skin. On this and other sites I have heard many stories of about people that had problems after exchange. It is good to hear what might happen, but it also makes me nervous. I get sick to my stomach from the anesthesia My family has a vacation planned 4 weeks after surgery and I really want to go with them. I try to keep myself busy so I do not think about it to much and I try to remember that I have a lot of people praying for me

Congrats to all you summer ladies in waiting. There's a bunch of you. You can PM mykidsmom to get on list above. For the most part, the exchange surgery is not too difficult. A few of us had drains, most do not..You should take it easy for about a month, but you can drive, go back to work, and do most activities in a week or so. Just no lifting.

shortlady: Welcome to the group! I would PM Estepp who did very well with her radiated breast & implant. I only know one person who ended up having her TE's in for a year and a half with one and two years for the other. It certainly isn't easy but Estepp might be able to give you some good advice.
For those about to undergo exchange: Most of us feel fine and the trick is to not reach, pull, lift, open & close car doors or any heavy door for that matter, no running, no bouncing: if you don't have any pocket work done, I would say 2 weeks minimum so you don't risk hurting yourself. Others might take longer so discuss it with your PS so you know what to expect!

Chinablue: What would you like to know about the fatgrafting process? They went through my belly button and removed fat from my tummy area and then put it back into the area above my breast to give it a more natural slope. He says he put some under my new areola, but I can't really tell. Hopefully he will go in one more time, remove the rest of my fat and get some real projection in my areola!

Beacher -- yeah I had my native breast lifted and reduced and it took a good month for the major swelling to go down (and bruising to go away) -- I am probably unusual there but you should expect more healing time for that side. My exchange side felt pretty good pretty fast but I can't remember (a week? certainly two weeks later).
Shira -- healing time completely depends on what is being done; if you are having "pocket work" done, for example, it probably won't be three days of healing. Ditto for augmentation or a lift or reduction if you are a uni. Many women who are going for a straightforward exchange DO have limited healing time, though, so you have to kind of wait and see how you do. I definitely think you should take it easy for a few days (at least!) and not push it.

Well, I hope my healing goes well....my MIL passed away this weekend and the memorial service is 3 weeks after my exchange....but 16 hours away by car!!! I wont do any driving, but I wont be sitting in my recliner either! I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! Ill have to really not move for those 2.5 weeks before we leave. Worst case, I stay behind.

SueBee: So sorry about your MIL. I hope you are fine, too. I have to admit, there were many things I felt up to doing, it was just that my body wasn't agreeing with me. Most of us do fine after 2 weeks.

Suebee -- so sorry about your MIL. I think you should be fine 3 weeks post exchange, especially if you're not driving. But 16 hours in a car! Wow that is a lot of road time (even under the best physical conditions)!

Thats good news that most feel good in 2 weeks. The service was changed from 2 weeks out to three....

My exchange surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I have had my expanders in since last July. I have put off the exchange surgery because I am just too scared to go through surgery and recovery again. Have any of you just wanted to keep your expanders forever and not have the exchange?

Salkate: No one wants to have surgery but the exchange surgery is sooo worth having nice soft breasts again! It is much easier then the MX. Yes, you have to be careful the first couple of weeks, month really, but they are soft and pretty not hard and turtle shell like. Much more natural looking, too. Hugs!

Salkate, yes, I did not want my expanders out, I was happy with them. Now just over 2 weeks from exchange, I liked the hard feeling, non moving expanders. Now have to worry about contrapture. I had fat gratfing done, easy no pain after. I did not have any pain with expanders and I was off 2 weeks after exchange and am still having some pain. I am opening heavy doors, pushing and pulling, guess I better stop. Foobs hurt after walking. Suebee sorry about MIL, hope you have things to do on the car ride. Hold those girls when you hit the bumps!

Salkate, I can't imagine keeping the expanders any longer than i have to. I had my last fill, to 980ccs, my exchange is next Wednesday, the 15th. I can not wait! They are so full and tight now, nothing like when you first get them. But knowing what the outcome is going to be, makes it all worth it! we will be one day apart!

Salkate -- Ugh my TE was painful and I woke up from exchange surgery and sighed with relief! But you are not alone. A lot of women come to really like their TEs. That said, most do love their implants (if not all) - even those who liked their TEs. If you like the firmness... you should ask your PS about the Allergan 410 ("gummy") implant. It is what I have. It is soft and pliable (and after a year I can push it into a push up bra if I so choose) but it is also firmer than regular silicone.

Thank all of you for your replies. Yes, I really like my expanders and would keep them forever if I could. My Dr. Told me today that they would eventually deflate if I didn't exchange. Did any of you pay the $100 for the insurance on the implants? Also, I have to take a multi vitamin and vitamin c twice a day for the next few weeks. Did you all have to do that?
0 -
Salkate -- what exactly are you insuring? I never heard of that. If the implant fails for any reason it has to be replaced and your health insurance must cover it. (In other words if you have health insurance why do you need MORE insurance?) And no on the vitamins. My hospital required only that I not take Vitamin E, Aspirin or Advil (among a slew of other medicines) all of which thin the blood and make one prone to bleeding (or, more precisely, diminish the ability to clot quickly -- and you want to be able to clot quickly during and after surgery). I would not take a multivitmain that contains Vitamin E if I were you.
Also: TEs are not intended for permanent placement so your doctor is right to tell you not to keep them forever.

Lilah - 16 hours is a long time. We had to do it 3 weeks after my MX because of the illness of my MIL so I know I can do it...its just a horrible drive! My kids are WELL versed in travelling too - they are great troupers.
Grey - Im sorry youre not liking the implants. Its interesting to hear that people LIKE the TE's in! I like its projection, but the tightness is almost unbearable. I cant wait to get rid of this thing! But its my left that gets to have all of the trauma this time. Ugh
Salkate - I do not have to take any vitamins right now but after surgery I have to up my protein to promote healing. I had trouble healing after the mx.

Thank you for the nice welcomes. Suebee, so sorry about your MIL and MeJoy, what a bummer about your PS- do you have a new surgery date yet? Salkate, I was also told no vitamins- especially no Vit. E. Just stopped them all to be on the safe side.

Shiramg---I had my exchange about a 7 weeks ago..also with Dr Sultan...I am crazy about him and trusted him 100%. I did not have any significant pain at all-- other than a bad reaction to the antibiotic-- I was sore for a couple of days but never even took any of the pain meds, just advil. You will do great,..it's so much faster than first part too...I think it was about 2.5 hours start to finish. Results are good so far, no one (and I show just about EVERYONE!) can believe I had a BMX (went from a small A to a solid B that looks like the size I was supposed to have). Dr. S does really beautiful work (who was your PS? I used Dr. Swistel from Cornell Weill). Please feel free to PM me or I can send you my number if you want to chat...you are in very good hands...(literally).

Namaste!
I am getting really anxious about my exchange surgery which is scheduled for 6/20 at 7 am. I am so worried that I will not be happy with the results. Although my TEs are tight and sometimes pinch, are mismatched in height placement and shape, I do love the projection in clothes. My PS keeps telling me I will be smaller after the exchange. I am already smaller than pre BMX. I was a 42 C before BMX. Based on different measurement methods I am anywhere from an A to a C+ now but I have not found one single bra that fits. Bs can be too big while some Cs are too small. I have communicated with whippetmom which has helped me with my PS but still the big fear factor looms large. I am dreading the drains again which my PS says I will have. My TEs are filled to 800 and the PS is taking 6 sizes in, 550-775. I so hope I will like what I get.

Hello, ladies. I am having my nipple "created" on Friday using the flap method. I was told i wouldn't need a bra to wear home but will be bandaged. I was wondering if anyone can give me advice regarding bras for the next few weeks and sleeping. Also, any advice on preserving the new nipple ? Will i be able to wear anything other than sports bras this summer? So many questions and any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you:)
Cleo
