Looks yummy, Deb! Oh, to have a sister here cooking for me! :)

Speaking of sisters, mine seems to be doing fine in her primitive VT barn/house...except for the rainy day earlier this week when she ended up with lots of water in the huge basement. She is prepping for the next anticipated warm up  with hay bales and sand bags (which her township provides...very nice!) to keep the cellar dry. Hope it works to get her through the winter and spring. She says that her entire property is a huge skating rink right now. I suspect Monica and Carrie have the same in their northern reaches!   What a crazy winter we are having!

In DH's effort to clear out our freezer, (his motivation is to get a new fridge/freezer since ours is over twenty years old with intermittent struggling... and we have soooo much in the freezer)he unearthed some lamb burgers for dinner. I took a long errand walk during which I picked up some enhancements for the burgers, (I really do love being able to do most of my errands on foot these days....even in the cold, if bundled,....like stopping at Walgreens for some skin cream, the travel agency  to pick up some ideas for our Italy trip, and the food store for a few dinner items...and when you are on foot, you don't overbuy!). When I returned home, my neighbor called to say that she just made a boatload of soup she hoped to share with us. Well, why not depart from my kale soup first course staple! So for dinner DH grilled the lamburgers while I put together the add ons, and a salad and dressing, and we first enjoyed my neighbor's sausage corn wild rice soup.....it was really yummy!

Warm thoughts going out to all......

Oh Deborye! Yum. Looks so good. . Lacy doing a search of the deep freeze can be scary! My D H does that every now and then. But i won't let him toss 2 bottles I have of my breast milk I froze for my baby. You know, the one who's 28! LOL! Nance what makes the pork chops Vietnamese? And Lzurie, Specialk is right. Peas are the best ice pack. Just remember you won't want to eat them after your done...... LOL

Tonite I had a turkey sandwich. Nothing special. Canned soup. I just didn't want to go out. Even though It warmed up to a whole 20 degrees,  just too lazy. Tomorrow I'm going out with a friend so I'll share then. Much love to all.

Monica, this particular version calls for thick chops marinated in a mixture of fish sauce, brown sugar, shallot,

rice vinegar and lime juice. They're then sauteed for about 4 minutes on each side. Other versions call for lemongrass.

Lacey- I love the imagery of your errands.  Also yum to dinner and you have to love good neighbors!  When do you go to Italy?

Carol- I know you have said but when do you leave for your trip again?

Dh is doing just find with his pain meds and frozen peas.  He took the meds prior to the procedure as he was told.  We were in the waiting room and he takes my hand and says " You have been a great wife."  I asked him if one of us was dieing?  He says no- just wanted to tall me.  (weird?)  So a few minutes later I ask him if he is still nervous.  He says no- the pills have him feeling really good.  LOL!!!  He was soooo relaxed. It was all pretty funny.  We will see how he feels tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will have no kids and my only plans are to make the minestrone soup and take a nap.  Ha!!

Hope everyone had a great day:)

Laurie - good to take compliments wherever we can find them.  Carole left today.

Moon - I love this - breast milk in the freezer?  That's almost like cleaning out my Mother's house after she died when I was 60 and finding she'd saved full sets of baby teeth from each of us kids

Lacey - I was just thinking how much I loved walking to do errands when my son was a baby & we lived in Albuquerque. I really miss that but Houston is not a walking friendly town.

Nance - thanks for the chop marinade.  I was going to ask too.

Luv - I've found several store brand sauces I really like at HEB & Central Market - particularly the green chili.  Do you have an HEB anywhere on your route?

Popcorn for dinner.  Thinking of Bedo in front of a fireplace w/popcorn & apple slices.

Laurie, hopefully hubby's discomfort is calming down.    I remember a conversation between my cousin (a doctor) and Mickey (studying to be a doctor).    The first time the two of them met was right after he had just finished doing a vasectomy.  His comment was that the anatomy books were all wrong about the vas deferens..that, despite it's location, it was most certainly attached to a man's chin.  He said that during the procedure, he would carefully "tug" on the vas deferens to make sure he had it..and every time he tugged, the man's chin would move downward.

Moon, I can't say anything like that was in our freezer when we cleaned it out (pulled in the trash can and threw it all away) due to freezer failure.

Lacey, I love walking to the grocery store. The way the city zoning regulations are set up, it's almost impossible for commercial establishments to be within what most people consider would be walking distance of their home...and the place isn't that walking friendly...so everyone drives.

And Deb, that spaghetti sauce looks good.

I'm off work today....more house cleaning and about 5 hours from now, I'm taking DD to the driver license place to take her driving test so she can (!) get her driving license.....Singing  The insurance companies say this is one of the worst places in the country for staged wrecks.......sigh.....so the insurance rates are *high*...and, in my case, going *way* up......

Congrats Eric and Sharon. And sympathy! LOL.  Yeah. Now you worry a lot more. Up here we have graduated rules for newbie drivers. Only one other person in the car. But my kids had to promise not to use the radio for the first month too. Also we made all our four change a tire at our house before they could take the car the first time. Just so they would know how and not be stranded. (My DH would never pay for triple A. )  insurance really does go up though. Good luck and Much love.

    Carol safe trip!

Laurie - Hope your DH is recovering without incident. Yay for 2 days no kids. Minestrone sounds good.

Eric - the insurance may go up but you will pay less with a DD. I still think there is some incentive for good grades too but has been awhile for us (DD is 26.5 now) so could certainly be wrong. Why is AZ so bad for staged wrecks? Monica - I forgot about the graduated license. Yes, we have that too. DD tried to change a tire once, but it had been put on with automatic wrench and she couldn't budge it. She does check her tire pressures and fills them up if needed.

MinusTwo - I've looked at Central Market, not found anything but then I'm a wimp on hotness. There is an HEB but in Burleson, south of FW. Just googled 50 miles. But I do need to go visit the cemetery where my DM's buried which is down past that. Looks like we're getting a stretch of good weather. Maybe next week.

The enchiladas did not get made. DH came home earlier than I anticipated. Ate last of turkey, made good brown rice, froz. broccoli and biscuits. We're going to clean out storage closet in a bit. Oh joy. Major rearranging. Good day to do it - rainy but nicely warmer.

AZ has the graduated license as well and the restrictions are similar to those in the other states.

The staged wrecks are probably common in most large cities..so I don't think it's an Arizona only thing.  Still, here we tend to drive a lot. Getting 30,000 miles per year on a car isn't unusual, so it's also just a "exposed more often, and longer, to the threat" type of thing.

Sharon and I both have CDLs and she trained drivers.  Still, we had a driving school teach DD part way through to make sure we weren't missing something or teaching her wrong...and to give her a chance to drive while someone else watched.  She has  3.4 GPA , so between that and the paid driving school, we've got all the discounts covered.

Moon...We think alike. DD had to do change a tire on each of the cars here as well.  Her standing by the road, crying, waiting for some guy to come rescue her because she doesn't know what to do...is not acceptable.   :-)

Well, off to motor vehicles to do the test.  I washed the windows for her and gave the car a "pre-trip inspection" like a driver is supposed  to do for a big truck before taking it out on the road.  If any lights, windshield wiper, horn, etc. aren't working they won't allow the test to continue.

Eric - best of luck to DD and to you to on your new adventures. Sure know about the driving miles.

Eric- Congrats to your daughter, she must be very excited.  Glad you have all the discounts covered!  I am impressed that you taught her to change a tire too!

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and thoughts on DH.  He is doing just fine.  I have not seen him sit still this long in my life!  He is usually a very restless guy who has to be on the go all the time.  (unlike me!  I like my quiet time.)  He does not seem to have too much discomfort and is enjoying being spoiled.  He is already talking about going to a friends to watch the Patriots game tomorrow night and sleeping over.

I made the minestrone soup today.  It is excellent!!  Thank you so much...I think it is Nancey's recipe?  It is very flavorful.  DH and I had it for lunch with some garlic bread sticks.  I don't think he cared for it as there is no meat in it.  to quote  "It's good but where is the sausage?"  Apparently he thought there was sausage in minestrone soup?  My DB girlfriend isn't feeling well so I brought them some as well.

Tonights dinner will be Bulogi- the pork medalions with sauce and pineapple over rice.  DS1 will be psyched as it is one of his favorites,

Laurie, sounds like you are taking good care of DH during his recovery. I actally broke out laughing after reading your response to his  pre-op declaration. I could just picture you saying that with a quizzical look and it struck me as so funny! I'm sure the Pat's game will motivate him to push through any residual pain!

Apropro of our recent posts about connections with grown kids, DS2 texted DH this week to ask if he wanted to go to the Pat's game with him and his crew of friends. Then, when he heard it would be raining (but fortunately, not freezing!) for the whole game (and tailgating time) he gave DH the chance to opt out, but my DH would rarely wimp out of anything due to weather....so off they will go....and I get to happily watch the drenched fans from the warm/dry family room. Actually that makes me think....I can make them some tasty cookies for their tailgating and it gives me a chance to use my new kitchen aid mixer blade, while not having to have any high caloric "product" in the house! :)

Hope the driving test went well, Eric. My two sons had such different approaches to that process...DS1 was dying to drive, and called every single day to be sure he could get the earliest possible test date. He finally succeeded and it snowed on that day...he actually took his test in the snow storm! DS2 was way more relaxed about the whole thing, maybe because DS1 was usually willing and able to drive him whereever. Definitely a family milestone, Eric. Congratulations!

We couldn't do the test today...While we were waiting, someone had a wreck on the adjoining street and blocked the parking lot..... and they quit doing tests for the day.

    sigh.....

    OH bananas Eric....so frustrating!

Laurie  Now is the time (while he is under the influence) to take the credit card and run!  LOL Was totally laughing at his comment to you...probably felt like he was going in front of the firing squad.  My BIL just had this done and he had an allergic reaction to the metal clips and his "stuff" swelled to the size of huge grapefruits....no kidding...I saw them!  In spite of all the ice...he could not walk for a week. When he finally made an appearance in public, they still barely fit in his shorts....boy did we have fun at his expense!  never seen anything like it in all my nursing career.

Anyways....staying home tonight, leftover something for dinner. Maybe popcorn.

Carrie, I feel badly roaring with laughter at your poor BIL's experience. Might not want to tell too many guys in line about that!   Popcorn sounds good!

That's too bad for DD, Eric. How frustrating!

My brother was circumcised as an adult. Turned out he was allergic to the iodine they used to swab the incision.   Looked like he had a third thigh.  Could only wear sweats for a couple of weeks.  His wife was not happy.

Carrie not funny but it is! LOL.  We couldn't help laughing when my brother and DH spilled a pot of coffee on their laps. Even though they did get burned there were snickers all the way to the ER. Not to mention the effect when they had to explain at the ER. Not nice.... i had to give the nurses credit. They didn't smile even once but they did look like they were trying not to sneeze.

Eric that's dissapointments for you DD too. Not to mention nerve wracking.

    Much love.

laurie - my DH was hilarious on the valium they gave him for his vasectomy - because he was active duty military at the time and on flying status he was never allowed to take much in the way of medication other than Tylenol or Advil - so he had never taken valium - he insisted that he could drive home from the procedure!  Not!  He had a colonoscopy a few years ago, was the same way - DD had to take him because I had a consult at the same time for a tumor in my calf, and she was mortified because he was like an extremely happy drunk and kept asking to fill out a customer service survey because everyone at the medical center was so great he wanted management to know.  She kept saying "dad, come on we have to get in the car..."

We're on vacation in Whitefish, MT~~~skiing and relaxing before next week's lumpectomy. We ate at my favorite restaurant last night. I had blackened salmon salad, with organic mixed greens, blue cheese, grapes, apples, roasted pecans and citrus vinagrette. It was delicious. DH had chicken fried steak, smashed Yukon gold potato and Mac & cheese. They are known for their homemade pies, many with huckleberries, but I had chocolate pie and he had coconut cream.

Today is our last day here, so while DH skies in heavy snow and howling winds, I'm headed into town to shop and have lunch at a little cafe. I already know I'm going to order a BLAT~~~bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato on homemade wheat toast!

We've skied a lot and enjoyed the spectacular scenery. It's been nice to get away before next week's reality. We've gotten 24" of snow on the mountain since Tuesday!

Best to all, with and without testicular issues! Gina

In spite of foot high piles of snow on the city streets and pouring down rain on top of all that, yesterday's trip to the Italian grocer was great fun.  The advantage to it being such a crappy day was that there were few shoppers, an advantage because the aisles in the store are narrow and loaded with displays of olive oils, wines  and assorted goodies.  I came away with 10 pounds of high gluten flour, an array of imported and domestic cheeses such as Gorgonzola dolce and scamorza (a superb pizza cheese), a large container of mixed olives marinated in olive oil and garlic,  a freshly baked loaf of Italian bread (still warm), some orriechiette  (I need to learn how to make this), San Marzano tomatoes, house made veal and spinach cannelloni,  a package of fresh pizza dough, and 4 cannolis.  The pizza dough and cannolis were picked up at the Missouri Baking Company where I also got one of my all time favorite cookies, cuccidati.  It was a good day.  Several years ago, Mario Batali in conjunction with the Food Network I believe, visited The Hill, the south St. Louis Italian neighborhood where these places are located, and Missouri Baking Company in particular.  He participated in the making of the cuccidati and I think he even had a Christmas dinner with the family who owns the bakery.

Despite all of my Italian riches, tonight's dinner is Curried Beef and noodles and Spicy Sugar Snap Peas. This is because I've been making bagels and cinnamon bread all day, and the  beef could be relegated to the slow cooker. The cinnamon bread is a new, and rather labor intensive recipe.  It had better be as good or better than the one I've been using because it took up a lot of my time today. These loaves are destined for friends.  I did make pizza last night with the pizza dough and scamorza.

It's nearly 40 degrees and sunny today, much of the snow is melted. We're supposed to be above freezing all week and tomorrow is to be near 50!  I'm celebrating with a pedicure!  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

gina - good luck with your surgery - glad you had some fun beforehand.

Wow, Nance, what a trip! The only translation I need is cuccidati (?). Enjoy your culinary loot! Yummmmm!

Gina, I am also happy for you that you had such a wonderful vacation before the lumpectomy. Your mention of the  BLAT makes me really hungry for one!

My crew of two are down in Foxborough getting ready to dodge raindrops and thunderstorms at the Pat's game. I'M deciding what to eat .......hmmmmm so far, some cheddar cheese on crackers with pepper jelly.....and later, maybe popcorn! :)

Nancy - have just googled some recipes. I love figs in anything. Do you perhaps have a favorite recipe that might be easy, peasy??? Sounds like a wonderful shopping trip. I've not been out of the house all week, no where to go esp.

Lacey - I hope you have dry clothes/warm blankets ready for the football warriors. Have it on here on TV.

Gina - best of luck with next week's surgery. What day are you having it?

Oh nance sounds great. Lacey is there something about popcorn we don't know??? LOL

Tonight DH took me out to eat. The only thing interesting was the Berkshire pork chop. Yum. Grilled , tender and juicy. But OMG was it fatty. but good. Did I mention it was good? LOL.  The loin area was so tender. I had to stop myself from picking up the bones and Sucking on them. Charred fat.... lots of it. LOL There's a theme going on here. Hmm. Christmas party was ham. Neighborhood party was pulled pork. Dinner out was pork chop. What mineral or enzyme does pork have that I'm craving? went through this one time before and all I wanted was steak. At that time I was anemic and didn't know it. Strange. LOL.

Luv, this is very similar to the recipe I use

They are a pain to make, which is why I get excited when I find them in the bakery.

Nance, your description of cuccinati reminded me of the tadales my mother used to make....and I sometimes still do. They have a prune, walnut, orange zest filling, dipped in sugar rather than icing.

Now that I see your recipe, I think these would be fun to make....and eat!

Luv, my DH texted me that the rain wasn't too bad, but the walk to the stadium from wherever they parked was a grueling trek thru some woods. Hahahaha. That's a first.....but one never knows what awaits when you hang with thirty year olds. Can't wait to hear about it.....:)

Gina that salad sounds yummy...minus the nuts...I don't like nuts of any kind or peanut butter. Too bad for me since they are so good for you.  Good luck on your surgery, will be thinking of you.

Not a lick of snow left here due to the rains yesterday. Today we will  hang out and watch football, told my DH we should probably do something productive, but he says he needs to relax...poor guy works every day of the week, I guess he can have a football day.  Put a pork loin in the crockpot, scalloped potatoes and some salad.  Made an apple cake yesterday and delivered to my GF, thought we would have it when I visited, but all we did was wine...haha and I left the cake with her.
