Been a few days ladies. Just checking in and reading everyones post.

Glad about the stone June-those suck. Sherryc, have lovely night with hubby. Sandee, keep believing in yourself and your decision-you already know in your heart that it was the right one.

Still doing well on Tamoxifen, preparing for surgery again next Mon. Almost done with the bulk of this ride, hoping to be back at work mid Nov which is good, cause I've destroyed my savings and X-mas is coming.

    Have a great day ladies.

Hello everyone, i have been on the tamoxifen boat for two months.  I have been getting random bouts of nausea, for no apparent reason.....tried blaming left over chemo, then herceptin...but the onc thinks it is the tamox.  I take it with my breakfast, always making sure I have food in my stomach.  but these episodes are so random i never know when they are going to hit, but they are so bad i have to go lie down.  Dont know if I can do this for 5 years!  Any suggestions?

Carrie ~ I've been on tamox for 4 months and had the nausea early as well. Try taking it on an empty stomach.  I take the pill when I first get up on an empty stomach or just some coffee and wait at least a half hour before I have something light like a banana. After a couple of hours, I'm good to go.

I have never heard of Nausea as a SE.I have acid reflux which causes the same symptoms when I miss my meds.Make sure its not some other stomach issue before you give up on the tamox.Good luck.

carberry - I had nausea early on with Tamox.  Try taking it with a glass of milk in the morning.  Worked great for me.  I have been on the Tammi train for 9 months now and no issues.

I've been on it 2 years now and what worked for me was cutting my pill in half and taking half in the morning....I do it with milk too but because I'm a milk drinker....and the other half before I go to bed.

My doctor said to try it and it worked for me.  One of these suggestions will work for you too so hang in there Carrie.

Carberry I have been on for over 1 1/2 and have had only one bout  of nausea with a hot flash.  I say stick with it and try to take it at night, maybe that might help!

Carberry, I never had nausea. Some heartburn, but no nausea. I take it at night and that seems to work. Wonder if mint tea would help.

    Good luck,

    Shari

My suggestion was only that and if you try the night time and it doesn't work then give others a chance before you get discouraged.

I've had 2 years of success and just wanted to share  it.

carberry I had neausea at first really bad like I could not go to work all I could do was lie down.  So MO put me on prilosec daily with it and I have not had any more problems.

So I went to the endocrinologist today.  All my adrenals are fine which is good.  Testosterone is still low but he says I can't take any because I have a high risk factor with cardiac disease on both sides of my family.  But the really interesting thing is in Jan before tammi I was no where close to menopause.  Now I am almost finished with menopause.  All in 8 months.  I know they say that tammi does not cause you to go into menopause but I do believe it has had something to do with it.  Otherwise how would it have happened so soon and all since taking tammi.  Anyway it is gonna happen anyway so I am fine with it.  He was glad I was already taking Fosomax  because of menopause and low testosterone.  So he wants to run everything again in 6 months and I go see my MO in two weeks for my three month check up so I'll share all this with him. For those who don't know I had a hysterectomy but have my ovaries.  Did this years ago so they had to check my hormones right before so they would know what meds to put me on.  So now I understand all the weird things that having been going on with my body but all normal none the less.  But I was impressed that the endo said I could not take hormones because of my bc and he also said the only thing I could do for my hot flashes was take effexor because of the medication that I am on.  So glad to know he is up on all that stuff.  But he said the same as my MO he really did not want me to take the effexor unless I could not stand it any more.  He feels like I am on too many meds even though they are all needed right now.

Thank you everyone for your input.  I am going to try taking it at night and see if it helps.  have also been exploring the idea of prilosec, one of the onc nurses mentioned that my nausea may be disguised as acid reflux, which  I immediately poo pooed  thinking the symptoms just didi match up...but maybe she was right.  Like you say though I hate to add another drug to my list.

Have a great "hot flash free day everyone"

Barb58 welcome, this group is one of the best group of gals you could join.........good luck with your first pill.......

Happy Thursday all... it's a gloomy rainy day here in Mass but it is only for one day so it looks like I am going to be sleepy all day.......

Sherry I just asked my OBGYN to run test to see if I am close and I am still waiting to hear.  So you haven't had a period in the last 8 months, is that what I am gathering?  My period just started to get weird and my MO seems to think totally natural with the Tamox but I thought if it was going to get whacked out it would have been sooner not a year and 1/2 into it......

gloomy day here in NY also...maybe a good day to paint something?

I was sent into menopause  "chem-pause" back in January and have not had a period since.  Onc thought that at age 53 I was probably close anyways, and now the tamox seems to be keeping me there.  But.... I swear I can tell when it would be time for my period during the month.  this week was tough with the moodiness  (my poor DH) and some cramping, and not to mention  eating everything in sight!  It worries me to think there are still hormones trying to do their damage.

Sandee-I'm a mindreader that's how. Just remember everytime you feel like you are going to panic, remember it is just a moment and that moment will pass, what your heart is screaming at you can go on and on. Good luck again.

Sherryc-oh lovely menopause. I had a partial hysterectomy 2 yrs ago at age of 37 so haven't had a period in awhile. Chemo put me in chemopause and on Mon along with implants being put in, I'm having ovaries out (not taking any chances that cancer will call again). Am worried how this will effect me but I figure it is worth whatever to do everything I can to see my boys grow up. I'd stay on the effexor, it has done wonders for me, I know it sucks to be on alot of meds (hell I have a pill box and I'm just 40) but effexor does work well for the mood swings and hot flashes. I would be a very unpleasant girl without mine.

Barb58-welcome. I know it sucks, but just keep thinking that you are being proactive in your own health and that you are doing everything within your power to make sure cancer was a onetime trip. Hopefully you won't have any major SE and remember if you do, there are treatments for them and we are always here to lend support and encouragement.

juliet62-I hear ya about the eating. Have been doing the same thing since chemo ended 7 wks ago. I actually could use it since I'm naturally very thin and lost alot during chemo. Packing in the protien for surgery Mon but hope it doesn't continue at this rate cause I'll have to buy all new pants. Already had to buy new tops for the new perky girls.

Have a good day ladies. Off to pre-op.

Just a quick note to all who are fearing the Tamox SE.  I started Tamox between chemo and rads (mid July) and have only had a few SEs.  For the first 3-4 weeks my hips were stiff at the end of the day when I would sit for a long time.  That is now gone.  Also, had hot flashes about every hour from 1:30pm - 10pm and then usually 1 in the middle of the night.  I'm now down to 3-4 very short and mild flashes a day - much better and really not a big deal!

Hopefully it'll be easier than you fear!  Hang in there - and pray that every pill buys you another day without the devil returning!

Welcome newbies-It is funny how that little pill can scar the crap out of us.  I just decided to take it and not think about it.  I was one with quiet a few bad SE's in the beginning but MO kept saying they would go away and stick with it.  It took about two months and most of the bad ones went away.  Now all I have is hot flashes but that could be because I am going through menopause as well.

JUne in 1994 when I was 32 I had my uterus removed for a B9 issue.  I kept my ovaries because I was so young.  So I have not had a period in 17 years.  So the only way to know if I am going through menopause is with the blood work.  My gyno started doing it on me several years ago just trying to know when it was happening since I can't tell from periods.  So before tamox MO ran test to see what he was going to treat me with and tamox won because all my bloodwork still said I was no where close to menopause.  So we are going to check in 6 months and see where things are again.

Welcome to all the Newbies!  Yes, that little white pill can sure play mind games with you.  I just took the plunge even after two failed attempts with the AIs.  I look at it as an added insurance policy.  I just throw it in the mix with my other pills.

Thank you for the welcome everyone!

My doctor prescribed it for me in 10mg tablets and told me to take one in the morning and one in the evening so I took the first one last night before I went to bed. I kept trying to tell myself that it was going to take care of any little leftover cells that might be floating  around.

I'm 53 and still premenopausal but I have been starting menopause symptoms so I'm hoping it won't be any worse than what I'm going through already. The part that freaks me out is the blood clot and uterine cancer stuff, especially when the doctor went through both those possibilities with me..

I hope everyone has a blessed day! Thank you for the encouragement!

    Hi Ladies,

Just started my tamoxifen 3 days ago chemo had already put me into early menopause, and the tamox so far has not made the hot flushes any worse infact they seem to be a bit better, really hard to tell as we are experiencing an indian summer over here in england and its really hot!!! So not sure if its me the weather or the tamox. I was so scared about taking the darn pill infact more scared than doing the chemo or the surgery, still got rads to go but hopefully the tamoxifen wont give me too many SE.

    Love and light to all

Seety I too was more freaked out about the Tammo then the chemo.  I dont know why.  Heck the chemo was way worse on my the the Tammo.  I have had hot flashes like crazy and mine have not let up any at all.  I envy you gals who are not dripping in buckets of sweat or feel like ripping your clothes off cause its so dang hot.  The upside is I finally got my freak back so hubby isnt complaining.  Have a great day all!
