Good morning, Loungettes! Beautiful day shaping up here. I'm going to abandon housework and take the kayak out for the first paddle of the season! Going to my favorite spot, a bird sanctuary, very beautiful, I'll get to see osprey, herons, ducks, and all sorts of little birdies and big bugs. Hmm, reminds me that I need to dig out the bug repellent before I leave!

CynCyn--They really should give you something to mark the end of treatment! I remember my last day, I almost died when the tech said "see you tomorrow." turns out she just hadn't actually looked at my chart. . . Regarding sugar free stuff, the sugar substitute used in many of these is also used as a laxative. In one form it come in a bottle and has drug warnings, in candy it's just an item in the ingredient list. Gotta love the FDA's rules! The next several days are supposed to be beautiful, yeah!
Chrissy--I'd heard of Opa and Oma, but not Yaya. That is way cool info!
Chinese: NaiNai
Filipino: Lola
Flemish: Bomma
French: Grandmere
French Canadian: Mémé
German: Oma
Greek: YaYa
Hawaiian: Tutu
Hebrew: Savta
Italian: Nonna
Japanese: Oba-chan
Korean: Halmoni
Polish: Babcia
Portuguese: VoVo
Russian: Babushka
Spanish: Abuela
Yiddish: BubbeLika--every time the chemo thought pops into your head, mentally pop a fuikitol and after a little while you won't mind at all!

Mrs. Vino--I'm glad the staff recognized your last chemo treatment! That's the way it should be. But we do a better partay here in the HTL!.

Mema--I love how little ones create family names for grandparents, great grands, etc. Mema is sweet!

DorKable--I slept a lot better last night, got more energy today. Probably the massage made a difference. I've also rescheduled some of my meds when I was filling my pill boxes for the coming week, switching arimidex to bedtime, cutting back the claritin from 2 x a day to once a day, leaving the anticholesterol drug at Mon-Wed-Fri, put the melatonin back in. I hear you about not catching the OT memo at work, but there are times when work really needs to be second or even third place in your life, and right now sounds like one of those times for you. Don't forget you are still experiencing subtle effects of anesthesia and recovering from the physical, emotional and mental stress of surgery. As my counselor used to keep saying "Be kind to yourself!"
Bernie--I just about fell out of my chair! And the poor man didn't even know!
Here's to Cindie!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Wahine--garden and yard work, in fact any work around the house is very satisfying.

CynCyn--It's too bad the people at the rads place didn't recognize your accomplishment. We'll make up for it with the PARTAY here today!!!!!!

Someone from BCO posted FURB as her status for the day this am. I laughed out loud, really! After I figured it out, that is. . . .

Juliet--ah, just the prayer I need to remember sometimes! And congrats on finishing computer training! Must feel good to be free!

Wahine--Stella did you up well, now lets see how low YOU can go!

My grandma was "Nana", my mom was "Tutu" to her grandkids, then when the greatgrandkids came along, my Sis-IL thought it would be cute if my mom used G.G. (Gigi) for G'grandma. Aarrgghhhh.....very hard when all are present to refer to my mom as Tutu to my kids, but as GG to my gkids! My Son-IL's aunt from Korea that always lived with them here was called "Harmony"...didn't realize that is really the korean word for g'ma. Thanks, NM for that list!! My neighbor is called "Oma", since she's from Germany. Since my Mom and the X-BS used Tutu, I decided to just be plain ole "Grandma"....works for me!
What a g8 partay for CynCyn....and the beer and boobs pic was awesome Lori! NM, that butterfly pic "Be kind to yourself" was neat to stare at....it did weird things! THought it was going to be like one of those that changes into a diff pic, but it just moved around. OR is it cuz I am still tired and have jet-lag (and brain-lag?).
SO much to do today. Got to go window-shopping.....REALLY, have to shop for windows. Not fun, but to the critical point now. Our yard grew sooooo tall while we were gone, as there was lots of rain, and sun. THe furbabies were soooooo fercited to see us, as we were, to see them. Love all those doggie hugs and tail waggin. Hope my parents home here is OK too, as haven't been there to check, yet. Can I borrow Pants and Jock to help me today???? OR the wenches??? Whichever ones that don't mind cleaning??? Place is a wreck, but mostly from emptying the suitcases....even brought home 2 lg btls of Seagrams ($16 in Vegas, $24 here), and 3 btls of vino. Would've bought more Seagrams if had more room!
Awwwwww, how sweet.....Mr. Bigger just brought out a pitcher of NM's "No More Rads" dwinks.....yummmmmmmmm......housework/errands can wait!! Dwink Up!!!!
Hugsssssssss,

Good morning loungettes,
Well it is thirstdey and oh gawd, I so thirsty.
Princess Katie, take all the tenders you need, we have plenty to go around. You must really be exausted goil.
Lori, was so nice to see you at Cyndie's partay! I could not believe that it was you making an evening appearance in de lounge!!
NM, great post as always. Enjoyed the list of names for grand parents. I wanna be mema, it jest sounds so cute!
I am so freaking bored. Do you girls think planting some flowers would be too much for me? The ground is very soft and I jest need to do something productive. I am looking at all my empty flower pots and it is depressing.
Happy Flag day, I hope you are all displaying your flags proudly! I have mine lined up out front of my house and love the way they look. But they need company (flowers flowers flowers)!! I could use a tender myself to pull some weeds though. This just sucks. FURB, FU and your cousins too!!
cheers!

Thanks for the FLAG DAY reminder, Dorkie! Need to hang ours at the front porch. Not sure if planting will be too much for you, esp with the probs you are having. Might need to take it easy a few more days?????

Good morning Loungettes.....I still have 2 minutes to call it morning...wheww..just made it.
Thank you all for the stupendus partayy last night and sorry I pooped out on you all so early...I was just so tired...didnt seem like enough hours in yesterday. Oh, Heeyyyyyy who was da wise girl who made me all up to look like one of those bar wenches???? Kida cute if I do say so meeeeself!! I'll take one of dem DOTD No More Rads drinks!!
Bernie your cartoons have me rolling on the floor every day..the thong....lol..girl...ewwww lol. You know I was reading back a bit in the thread and I dont know why but I thought that the cottage you had the pics of was where you lived ...from reading tho I see that you inherited it. thats really neet .... seriously reminds me of fairy tails...especially over there where there are still queens and pricessses. Now tell me about the leprachauns.
Thanks NM again for all that info on the candy/laxitives ..so I suppose it didnt take much to finally come up with that laxitive that tastes like chocolate I guess. What a cool list of gramma names..I should have looked into it further when they got here ..its just everything was in such an uproar with xpb being the PB that she is and DS1 just moving into his first apartment and them getting settled and dealing with their bug problem (hence the reason they moved in here)..I just didnt have time for the little things and it was Christmas time to boot..It was just bad timeing.
Nice to see you Lori and yes that was Kenny...how the heck did Stella get her butt in that one? How are things coming along?
Kathy...I can imagine you have a ton to do now that you are back from your vaca...now you need a vaca from the vaca...Im sure the tenders will gladly help you out with that and maybe a few wenches also...they do have their hands full with my nattys tho..but I can ask them to put them right on down in front of me..they wont get wasted.
Nice to see you Chrissy all cumfy in your chair..glad you could stop in for a few. Hows it going down under..?? Why do they call it that anyway? Do you have wild kangaroos and Koala bears there? I heard Kangaroos were mean...Curious minds want to know.
Dorty girl...thank you so much for such a lovely time last night..you sure know how to have fun and throw a partay..!! I say plant some flowers..sounds like a really relaxing thing to do..I just wouldnt go mowing the lawn and digging holes with a spade or anything like that. Its too bad your missing out on that OT at work...I can relate..I hate it when they offer ot and for no fault of my own I cant make it. Seems for me that its allways offered at times when Im allready working..not fair!
Sue, you still busy there with the gk's...or did they go home? Or are they going home today?
Allie, I saw you pop your head in at the partay last night.....I didnt last long myself.
I'll catchya all later...no rads but still busy busy.

Don't do leprachauns - tourist stuff.
Proper irish - the Banshee, who is supposed to be a fairy woman (bean, woman; sidhe, fairy) is said to wail and cry when members of certain families are about to die. It has never been established, however, why this ghostly creature follows some families.
In Old Gaelic legend, music and poetry were said to be fairy gifts and the possession of these was said to show a fatal kinship with the 'Duine Shee', or people of the spirit race.
Carolan, the great Irish harper - so runs the story - obtained some of the wildest and most beautiful music through hearing the fairy harpers play while lying asleep in the moonlight on a fairy mound.
The Banshee is believed to be an unearthly attendant on the ancient families of Ireland, the true descendants of the noble Gaelic race - those who have the Mac and O to their names - for:
By Mac and O
You'll always know
True Irishmen they say'.
But if they lack
The O and Mac,
No Irishmen are they'.And the families with the old names of the chieftains of the Gaels, such as the O'Neills, the O'Donnells, the O'Connors, the O'Learys, the O'Tools and the O'Connaghs, each had their banshee whose cry, when heard by any of them, was a forewarning of death.
In Ireland, those persons who have the gifts of music and song are, it is said, watched over by the spirits; one the Spirit of Life, which is prophecy, such persons are said to be 'fey' and to have the gift of the second sight; the other, the Spirit of Doom, which is the reveler of secrets of misfortune and death, and for this dread messenger another name is the Banshee.
The wail of the Banshee is a peculiarly mournful sound that resembles the melancholy sound of the hollow wind, and having the tone of the human voice, and is distinctly audible at a great distance.
She is usually presented as a small though beautiful maiden, dressed in the fashion of Ireland's early ages who, with her mournful and melancholy cry, bewails the misfortune about to fall on the family she loves.
It has been stated by some writers that the Banshee was actuated by a feeling inimic to the person lamented. This, however was not the opinion of the people of an earlier day in Ireland.
Their belief was that the Banshee was the friend of the family she followed, that she at one period enjoyed life and walked the earth in the light and shadow of loveliness and immortality.
The very fact of the unearthly creatures always crying their sweet, sad song of sorrow at some misfortune bears this out, for if otherwise than a friend, why should her song not be one of rejoicing instead of lamentation? When the caoine of the Banshee was heard in the vicinity of the house of any old Gaelic family, it was at once felt that misfortune or death awaited some member of it.
Instances have been quoted of every member of a family having been in vigorous health when the cry of the Banshee was first heard, but before a week had elapsed someone had been accidentally drowned or killed or had met sudden death in some fashion.
It is well to remember that the Banshee belongs exclusively to the Celtic race. She is never heard bewailing the approaching demise of any member of the other races composing the population of Ireland.
My old family name is O'Meagher

Wow, interesting stuff, Bernie! I had heard the term "banshee" but had NO idea what it meant. And funny about leprechauns being for tourists. Really enjoyed reading about the fairies, and the banshee. My DH's moms name was McBride, so he feels like he can claim to be Irish!
A bit (wee bit, lol) like our legends in HI of Madame Pele (volcano goddess) and menehunes. We REALLY respected Madame Pele and when you would take raw pork on a drive over the Pali (esp at night), your car would stall. Of course, we all had to try that one!!!! Not sure if my date "pretended" the car stalled, or if it happened for real. I have heard of people that saw an old hitchhiker at night with long white hair. IF they didn't pick her up, she would end up in their car anyway, in the back seat, and be Madame Pele. Weird. Also, if you took home some lava (away from Hawaii), then bad luck was supposed to befall you, thanks to Pele. The menehunes would do deeds at night, like GOOD deeds. That is how "Menehune Fish Pond" was created, supposedly at night. Menehune defination from wikipedia...
In Hawaiian mythology, the Menehune [pronounced meh-neh-HOO-neh] are said to be a people, sometimes described as dwarfs in size, who live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. Their favorite food is the maiʻa (banana), but they also like fish. The Menehune were said to be superb craftspeople. Legends say that the Menehune built temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. They are said to have lived in Hawaiʻi before settlers arrived from Polynesia many centuries ago.

During the famine years here 1845 - 1849, my father's side of the family were evicted and my whatever far back grandmother, husband had died. She went to live in a cave on a mountain, not far from where I live. Sliabh na mban - Slievenamon (Mountain of the Women).
She survived and raised her children and became known as the local wise women. Living off the land, midwife and god only knows what else. She seemly knew all about the old ways of healing and was a renowned musician and very spiritual.
Down through the family line it has always been the women that are the strongest, right until my father all the men died young and tragically.
Even though I live in Kilkenny (my mother's side of the family). My father's family are from Tipperary - the border is only a mile from me. I am very close to all of my father's side of the family.
We are also known as Seanchaí
Seanchaithe were servants to the chiefs of the tribe and kept track of important information for their clan. They were very well respected in their clan. The seanchaithe made use of a range of storytelling conventions, styles of speech and gestures that were peculiar to the Irish folk tradition and characterized them as practitioners of their art. Although tales from literary sources found their way into the repertoires of the seanchaithe, a traditional characteristic of their art was the way in which a large corpus of tales was passed from one practitioner to another without ever being written down.
Because of their role as custodians of an indigenous oral tradition, the seanchaithe are widely acknowledged to have inherited - although informally - the function of the filí of pre-Christian Ireland.
Some seanchaithe however were not part of a clan, some were itinerants, traveling from one community to another offering their skills in exchange for food and temporary shelter. Others were members of a settled community and might be termed "village storytellers" who told their stories and tales at ceremonies and community events, similar to the servant Seanchaithe0 -
Bernie, that is SO awesome.....explains why you are so wise! What an amazing history. Is there anyway to find out what *great-great* or *great-great-great* grandma that was? Did anyone write down your family history, or is it still passed down orally? I hope you are writing it all down....I am going to print out what you wrote. I was amazed while we were in Ireland, how much history there is, and that so many people we met knew so much of their history. So many dates and places, and names, and Irelanders (?) are very proud of their heritage and know it so well. I love what you have shared with us! I didn't realize the famine was that long ago. Wasn't there also one in the 1900's? When so many imigrated to the US?

Bernie - really interesting! thanks for sharing! I might have mentioned I'm of the Stewart clan from Scotland...my ancestors came to the US a loooooong time ago.
Kathy - I remember reading about Pele and not taking lava rocks or anything...that has kept me also from taking rocks or shells anywhere just in case there are other such taboos, really interesting stories...how funny your date stalled the car!
Still pages behind, but so good to see you dolls here at the bar!!! I'm ready for Thirst-day Pau Hana!!

What incredible stories...I had allways heard of Banshee but I never knew the meaning behind any of it...explains a lot. And your family history Bernie is amazing. Like Kathy said hope its all documented somewhere. I wonder how far you could get in a geneology serch on ancestory.com or something. I used to watch that show "Who do You Think You Are" that followed various celeb's on a path to find their ancestors and seems like almost every time it went back to Europe somewhere. My biological father is a Foley so I guess he isnt from true Irish heritage. Kathy , your story about Menehune is fascinating also and remembering what you had said about the yukulale. My uncle got into that Acestry stuff pretty heave and we are mostly German and related somehow to Atilla the Hun..figures. Oh but also one Pope....So I guess that makes up for the other. Sounds like Chrissy is decended from a true Irish family. That makes me wonder..what are some traditional Austrailian last names?
KEWL to see You Bean....I'll have a dwink with ya...

Funny about Aussie names, but aren't most of them from England or other places that were ruled by the Queen? My g'pa on dads side was from OZ, but was English, with an english last name. Chrissy, yeah, are there any typical Aussie names???
Funny Cyn, about being related to Atilla the Hun! When we have a really aggressive hummingbird, I always call it "Atilla the Hum". But yeah, the Pope thing is cool too....does balance it out!!! LOL.
