Monica, forgot to congratulate you on your new KitchenAid!  You will love it!

Thinking of all of you who are in the deep freeze. We had mild temps today with rain, so most of the snow is gone...and now the temp is crashing, so we'll be cold once again!

Spent a couple of hours at the gym this afternoon (DH and I have been enjoying a stretching class after our regular workouts...feels so wonderful!), and we left at rush hour so got stuck in tons of traffic. I had to rush dinner since he has a committee meeting tonight, so quickly cooked up some butternut squash ravs from Traders, with a white sauce, accompanied by a baby spinach, pear and red onion salad. I had planned to have two ravs.....but I was puzzled by a certain taste I could not identify until I ate SEVEN of them! ;)   I now think it was an almond flavor....but still not sure and the container label is out in the cold trash bin. Will have to buy them again to have on hand for a quick dinner....and to check out the ingredients. ;)

Monica, hope you are loving your new Kitchen Aid! Maybe you can post a pic of your pumpkin yeast bread? I have never see a recipe for that......

Speaking of mixers, I received a scraper mixing blade for Christmas .....must make something to test it out, but I really do not want tasty stuff around, too much temptation! :)

  • Seaside, we leave from New Orleans on Thursday at 7 pm and fly to LA.  From there to Brisbane.  We return on Feb. 5.  I can hardly believe I'm making this trip since I don't like to travel on planes, but I've always wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand.  A golfing friend and her husband booked this trip.  One day at lunch last spring, she asked me if my dh and I would like to go along.  At first, I said no but we ended up deciding to go.  I'm getting excited.  This is the first trip dh and I have ever taken where everything is planned and we'll be touring with a group.   Usually we wing it on our own.   The company is Collette Vacations.

Bedo, we're all enjoying your Alaska adventure vicariously.

It's supposed to drop down to the "teens" tonight.  It was cold and windy today.  The fountain outside my dermatologist's office was quite beautiful with long icicles fringing two tiers.  All the patients, including me, were taking phone pics!

Moon, I bought a Kitchen Aid a couple of years ago and I love it.  There are so many nifty attachments you can buy, too.

Oh, that is so exciting Carol!! Maybe we should start a "here's a pic of may vacation discussion, lol)

Please let us know of any interesting food Down Under.

Lacey, that butternut squash sounds divine! I'm having left over soup for dinner Ha

Moon, how do you make corn chowder?

Nance and all, I hope you are all well with the freezing weather. That is really scary and I worry about people who have never experienced it or are not ready for it.

I'll sign off. Work all the time 10 hours today, which doesn't sound like much, but I can't pace it, I have to take things as they come.

    Happy Monday to all

Snuggling with my Upstairs Dog.(Landlords) we both needed it.  Plus playing with an old sock tied in a knot

Took some Perdue boneless chicken, onions, small potatoes, carrots, celery, mini penne and made a chicken stew with lots of dried herbs from my garden.  Boy am I full. My sister is temporarily living with me until she can find a place of her own.  At least I am not alone.

Pic of Port Washington Lighthouse today at -18. By Ozaukee Magazine Liz Decker

deborye! That pic was mean. LOL.  It warmed up to -10 today! A couple of places lost power too. But not us! That stew sounds good.

I had spaghetti with meat sauce it sounded so good yesterday! LOL

Corn chowder is whatever you put in. But for me I'm using the leftovers mashed potatoes, corn, ham and adding some cooked carrots, onions and whatever else I want to throw in. Maybe a strip of cooked bacon for more flavor but I'll use up a lot of leftovers. Then make bean soup with the ham bone. Gonna be eating a lot of soup.

Well they canceled my eye dr apt. Also my Live Strong program. Schools too. Then they had people throwing boiling water into the air to watch it freeze in the air. Also bubbles were frozen. Kinda cool! You can see some on the internet. There fun to watch. That's what happens at -18.

I'll post a pic when I make the bread.

Much love. Stay warm and safe!

Not nice for me to moan about the cold - but for Houston 20 is frigid.  Most people are running a water drip so the pipes don't freeze so the pressure is low.  (our pipes are either in our attics or under a crawl space for buildings up on blocks).  Hope those of you who are 'buried' w/snow are all OK.

I spent the evening sorting through my huge recipe box (at least 4x a regular one).  Interesting to see how my tastes & cooking preferences have changed over the years.  Part of it is living in Houston.  I don't turn on the oven except in the middle of winter & I often have to run the air conditioning even then.  Eric & Carole can understand.  A lot is the availability of fresh foods that were unheard of when I first married.  Iceburg was the only lettuce and veggies were canned - frozen veggies were just beginning to appear in the stores.  Casseroles were pretty much all we could afford.  One of my son's favorites was a hot dog, slit for a slice of cheese & rolled in crescent rolls then baked.  I haven't thought about that one in ages.  Lots thrown away and I still have 3/4 of the box to go - then the huge 12x15 envelope stuffed w/recipes I've clipped from somewhere.  Bittersweet to find recipes in my Mother's handwriting.

Bedo - love the adventures & the pictures.  Deborye - I agree.  No fair!!!

Minus, I know what you mean about how bittersweet it is to find one's mom's written recipes....and my mother had beautiful handwriting, making those perfectly written cards really special.

Really Deb?  You like torturing us?  I want my Carolina Home!!!!  Everything closed around us today, but I still have to go to work.  We did not get the blizzard but are in a deep, deep freeze.  I have been asked to assist at another clinic that we just opened and they need help getting settled in, so I will go there early then on to my regular job.  Hope the car can handle the cold.

Will do up some chicken tenders and have them ready for a chicken Caesar salad when I get home tonight.  Soup sounds like the way to go though or maybe take out.

It's supposed to be down to the low 40F degree range tonight and about 70F for today's high temp.

It was -11 last night but it's up to 0 right now. Heat wave!

I need something to warm up this house. Yes, heat is on & working but thermostat on 68. Brrr. I found a turkey breast I bought b4 Thanksgiving - more like a gigantic chicken breast. I actually think it's 1/2 a breast. Thawed it overnight in refrig. and going to put in oven with butter, Parm. cheese, basil and dill. Foil baked. I know it's late but DH won't be home until after 9 more likely closer to 10. Think mac/cheese with it and hopefully some broccoli in freezer. Then I need to do dishes - yuck. I have a stack of plastic containers that can't go in dishwasher.

    How is everyone holding out?

  • We are establishing new low highs on the northshore (north shore of Lake Ponchartrain).  It was only in the 30's today.  Tonight we'll have another hard freeze and then it will start warming up.  You should hear all the grumbling!

I made a navy bean soup today with ham, chopped carrot, celery and  onion and canned tomatoes.  It was good but would have been better with some  spinach or other type of greens thrown in.  We also had another good green salad with blue cheese.

  • Susan, DH and I are making a batch of the meyer lemon marmalade, following the instructions of the recipe in Epicurius.  We had five lemons left and they weighed 2 lbs rather than the 1 1/2 lbs specified in the recipe.  But we sliced up the 2 lbs.  He loves marmalade.

The turkey breast was delicious. Surprise it was boneless. Made the price per # a little easier to bear. I think I will try the foil cooking with chicken breasts and some dry Italian seasoning - homemade Good Seasons mix or maybe some rosemary powder, butter and flour. House smells wonderful. Cheated and made Velveeta mac/cheese. Enough turkey leftover for at least one more night and possibly 2.

OK I will confess I receive wayyy too many recipe emails daily. But I got the new launch of Yahoo Food and it scrolls forever. I have to read some of the tabs I've opened b4 I can consider opening more. Guess I know what will be late afternoon reading today.

Hope all are having a good Wednesday. Carole I guess you are in the last stages of packing. WooHoo!

Chicken and rice wIth broccoli tonight (new recipe). Not very exciting, but I did get my hg king Arthur flour today, so I'll start a new batch of bagels tomorrow. They probably won't get finished until Saturday because Friday I'm going to my favorite Italian grocer in st. Louis. Looking forward to some house made canneloni and olives of all kinds dipped out of big white buckets. The smell of cheeses, salamis, garlic and oregano greets you with a big smelly kiss when you walk in the door. Can't wait.

mmmm Nancy- that big kiss sounds wonderful!

Tonight was tacos.  Very boring but good.  I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow and stock up.  I am planning on FINALLY getting everything to make the minestrone soup!  I am excited!  Tomorrow at 3 DH goes in for a vasectomy. The poor thing is scared to death!  On the upside, because he is so nervous he has asked his father to deal with the kids for tomorrow and Friday, as he is afraid they will hurt him.  I am psyched!  2 days of no kids??  A DH on pain killers being a baby...I can handle that!  Tonight as he was being a baby about it I pointed out that in the course of three years I had 2 c sections, a BMX and recon surgery and still took care of the kids!  But I thanked him for his paranoia and the break I am about to have :)  So I will make him soup and he and I can watch movies in bed.  Sounds like heaven to me!

    Perhaps I being insensitive?

I accompanied two different friends to their vasectomies. It was very interesting to say the least. They're pretty protective of the "family jewels" lol!

  • Nancy, the Italian grocery sounds like a delightful place to visit.  Kind of like Central Grocery in the French Quarter in NO which claims to have made the original muffaleta sandwich.

Susan, the meyer lemon marmalade turned out really good.  DH did much of the preparation.  I'm not a big marmalade fan and I liked this marmalade because it is tart and not cloyingly sweet.

Our last night at home for a while.  We went out to dinner with the couple who will be travelling companions.  By this time tomorrow night we should be on a plane headed to Los Angeles.

Laurie, hope everything goes well with your dh's surgery.

Carol, it's very much like Central Grocery, only bigger.

    Carole, have a wonderful trip!

Laurie, just keep lots of ice packs nearby for DH and  he'll be fine. Ingenious idea to get childcare for the boys since you will both benefit! :)

DH was out tonight so I had not much of a dinner....peach greek yogurt with walnuts and chia seeds, and a vegetable, fruit smoothie to which I added hemp seed, my newest mail order grain ingredient.  If I were a singleton, I would frequently eat like that! Felt filling enough, but I may be craving meat tomorrow!

Laurie:  Children gone is a wonderful idea.  When my DH had his vasectomy, the hardest thing was to keep the 4 year old from jumping on Dad to wrestle in the bed.  Hope surgery went well.  And I don't think you're being insensitive at all!!  What a great break for you.

Carole:  I know you'll have a super trip.  Looking forward to hearing from you off & on.

Good luck with your DH, Laurie! I hope you can enjoy the no kid time at least a bit.

Carole, you must be getting excited! Fill us in when you can.

Lacy every now and the I just have a bowl of cereal for supper. It works! LOL

Nance on top of everything else you made bagels???? LOL

Luvmygoats, you will have to find the weirdest recipe and post it for us.

Today I went to noodles. Had Bangkok curry dish. it's not very hot. Sauce is thin bur it was good enough with a chicken breast. it was good just to get out of the house. I went to jewelry class and had to get cat food so even though it was only 5 degrees I went out.  I read that you guys in NOLA and South Carolina had single digits too. That hirrible. We at least have lots of winter clothing and expect that but wow. What a pain for you ! The kids finally went back to school Today So THAT Was GOOD FOR THE Mom's Around here. LOL

    Much love.

laurie - if you have not already, get some bags of frozen peas - they make great ice packs and are moldable for the vasectomy location.  Get a few so you can swap out the bags - just throw them back in the freezer and re-use them again for the next icing.  This was recommended for my DH's vasectomy and it worked great.  FYI - he was a baby about it too - no surprise.

Laurie:  men do not handle these things well...that's why women have babies and do all the caregiving...lol!   I'm sure he will be fine...these are routine surgeries now, and you will get a much needed break, not to mention a worry free future..lol!

Last night we had the leftover steak and potatoes from the five star restaurant meal the night before...at least my BF did.  I had leftover turkey taco meat on a salad.  I don't like eating red meat too often whereas he will eat it every day if allowed.

Another rainy day in S. Florida but at least it's not snow!  Stay warm everyone!

My sister made a huge crock pot of spaggetti sauce with meatballs and 3 different types of sausages.  Guess what we will be eating for awhile.

I think tonight is enchiladas. Have corn tortillas I need to use up. I cheat and use a Wolf chili recipe. I still can't find a canned/jarred enchilada sauce I like. Pace had one that did not sell well that I loved. I do have a jar of Frontera sauce in there but DH liked the Wolf ones and asked for them. Still have just a bit of turkey left too. Umm may have a snack b4 dinner. I plan tomorrow during the rain we're supposed to get to dig down the freezer again and start cooking up stuff down there, including that whole chicken I keep avoiding. She may just get boiled and frozen in bits. So far I have avoided getting out this week at all. Think I will make it last until Sunday for SS/church.

Uhh Deborye - I could sure use some meatballs and sauce. Yum looking.
