I think Latisse only has that warning because when it was used IN the eye (that's not the way you'd use it now) it had that SE.  Others know the answer to this one.

Sunflower I love your cut the staircasing in the back is beautiful. My hair came in pretty much the way it was kind of curly/wavy but a little thicker than the baby fine hair I had before. I started to blow it dry every day as soon as it got to my ears. I am 13 months PFC and I only cut it once and that was when I first got coverage at 4 months and I barely cut anything just evened it out. I wet it then dry it every day but only shampoo ever 2 to 3 days. Mu hair has always been difficult to style so I am used to dealing with this. I use loads of hairspray.

    Hey guys,

Nioxin # 3 is for chemically treated hair. I have been using this for years and it is great. Keeps the hair you have from falling out. The packaging is all in gild writing. So whether you color, or perm this is the number you should be using.I have not seen anything in it that can be bad for you.

    Hi Everyone,

I just had my first trim at 4 1/2 months. I must say I am a little depressed. I measured my hair. It is only 1 1/2 inches in some spots and 2 inches in other spots and thin on the sides. I got it coloured to get rid of the grey but I don't think it made me feel any better. My hairdresser mentioned that aveda (with is supposed to be 95% natural) has a new line of hair thickener/starter. I haven't checked it out yet. Don't know what to do.

sunflower, your hair looks awesome! i cannot wait until mine becomes something that looks like a hairstyle i might have chosen. thanks for sharing! :)

claire, mine felt like it took forever to stop being stubble and to start feeling a little like hair, but really, once it takes off, it happens very quickly. i started taking pics of it once a week - mondays since i finished my chemo on a monday - and even if i couldn't see the daily changes, i could really see them from week to week. i'm glad i did the pics now. i will keep doing them until i stop thinking of it as "chemo hair"... lol

as for the nightmares, i think those are pretty common too. i don't think that anyone could go through what we've gone through and not worry a little about dying too soon. i still find myself mentally adding "if i'm still here" to the ends of sentences. i have a flash of panic every time i have an unexplained ache or pain - "is it a new tumour?!" - and i wonder if we ever really get to feel and believe that everything is going to turn out okay. when does the worry stop? i know i'm not alone. every person who has ever had to face this hideous disease has asked themselves the same questions. i get by with that old saying, "one day at a time". it's all we've got... regardless.

lago, luvrving, and carrol, you're all inspirations! i call you my "hair models".. lol

artsee I love nioxin too. I used it after I finished chemo and my hiar grew fast not sure if tht is why though, it always grew pretty fast. But I do see parabens and methylparabens on the label which is supposed to be bad for you, they say it can cause cancer. Here is a link that describes the concerns. I am still trying to find a good deodorant without parabens.

Carrol there is a lot of controversy over parabens. There is so little in these products. Here is The American Cancer Society's view, The National Cancer Insititute's view, Komen's view and another article from the Chicago Tribune talking about the controversy.

There is a list of "Factors Under Study" on the Komen site too: linky

I worry more about the crap in our water, food, , pesticides, cleaning products, air pollution (vehicle exhaust) more than cosmetic and lotions. The amount in these products are so minimal.

Lago thanks for the info. I did not research this well and did not know all the opinions. I just feel like so many of the things you describe are things we cannot really control but some of the smaller things we can, things we bring into our homes ourselves every day. Also I don't trust that all parties have our best interest in mind when they say these things are safe. Parabens are a cheap way to preserve products so I am not saying companies are intentionally harming us or even that the small amount they use is harmful, but you gotta wonder.

Carrol I totally understand but I do believe it's such a small amount. There are many things I rather focus on (and spend extra dollars) than these products. What we eat I think is more of an issue because of pesticides, hormones etc. Don't even get me started on our water supply and what's in there. No body else in my family has breast cancer, no one including my 74 YO mom and my sister (2.5 years older than me ). Granted they don't live in the city breathing all the exhaust I breathe. Granted they both have kids but my sister had them after 30. Neither breast fed.

We can drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out what is bad for us and what is good for us........ no one really knows do they? I wonder when the anxiety and the nightmares go away to frankenboob. The feelings are just so overwhelming at times. Wish we had a crystal ball that told us when it was going to get better.

    Hi Ladies

I posted on another thread that I got my chemo hair chemically straightened last week.  I am 41 weeks pfc and my hair is between 2 and 3 inches long.

The straightening has made a huge difference.  I couldn't achieve any reduction in the curls myself and this requires no work at all.  Straightening, however, cannot be used in conjunction with a recent colour.  I think I would rather have straight than coloured. (My natural colour is mid brown and I have highlighted it blonde for about 30 years prior to chemo).

I tried really hard today to upload some pics to photobucket.  I installed the software and add on Explorer software, created an account etc but when I got to the upload screen I could not find a button anywhere to actually enact the upload.  Any clues?

I also wanted to upload photos of my hair extensions that you have been waiting for, if I can overcome the technical difficulties.

To recap, my post chemo hair (and indeed my pre chemo hair) looks very much like Dragonfly's!

I got hair extensions in December but as the chemo curls kept poking through, I got the hair straightening in addition.

Carol and lago....If we listened to everything that could possibly hurt us in some way, we'd be walking around naked, looking emaciated, from not eating, and our faces would be purple from holding our breath.

That's how we would have to be careful because I think there is something harmful in everything. We have to use our judgement to make good choices and as far as my hair goes...it's important to me and if it helps retain what I have on my head, I'm using it. Being in the hair industry for 42 years, I've used Nioxin for many many years and I'm not backing down now. That's how strongly I feel about the product.

Iago, I agree with you re pesticides and toxic food and water (and air). I read somewhere that women over the age of 75 had a much lower incidence of breast cancer when compared to following generations, b/c pesticides, radioactive fallout, and air pollution skyrocketed post WW II.

That being said--I'm a mostly organic girl and avoid most dairy; I'm lucky to live in a city that is relatively "clean", but our water has been tested and contains endocrine-hormone disruptors and even a trace is too much for my comfort level, so I use a Brita filter for my water.

But guess what all: my HAIR is beginning to grow in!  I have 5 more Taxol txs to go, but it's definitely downy on top of my head although white and soft, I don't mind--and growing in on the sides and back as well.  Although I still live with the terror of this disease every day, discovering that bit of news last week made me feel a little more light-hearted.  I can't stop feeling my head because it's so fun to know that my hair is coming back!

(I don't automatically include my dx because I don't want to be defined on this board by that, but for those of you here--dx 9/29.11, ILC, 2 c. 6/ll lymph nodes, grade 1 stage II,ER/PR + HER2-,AC DD, 5 more Taxol, 7 weeks rads and still on the fence about surgery.)

Clairenaz it is fun to touch it. My husband kept patting my head for about a year. Finally 1 year PFC my hair texture is pretty much back to normal and not puffy.

If you have your photos on photobucket, just right click and copy the image url and then paste it here under the tree.  I think that is right!

Lurker here, but always obsessed about the hair!  I am 10 months PFC and tomorrow I am going to wear my own hair to work for the first time.  I got it colored on Friday and am so glad I paid a professional.  I had been doing my own and it just never looked right.  The hairstylest did such a good job.  It looks just like my old color.  I just haven't been able to get myself to go to work without a wig because I teach and I just didn't want all the coments and questions from my students, so wish me luck that I don't chicken out tomorrow.

Missy, I had my hair straightened at a salon. The product was applied and left for 15 minutes then washed off. This was followed by application of a neutraliser that was left for 10 minutes then washed off. I am very happy with the result. The hair is soft and sits as I comb it. No styling required.

Claire, congratulations on growing hair. It is a great feeling but you still need patience. I am 42 weeks pfc and still have only 2 or 3 inches. Taking photos weekly, fortnightly or monthly is a good way to confirm it's growing when some weeks it doesn't seem to be.

Good luck Mammalou. I am also 10 months pfc. You should have enough hair and if you have it styled nicely I bet you get complimented.

Thanks Racy... I definitely have enough hair, but it is soooo curly, that I have been embarrassed by it.  I'll take the 45 min tomorrow to straighten it and style it and ease my way into going out with curls.  If they don't tame down, maybe I'll try the straightening like you.

    Dear all,

hubby says I have about 1/8" hair growth.  My hair did grow really fast before chemo, so I'm hoping for the same.  At any rate, I told myself I'd go topless more when my hair started growing, so I've gone topless 2x in a row at my bikram classes--and showed my director my new hair growth today in a faculty meeting. I don't think I can wait 10 months to wear my own hair..I guess I didn't since I've already worn it this week!

An oncologist at MD Anderson told me that 3 months past chemo I'd have enough hair that it would look like a short "pixie" (think Michelle Williams, the actress) hair style.  I hope she's right.

Ha! Pat the Bunny book! We had that book for my daughter when she was two...she's 29 now and I still remember it! Yep, I'm rubbing my head all the time now! It feels like a very hairy kiwi fruit Laughing

Claireinaz I went topless at 12 or 13 weeks. I dyed it the next day and it looked so much better. I got a lot more grey with chemo and what didn't turn grey turned black! I had dark brown not black. In the link the picture dated 4.19 was the day I went topless… the following morning I was at the hair salon getting dyed. My hair always grew quickly but I was on herceptin that slowed it down a little but not too badly:  linky

Claire, I hear you. I am 9 weeks WEEKS pfc and already scheming to ditch the hats. Today I bought a hat that does not cover the whole head and wore it out and about. May have freaked a few, but it felt good. If I still lived in NY, I would have ditched head covering a while back.

I think that expecting a short pixie 3 months PFC is a bit optimistic.  My hair has been growing pretty fast, I'm about 4 1/2 months PFC and I would just now call my "style" a short pixie.

Cath - take pictures every 2 or 3 weeks.  I am sure you'll see the progress.  Because I am coloring mine, I can really see the 1/2" or so growth every 4 weeks (I'm using a 28 shampoo product).   No matter, it never seems like it's growing fast enough!

cdairth, when did your hair actually start growing? Mine did not start till about seven weeks pfc so you need to 'discount' any weeks pfc before growth started. That is, when I was five months pfc I really only had three months of growth.

There is not much to do but be patient, maybe take Biotin, use Nioxin and massage your head. Prayer could help too!

I noticed a very slight shadow of growth at around 3 weeks PFC.  At almost 10 weeks now, I have a very scant 1/2 inch, but it does seem quite thick.  And gray, and dark - nowhere near the auburn red I used to have.  I also am having a terrible problem with dandruff.  Ugh.

I don't think I noticed anything until week 5 or 6 PFC and really it was nothing, It took a long time to sprout but it's growing nicely now.
