Hi ladies... Just trying to do this photo stuff but couldn't get my photo and larger. I lurk here often and just became brave enough a couple of weeks ago to go topless. This is a picture of myself that I took last week at about 13 weeks pfc. My hair seemed so slow growing at first but then really has taken off over the past couple of weeks. I will be on Herceptin until August so I hope it doesn't slow things down. So far my hair is very straight and wants to do this weird "faux hawk" type thing on top but it's hair and I'm thrilled to have it!Email & IM Direct link HTML code IMG code 0 -
mommaof4 - mine faux-hawked too, then it got long enough on the top to kind of lay down!

again, thank you all!
my hair is still faux-hawking, which some in my family find funny since i am a mohawk... lol
it's long enough that i can - with the help of product - make it lay down, but when i just wash it and towel dry it, i end up with that.
i'm wondering if chemo curls are a given. at this length, especially in the back, it's really wavy! it had a slight wave when it was long and would perhaps have been very wavy if it had ever been really short, but i'm kind of doubting that. has anyone not developed curls?
as for latisse, i know a lady who uses it just because she's always had teeny little sparse lashes. she definitely has had success with the product.
mommaof4, you look great! =D

Count me in on the faux-hawk look - first it was straight but faux-hawked, now it's curly with a faux-hawk unless I tame it down. When I blowdry it, it staightens the curls and is just wavy except in the back. Sometimes on the weekend I just towel dry it and let it faux-hawk because they kids like how crazy it looks!

missy111 -- my plastic surgeon had a special - buy 1 get 1 free on latisse and I am loving the results. I had lost all of my eye lashes and now 23 pfc they are getting really long and thick.

Ladies , I think you look beautiful in your new 'dos. Really. I got emotional when I saw your photos...you are combat veterans of an ugly war and I can't wait till I look like you.
Another hair question: I didn't lose all my hair on AC and I'm now on a Taxol regime with 6 weeklies to go... I still have stubble about 1/8" long all over my head. I used to be able to pull out the stubbies but now they are permanently in my head; when I pull on them it HURTS, like pulling out a longer strand of hair. I can't tell if they are growing or not--but I'm loathe to shave again. They used to feel crunchy when I pushed down on them, but now they feel soft and a little "different" if you know what I mean.
I wondered if I should shave them to see if I'm getting any growth; will they "block" follicles when my hair grows in? Does this sound like these stubbies might still be "alive" and I should leave them alone? Will new hair push out this old stuff or is this stuff able to grow when that happens?
So many questions! Sorry!
XO

frankenboob - looking amazing!
momof4 - congrats! Welcome to the brave club! You have a pretty face so you pull it off well!
By the way - I measured again last night (yes - I am obsessed) - 2 1/2 inches on the top and in front, 2 3/4 inches in back. I am 7 months PFC tomorrow! Come on hair ... GROW!

Thanks for all of your encouragement. I am going today after lunch to get the color, and get the hair over my ears and on my neck cleaned up a bit. I am just going to go for it. I figure that it has to be a lot less shocking to see me with very short hair than it was to see me for the first time when it all came out hiding under a hat.
It seems like every little thing, like this, gives me such anxiety anymore. I just have to do it and get it over with! I will try to post a pic later.

Frankenboob (love the name) I have two co-workers who had cancer (one BC one uterine) both their hair came back straight not even a wave.. Another BC sister I work with has a mass of curls,, There are two of us with hair to short to tell what hair is going to do yet.. Some days it looks straight some days it looks like it might go curly.. Have to wait and see.. ( I work in a place where we have about 300 women so the number of C is not out of the ordinary )

My hair stopped falling out after AC. Never lost anymore on Taxol. (Although I did loose eyelashes and brows after Taxol) It started to grow, but ever so slow. And was chemo white..but it was hair.. Had the "chemo" hair trimmed last week and felt great

ILboysmom: just go for it! I told everyone at work that I was going to get my hair colored and tomorrow there would be no wig. It's painfully short, and yes caused alot of anxiety, but it was time to move on. The salon visit was wonderful. It's nice to feel like a girl again.
So far I have done: biotin supplements, biotin shampoo, gromedi scalp tonic, and a multi vitamin. My roots since color 4 weeks ago are just under a whopping 1/2 inch (yes I measured). Today I went and got pre-natal vitamins. C'mon hair.....

I love the hair!
Frankenboobs, LOVE the hair and the lashes!!!! I still have short stubby lashes.
Got my first haircut today since the big shave after my 1st chemo. I was starting to get a mullet. I am not thrilled but I will deal. I look like a boy. My last herceptin is march 28th.

Thank you for all the compliments!! I am also a Latisse user. My plastic surgeon at Northwestern did an internal study and 100% of users kept lashes and brows all throughout chemo and after. I started using it about 4 weeks before starting chemo so my lashes and brows were super thick by the time they started thinning a little. I did end up plucking my lashes out about 8 weeks after chemo ended because I had so many new ones coming in that my old lashes started going in all different directions and sticking in my eye... and I did lose most of my brows. So I looked like I didn't have lashes and brows for maybe about 2 weeks. Anyway, my lashes and brows are very thick again and my lashes are getting longer every day. I wish I could have made my pic larger... I would definitely recommend Latisse as it made this whole horrible process much easier for me to handle

Claire: I did A/C and Taxol. Lost my hair on A/C, was told it would start to grow back on Taxol. And it did!! Just as you're describing, softish strands. Let it grow, and I'm thrilled for you. Still have some chemo white tips, but it was nice to have my first haircut about 16 weeks pfc.

wrong-- my post was wrong. I only have 1/4 " of roots showing. I read that hair grows 1/2 " a month. But NO, not me. arggh.
I too am a latisse user--but my lashes don't look anywhere near Mommaof4's or Franken's! I kept some lashes during chemo, but had some big empty spaces.

thanks all for the compliments!

thanks, ossa, for the information. that's an amazing number of women you work with but i'm still surprised by the number with cancer. it's an epidemic these days. would be nice to find out why...
mommaof4, i considered doing latisse before i started chemo but i didn't know if it would be worth the expense if in the end they all fell out anyway. i wish i had researched that better. i lost the last of them about 8 weeks after chemo finished but they were only gone about 3 weeks. i was amazed at just how fast they grew in once they got started again!claireinaz, we've all felt that way in our journey. i came here for months and spent a lot of time looking at photos of new growth and such, and longed for the day when i could add mine to the roster. if i were you, i wouldn't sacrifice a mm of your hair. if it's firmly planted, leave it go and see what develops. the way you describe it is exactly how i described mine when it first started growing back. it sounds hopeful.

Not sure if this is the right thread but all you ladies seem so knowledgable and I need some advice. I am a few days past my 3rd A/C treatement. I shaved my head 2 weeks ago and still have some stubble in places. Mostly, I am concerned because my head is scaly, like dandruff. It is cold and dry here in New England.
Are there any products you all used? Should I be moisturizing my head (seems weird to say that)? Dandruff shampoo? Use something like a Sensitive skin body wash on my head? Should I keep it covered at home or should I cover it to prevent more drying from the heat being on? I am a newbie to all this hair stuff and have no idea what I'm doing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! <HUGS>

Hi Brooke, welcome! I used a mild soap on my head and then moisturized with the same stuff I use on my face. I did keep my head covered mostly because it got cold. Once my hair started growing a little I started using a biotin shampoo.

My hairdresser told me to always use a moisturizing shampoo - she said just because you don't have hair doesn't mean to not use shampoo - keeps the head moisturized, and the hair when it starts coming back in. There were a couple of times I used coconut oil on my head since I didn't want to add more chemicals to the mix!

Momof...
I used a little virgin olive oil on my head. Massaged it in.. found this very soothing

I used Johnson's baby wash on my bare head (works well all over). It has no soap, so did not dry out my skin. Once my hair started growing back, I resumed using my regular shampoo and conditioner. I'd forgotten how wonderful my shampoo smells!

I used olive oil also, and kept my head covered most of the time to protect myself from the dryness and the cold.
