Happy New Year to all of you guys. Wishing you all the best in all aspects of your life. God loves us all and He will do amazing things in our lives. As he said "He will grant the desires of our hearts".

Well, thank you for the advices. Actually her oncologist went back to her country in Switzerland for good that's why she was replaced by a new oncologist. Unfortunately, this new doctor would hardly recommend her to finish the treatment for 5 years as there would be only 3 years left and it will finish the race. And he said his afraid of the reoccurrence in the future coz she got the BC at the age of 29. Just for preventing on it. In this reason, I realized that this doctor was not as open when it comes to ideas compared to her oncologist before from switzerland. We both working as a nurse in different facility. In this regard, I decided to have a second opinion for a good advice that will hear our concern. I have heard in our hospital that there will be a visiting doctor from UK and it would be a great opportunity to see him then. And of course we'll be asking for God's wisdom for both of us and the oncology doctor. I will let you know guys the update then. Thank you very much and have a prosperous new year ahead. God bless us.

    Lovingly yours,

I just started Tamoxifen yesterday. A little nervous about the se's. So far what I have noticed is I just feel sort of yucky. Not sure if that is the Tamoxifen or not, today it could just be lack of sleep and too much wine last night!

Welcome Beebop The ladies here are awesome group and will make you feel  welcome anytime.  Hoping the SE are nothing for you, it probably was the wine last night.  I started with headaches pretty much immediately during the 1st week along with constipation.....good luck!

Mindboggling good luck with you and your wife trying to conceive.  I have another friend who was contemplating Tamox cause she knew she really wanted children and they told her to go ahead and they would then have her start as soon as she delivered.  They are just keeping a closer eye on her. So here is hoping that you can start a family......wishing you a wonderful New Year.

June so sorry about your mom I hope she pulls through this.  You have had too much to deal with this past year.

Betsy so glad you have not had any bad SE's

    beebop and Karen welcome aboard.

I had company this weekend and was very busy but it was nice having my old friends come to visit. Put up Christmas decorations today and did some major yard work as it was really pretty outside today.  I have been on the steroids which I finish tomorrow and the doctor took me off of Celebrex while I was on it.  So I decided I am not going to take the Celebrex and see if my stiff joint pain returns.  I thought this would be a good time to test it.  Also regarding hot flashes I have discovered that eating sugar makes me have major hot flashes so I am just staying away from sweets.

Hi ladies.  Thanks for letting me join the group.  I started tamoxifen 2 1/2 months ago.  I am having some minor side effects such as constipation and moodiness, mild depression, etc.  But I am having such major pain in the muscles of my shoulders and arms that it is affecting my quality of life.  Getting dressed and undressed, my arms hurt.  The pain wakes me up and keeps me awake at night.  I am unable to groom or ride my horse without pain.  So yesterday, Jan.1, I decided to go off of it for a while to see it I feel better. No relief yet, but I know it might take a while.

I have tried a heating pad, Epsom salt bath, alieve (not sure it's safe to take this long term) yoga among other things.  I am stage III, and my oncologist says that even after the surgery, chemo, and rads I have gone through, there is still a 10 to 15% chance of recurrence.  And tamox it supposed to cut that in half right?(5 to 7%).  My tumor tested only 16% E pos. but my oncologist says they recommend tamoxifen for anyone that is even 1% E pos.

What would you ladies do?  I am 52 years old and try to lead a very active life.  Would you tuff it out, or quit and look for natural alternatives?  Or would you keep looking for ways to control the pain?  Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Hi Jules! Nice to "see" you here. We started about the same time. I have been on it for two and a half months too. I am also stage 3. I don't have shoulder pains, but do have finger, hand, knees and foot pains. And also constipation which I did not know was from tamoxifen. I am not sure how much of the joint pain is from tamoxifen and how much is herceptin. I am 40% ER+, but 70% PR+. Are you more heavily PR+ too? I think the tamoxifen helps because of that in addition to the ER+. Have you tried a supplement like glucosamine and chondroitin? Or perhaps acupuncture or something your onc could prescribe? I think I would at least try something like that before giving up on it. I know how you feel when you say you're stage 3, if I were stage 1 or 2, and especially with the low ER+, I would stop it more easily. I am still taking the herceptin even though it damaged my heart and is giving me lots of joint pain. That's what the onc and cardiologist advised, so I would try to keep up the tamoxifen despite the aches if I were you, but if it is hurting your QOL, then it is a tough decision. Even though I have a lot of joint pain, it's not constant, mostly in the morning and when I get up from sitting for a while, so at least for the time being I am going to put up with it. Let us know how it goes not taking the tamoxifen and what you decide to do. You will make the decision that is right for you. (((((hugs)))))

June, hope your mum is doing better, sorry to read that development....thanks to everyone for input..am hoping SE settle down too. It is not overwhelming, and the joint pain is prob the worst altho sometimes those hot flushes can be overwhelming and my bed is always a huge mess in mornings!
I have a question...i am wondering if the severity of SE is related to how much estrogen you were producing prior to tamoxifen..ie, how premenapausal you actually were, which would correlate to age too of course....do younger premenapausal women fare worse with SE? not that I am one lol, but just wondering

JUles59 I am also just barely  ER+ and my MO still wants me taking Tamoxifen.  I thinking taking a holiday sometimes is good because if your SE's get better then you can go back on it.  Tamox is funny as some people have a hard time with it take a holiday from it and get back on it with no problems.  If you are lucky then that will happen and you will be good but if not and the SE's come back and are not tollerable at least you can have a great discussion with your MO

Kay, I am not at all PR pos. (0%)  I'm not sure what effect the tamoxifen has on progesterone.  Sorry to hear you're having so many problems, too.  I haven't talked to my OD for about 1 1/2 months, back when I first started to have side effects.  He recommended the Alieve and moist heat which don't help much.  I am afraid he will give another presciption to combat the SE, which will also have SE.  Constipation is one of the SE listed. I take the same vegatable laxative I took during chemo for that.  It goes on and on, doesn't it?

Today is my last day for my steroid pac for the pain in my neck.  So far it does not seem to be helping much.  DH took it for his back last year and he said sometimes it takes a couple of days finishing it before it kicks in.  Let's hope it works as I really hate to go  the the expense of an MRI but that would be better than staying in pain. I am staying positive that this will work.

Looks like I missed a pillow fight while I was partying all weekend celebrating the end of 2011 - I hope I never see a year like that again! I'll jump in next time.

June - how's your mom doing?

Mindboggling - let us know what the other doc says!

Sorry to hear some of you are in pain ... I switched to arimidex after 3 months on tamoxifen and I still feel like I'm 90 years old when I sit too long and especially when I get out of bed. Feel MUCH better if I work out (I go to the gym on my lunch hour) - how's that for motivation to exercise? Wish I felt better if I didn't exercise - lol

louis.. that is a good question. I have heard from some that it is harder on pre menapausal women but honeslty I dont know. I am pre menapausal and I have had a hard time with Tam.. still plugging through though. I had a close friend of mine who is now 10 years out take Tamoxifen for all five years and not one single issue.. she was post menapausal, so that is a very good question.

Junie.. thinking about you and your mom!

Sherry hoping your neck is feeling better!

Jo Paula Paula M MamaV Shari and all my Tammy friends.... hope your having a good day!

I started tamoxifen 11/07 after being dx with a small low grade DCIS in March of that year.  I had a lumpectomy and rads.  It took me a few months before I finally broke down and started taking tamoxifen because everyone (onc, rad onc, breast surgeon) felt it would be a good idea.  Standard of care and all that.  I tolerated it fairly well, a few hot flashes, very few periods but other than that no problems.  I am 50 but still premenopausal or peri menapausal as of last year  (I was tested).  I was 46 when I was dx so I felt that taking it was the right thing to do.

Fast forward 4 years.  I go for an annual pelvic exam.  They say you can have an ultrasound if you like you've never had one.  So I had one.  And not one hour later I'm getting called back to have a biopsy on my uterus because of thickening.  It's next Monday and I'm beside myself.  I'm hoping it's just because thickening in the lining of the uterus is a risk factor, and not because they've seem something bad. If they find something I will never forgive myself.

    I just hate this disease.

MAria and Rosemary (Louis13).. I am definitely pre-menapausal, aged 48, and have basically no SE. The dehydration seems to be it that I can tell... It has only been 2-3 weeks, so maybe something will start, but I don't see a correlation with age. AND isn't Tamoxifen supposed to be for pre-menapausal women only anyway?? I was told by my MO that I will take it for 3 years and then switch to a post menapausal drug most likely.

Hi all!  I was left with nasty pain from the chemo and from Tammo.  I had a check up with the ONC Friday and he says that the pain is something that I will have as long as Im on it, UGH!  Somedays are worse then others.  Yesterday was a nightmare for I was miserable from the time I got up until I went to bed.  My whole upper half was in bad shape.  I just try and make the best of it and try to keep moving.  Somedays its really hard when I dont feel good at all.  I do get down in the dumps about it sometimes because I feel like an 85yr old instead of a 45 yr old.  I have to go deep into my mind and force myself to just get over it.  Man up is what I have to say to myself sometimes.  I cant let the BC continue to control me so I fight it the best I can!  I just cant believe that this is joint pain.  Its like my whole upper half was on fire! But then again I have never felt like this until I had treatment.  I know my body has been through enough in the past year so I just have to look at it that way too.  Im sure its screaming at me for what its been through as well.

Love and hugs to you all!  Welcome to you new gals around here.  The woman are great here and I love them lots.  Come back for whatever it is you need.  The weekends are a great stress relief for me.  Junie is really good at taking hits from the pillows, lol!  Love ya June!

Gonna go finish up chores that I didnt get done yesterday, UGH! have a great day my sistas and I love you all!

Paula hope you get to feeling better

It took several months for me to notice side effects. I had minimal hot flashes, but sleep disturbance and bloating, eye irritation, headaches....constipation....hungrier at night... After 2 1/2 years they have mostly mellowed...I take a 10mg tab in the am and pm. Hair is thinner...but luckily I have thick hair...nails not great but manageable...don;t know if the belly bloat is gone for good...had the DIEP surgery so old belly is now right boob!...so far, so good...

I was not menopausal at diagnosis...after 2 years in chemopause Onc wanted me to switch to AI, but I chose to stay on Tamox...survival difference was very minimal and I am finally used to to Tamox....Tamox is not just for pre meno...it used to be the only pill in the arsenal until the AI's....

Amy.. funny you mention the belly bloat... You are two years out from DIEP and still have bloat?? I wonder if the bloat is from Tamoxifen or the DIEP... I have the bloat and didn't have it before stage II but have it after.. so now I am wondering if its the DIEP or tamoxifen. I am only 7  weeks post stage II... and thats a good point about switching drugs at the midway point.. Maybe if I am used to it, why mess with it?

sjack827, sending good thoughts your way and hoping it's just benign thickening of the lining. I know that can be a side effect of the tammi, especially after you've been on it a few years. Keep us posted!

No- I don't have bloat now...I did notice a continued increase in belly fat from menopause and or tamox...DIEP took it away....I am just 6 months from stage 1

Amy... I knew you had surgery this year that is why I was a bit confused... So you had stage one in May and stage II in September and never got bloated? Your bloat was from menapause or tamoxifen but you haven't had it since surgery?? Is that right? I am trying to figure out my bloat, and can't figure it out... it does seem worse since I started Tamoxifen, but that also coincides with ending compression garments. So I have put myself back in compression trying to figure it all out.

I had stage one Memorial Day week-end, Stage 2 with scar revision, lift of "good boob" and lipo, mostly back from bra line to saddle bags...in Sept...Labor Day

Prior to DIEP, I was weighing less or the same as pre cancer, but it was redistributed...saggy 36-38 D breasts, that were not saggy pre BC, bloated belly...they actually call it tamoxi belly on some threads...

The DIEP eliminated it, but it was 3 months after the stage 2 before all my surgery swelling was down I think...on Dec 7th  (2b)I had the nip done on DIEP boob and another lift of "good boob" because I lost 15-20 pounds between stage 2a and 2b....I do not feel swollen now...I have had a 6 week tamox break three times this year...3 weeks pre and post surgery because of clot risks...I started back up today so we will see where I end up....I really hope the bloated tamox belly stays gone. I had uni lateral stacked DIEP...cut from side to side just above pubic bone. (my old belly button is a good six inches from the new one...I was pretty tight initially but it has softened some...) I have a much better overall shape than I had pre surgery....I always had a "belly" but nothing like the one tamox gave me...maybe it is tamox, maybe menopause...I hated it though and hope it is gone for good. I am usually a 12, sometimes an 8 or a 10 pants...the pants fit everywhere but the belly after a year on tamox and I was less weight and working out...very odd "old lady shape"....I wore the compression until the dom was too loose...about a month or 6 weeks...switched to spanx or other brands...stayed in compression most of the time since surgery...especially waist down...I purchased some leggings with a compression quality in gray black and brown and have lived in them mostly since stage 2...if you find yourself gaining weight after 6 months without changing your diet...cut down on the carbs big time and it will help maintain...

I had a horrid time on tamox I thought...but some of it could have just been how hard and fast menopause hit me...I was full of estrogen, age 50 and still getting period every 28 days and still getting acne...some of what I thought were tamox side effects may have been insta menopause...I have leveled out completely and feel so much like my old self without the pms mood swings...I was diagnosed April 6th 2009, chemo May and June of 09, MX July 8th 2009, started tamox a week after surgery and then 30 rads started Aug 09....it has been a ride...I had a ton of huge family crisis things going on prior to my own diagnosis...it was the twilight zone for a bit and that may have all played into what I thought were my tamox symptoms....
