Hi, here's yet another Tamoxifen virgin. Have been reading the thread for some time, working on a final decision.  I am still in radiation, but it's going ok, so I asked the MO to just start me on the drug already.  The dread was too much...would rather know.

Hi SAB - My ONC started me on the tammi along side the rads.  She specializes in BC.  I was very concerned about the tammi .. and was not pleased with early SE's including elevated cholesterol numbers.  She felt strongly that I deal with the SE's for as long as possible.... a minimum of 6 months to a year... if after that I couldn't deal we'd go for an ooph.  She was very convincing with recent studies of the benefits of tamoxifen over the ooph.   I am four months out of rads and my period has returned to pretty much normal prior to BC.  Hot flashes have subsided as well... I'm going to stick it out as long as possible...  It takes a while to process all the info ... this group has been a godsend to help with all the anxiety.

Barb58- yep scary....but scarier if we didn't have the option hmm? I meet my oncologist on Tuesday  to talk other hormones since I can no longer take Tamoxifen...his nurse is lovely but her message essentially said 'come in so we can give you a prescription'...not what she meant, I know...and I truly am grateful that there are hormone optins out there...but like you, I am scared...do not want any more medications...do not want to be afraid of the possibility of side effects...but it is what it is....it will b eok

Survivor11- yep..forgot my own 24 hour rule!...met with the lawyer today..she suggested getting the house assessed before I go any further as it was assessed last year much lower...I know nothing of this stuff...know private sales can go screwy...and after quitting my job this week...it just alll feels like Too much!...so I am stepping back fo ra bit...going to go to African dance tomorrow , paddle on Saturday and see if they can use a volunteer on Sunday for the runforthecure....that should give me some perspective, hmm?

MamaV- I keep a fan beside my bed and when I wake up between 2 and 4am, I just turn it on myself full blast (just a little fan will do it) and I fall back asleep...at work I wear my shoes in and put my sandals on ....I wear layers and just put them on and off all day long....a spritzer might help too!

Well tammi sister's tomorrow is my one year cancervesary.  I thought months ago I would be emotional but not I'm excited that Jo is coming to stay with me for the weekend and we are celebrating tomorrow night.  Also a good friend and her husband are coming to dinner.  She was the one who got to listen to me cry my eyes out last Christmas when I was miserable during rads. I am already looking forward to next year because by then I will have my BMX and reconstruction behind me and then maybe I can feel more done with all this stuff.  But emotionally I am ready and gonna celebrate tomorrow.

That's lovely Sherry, congrats! Have fun and you two hug each other for us.

I read on another thread that  the reason some ROs want you to wait for Tamoxifen is that they want the cells actively dividing through the rads, and Tam slows that process.  Has anyone read anything on this?

sherry  congrats!  I am 1 year post diagnosis on Oct 2.  what a long year :(

I also didnt start tamox till after rads were done, didnt get an explanation, but i didnt ask either, figured there must be a reason.  I did ask the onc about taking a baby aspirin every day while on tamox, to try to prevent blood clots, and he gave me the go ahead.  i started taking it before diag, just because of age and family hx of heart disease, but stopped for all the ca treatments.

Hi all - took my first Tamoxifen this morning.  Finished rads Sept. 7, no chemo.  thought I would go on an AI, but MO gave me the choice of Tamoxifen or no hormone therapy, so I chose tamox for that little bit of added protection.  Hoping for no side effects.

Hi pat01! I took my first tamoxifen on Wednesday so we are starting this part of the journey together. Hopefully we both won't have to deal with side effects or at least minimal ones!

Jo and Sherry have loads of fun and please post pictures on Facebook.  And as for any ladies currently not on FB, it is great that we can be ourselves here but really learn more about each other there as well.  So if any of you want to look me up, look under June Babineau Bonetti, I would love to connect with you all there as well.

Well off to see my urologist now, yipee.....still sore there, but not painful.  I just really think the stone sat there too long and I am a little irritated, that's all.....

Happy Friday and lets all meet for drinks later in the Caboose......

Thanks June I sent you a friends request!

Well all I came back from my 3 months post final chemo.  I get to stay on the Tamo for another 3 months.  Other then that things look good.  I have to go see a  rheumatologist for the pain I have had since the chemo.  She thinks it may be left from that or the tamoxifen.  Joy Joy another doctor to see.  Thanks BC I really love how you are making the rest of me fall apart, you suck!  Ok enough of the pity party!

Have a blast Jo and Sherry, you both will be missed!

Welcome to the boards pat.  If you need anything just post away, someone here might be able to help.  We all have been where you are now and know what its like.  The gals here are a great bunch.

Okay......... going to try and take tamoxifen again. I started it in May for about three weeks and had some dizziness. My MO said he didn't think that was from the tamoxifen, but I stopped taking it and the dizzines went away. Maybe just a fluke. He wants me to try it again. UGH.

    Anyone else suffer from cramps?

I've been on Tamoxifen for well over a year. Lately I've been having cramps in my feet on waking up in the morning. If I remember to stretch my legs, pushing into the heels, before getting out of bed it seems to help. I'm wondering if the cramps are a SE of Tamoxifen or something else.

What does heartburn feel like? I started having chest pain two weeks ago -- just a dull pain in the middle of my chest. It seems worse in the morning or maybe I'm just more aware of it. Because my chemo included Adriamycin, my onc sent me to a cardiologist before I started chemo and I've seen her a couple of times since then. So I called her office last week and they told me to come right away and they would fit me in. The nurse practitioner did an EKG and checked BP and everything looked OK. The cardiologist said it was probably acid reflux (is that the same as heartburn?)

Next day they had me come back for a stress test. The insurance company wouldn't approve an Echo-Stress, so they did what they called a regular stress test. This was supervised by a different cardiologist. I lasted about 10 minutes on the treadmill before I was getting a little breathless. Cardiologist said I was fine (though not ready for the Olympics yet!) and he too said it's probably heartburn. I thought with heartburn that I would have a sensation like acid coming up my throat. Is that typical? I haven't followed up with my GP yet.

MaryNY - I had the foot cramp thing.  I try to eat a banana a day and it doesn't happen much anymore.  Have you tried that?  On the heartburn, for me, it's right after I eat.  Is kind of a heaviness in the middle of my ches just like you describet.  I have no burning in my throat or esophagus.  I too had AC and had an echo pre and post chemo and both within normal limits.  They also did an EKG which was fine.  I think acid reflux and heartburn are the same thing or related.  I'm going to try an OTC remedy and call my MO in the morning, but it really seems like heartburn to me.  I googled heartburn and tamoxifen and it said it's an SE that 2-19% of patients get.

Sandee - yikes, you had a heart attack?  Is everything okay?  I really think mine is heartburn because it comes pretty consistently about 30 minutes after I eat.

BCisnofun/Mary...try gaviscon if they think it is acid reflux...if it is a heaviness in the chest, it sounds like angina...I had never had acid reflux but my ex did...the week before my heart attack ( or event whatever you want to call it), I woke up from a sound sleep at 2am with a burning sensation in my chest/throat. I took peptobismol and waited a bit and then went back to bed...four days later, Igoogles the Canadian heart and stroke site and read about women an dheart...when it happened again on the 21 of March, I was also really agitated....could not settled. the peptobissmol did nothing to releive he burning an dthen the burning started radiating across my shoulder...realized the heat was actually pain and called 911...that was 6 months ago....5 days before my 49th birthday,..my dad had a massive coronary at the same age but because he smoked, drank, worked too hard, had high blood pressure and did not exercize a ton, none of my dr's thought I was at risk....my bp is 112/70, I exercize a ton, do not smoke, rarely drink and when I do it is a glass of red wine....laugh a lot...but it had been a stressful 18 months...husband of 16 years had left , breast cancer had been diagnosed and dealt with and I was trying to decide what to do now...waiting on the year mammogram to decide if I stay or go ...BAM...heart attack....so...take it seriously...

I am an 11/7 on the stress test..don't know how many minutes that means I lasted but I was 10/7 just after the heart attack and apparently that was really good to start with. A firefighter is a 16/7...7 is what you are expected to be in this age range, apparently....

Jo, Sherry, Chrisse...great photos! Love the pink hair jo

The Texas get together was absolutely fabulous - had such a great time.  SherryC is such an incredible hostess.  I have lots of pictures that I will post of FB in the next couple of days.  Right now I am so tired from the drive home but know that it is will worth it.  Should be able to sleep really well tonight.

Sandee: I don't see figures like yours on my stress test. I see BP Rest 130/84, BP Peak 172/90, HR Rest 88, HR Peak 175, DP (what's this?) 30100. Also ST abnormalities absent, Symptoms absent, Arrythmias absent, BP response normal, Test terminated due to fatigue. I thought the pain might be angina but that would definitely worsen with exercise, would it not? and the pain did not get any worse with the stress test nor does it change when I walk briskly.

Bcisnofun: I really like bananas. I think they are such a great snack, but I haven't had any for a few weeks/months as they are hard to keep in the hotter weather. I just happened to buy some yesterday before I even saw your comment and will have one a day for the next few days.I also did a good bit of walking today so hopefully that will help too.
