Luv, I usually very lazily put the whole pkg inside a freezer bag and toss them in. To use them, I just thaw the pkg enough to remove what I need then put them back. I have repackaged them in single use bags which is the preferred method.

Mr. Bucky not going today - emergency in prospective family. Sunday instead. Hoping it happens. Weather will be much better on Sunday, not 37 degrees. I know 37 is a heatwave for you up north but imagine standing in an open field, open to the north and herding goats around. I nearly froze my fingertips off with insulated gloves on taking them warm water yesterday. The sun out today is marvelous.

Instead going to get my haircut and grocery. I looked thru a book I have called 50 Simple Soups for the Slow Cooker. Picked out a black bean one and a potato/blue cheese one. Has some really good somewhat exotic ones. One called Hummus soup using dried chickpeas. I might need to get a heftier immersion blender. I think mine is mostly for milkshake type things.

Nancy - thanks for the tortilla tips. Seems they package those things in the giant size. We never use all of them but again goaties love them.

    Goats,

Why do you have to bring them warm water?

Can you post the potato blue cheese soup recipe please?

I planned on making potato soup tomorrow, but yours sounds better.

    Thanks!

The Chew Yesterday did a potato/cheese soup that they mentioned you could substitute cauliflower for the potato, or do half and half.  Had lots of yummy cheese, sour cream and crumbled bacon on top. Looked fabulous.  I really have been wanting to get myself an emulsion blender.

Today is huge pot of chili simmering on stove...and then got a last minute invite to pot luck dinner...soooo I will take the pot! Sometimes things just work out. Also have a growler of specialty beer that my son bought for DH for Christmas, that will go perfect with the chili.....I feel warmer already. Ha ha

That chicken I cooked earlier...I saved the bones and juice and am making soup.  Sharon and DD have a super nasty cold/something and both are in seeing a doctor to see what, if anything, can be done.  Maybe some homemade chicken soup will help....  Yesterday I was very tired and had a slightly sore throat.  Today, I'm OK and keeping busy with chores.

Moon...On the way to lunch with 5 other co-workers...I was the only one in the car to immediately understand the bumper sticker on the car in front of us, "Dyslexics of the world...Untie".  Numbers don't seem to be a problem for me, but 4 or 5 times a day, I'll have to re-read something that made no sense the first time through....

Carberry..chili is amazing for cold weather. That, and some corn bread!

I haven't seen Susan post in awhile???????

I'm feeling ambitious, so tonight will be sauteed tenderloin pieces and a cheese souffle. I'll throw something green in there too.

Sunny today and 50 tomorrow before we drop back into below zero temps. Jeez, I can't wait for January to be gone.

Bedo - this is the cheating way to post a recipe. I assume your internet is pretty good. This is the google book review that takes you to the book page. Susan kinda got me leery of posting recipes that I'd lifted from somewhere but with a direct reference I don't see a problem since I got it by a simple Google search.

    http://books.google.com/books?id=WrZXd3spyCYC&pg=P...

I will say I have not made this yet but I did find plenty of other blue cheese soups while looking for this. This 2nd site seemed esp. full of them. I love blue cheese, Feta anything like that. Hope DH does; he says he will eat it. I don't see why I can't add a bit of cooked chicken/turkey/smoked sausage to it but prob. will not at 1st to see how he likes it. I stopped with ingredients for the potato and the black bean chili. There were lots I could have liked.

I take the goats warm water to make them drink. They don't much like cold water and it was freezing a layer of ice on the top. They will drink it if they have to and when I was working they did, no choice. Stock - cows, horses - make do but mine are spoiled. Stockmen use an immersible tank heater than just keeps it from freezing. I have neutered males - they're called wethers yes no "a" in it if you ever see that term - and it's esp. important they drink since they can get bladder stones pretty easy. Also if I had a doe with babies it helps them make milk. The buckets are 2 1/2 gallon and I have 2 immersible bucket heaters gets them nicely warm in 15-20 with just cold tap water. The goats are just outside my backyard so not like I have to walk acres to get to them.

Have done my angel deed for a good while. I live at the bottom of a small rise. I watched the mail lady pull in neighbor's drive just above me and just thought they were getting a pkg. Later I looked out and saw some big white things in the bar ditch. 2 lovely dogs. About that time mail lady del. my mail and I asked if she was asking them about the dogs and she said yes. I didn't recognize them so between the 2 of us we managed to read their tags - she had dog treats. The owners were out driving looking for them. Fancy dogs with hunting tracking collars on them. The owners didn't realize how really close to their place the dogs were - across a few acres of open hay field. Told them to google map it and they'd realize how really not far they'd gone. Good dogs were just sitting, waiting. Could tell they were not dumped dogs. Feel good about it even though I have to wash the clothes from extreme doggy smell. Feel for mail lady she had them in her SUV. Offered a washcloth - one severely licked her face - but she declined. Must leave her a thankyou treat maybe Monday if I can catch her going out to verify it's her day.

OO - Carrie when I previewed this I saw your post. Good Karma there. Love when things work out like that. I saw my grocery has creme fraiche. Don't think these people will know what to do with it and it was $5.99 for a tiny tub expiring Monday. I bypassed for Greek yogurt for my potato soup. Bet they don't restock it.

Eric me either with Susan. Hope she's just good busy. Hope Sharon and DD get some relief.

Nancy - I'm tired of January too and we've not had your weather. But I'm not a spring storm person either. I passed up whole pork loins yest. at 1.49/lb. No room in freezer and they had some smaller ones. Oh well. Que sera. Oh bet you meant beef tenderloins - yum. We're having the remains of a Stouffers's lasagna - straightening house for goatie visit tomorrow.

LMGoats, I concur with Nancy, you are a good goat mommy. And it's good the dogs were found pretty fast.

Eric hope Sharon and DD get over whatever it is fast!

Carrie, I Love the chew. That soup did look good but a lot of cheese went in. But as Mario said it would make a great dip! And I too have chili on the menu. That way my DH can take some back home with him tomorrow.

Everyone stay warm. It's going to get cold enough here for me to keep the water dripping in the upstairs bathroom for the next couple nights. Predicting 10 to 20 below....

All that "below 0" stuff is so foreign to me.  I've been in those temperatures (in Arizona's mountains) and can deal with it...but I don't like it.

The fajita stuff, vegetables and meat, is marinating...olive oil, salt, chili powder, red pepper garlic, orange juice and cilantro.  Bell peppers and onion for vegetables and some generic beef that I sliced *real thin* for the meat.

  • Lacey12
    Lacey12 Posts: 2,895

Eric, that marinade sounds delicious! Enjoy your fajitas...:)

Tonight I made eggplant parm, sided with spaghetti squash and a salad of cukes, red onion, grape tomatoes, kalamata olives and a bit of mint.

Keep warm everyone who is coping with this second polar vortex!

Tonight was roast chicken with rosemary,

lemon and garlic , orzo with roasted

tomatoes and feta, and a romaine salad.

It was over 50 degrees and beautiful, if windy, today. Going to make the sub zero temps the next couple of days harsh. This polar vortex needs to go back where it came from and stay there.

I have no idea what's going on with this weird spacing.

auntieN, that's a beautiful souffle. I have never tried one. I will have to now.

Went out for breakfast at a restaurant new to us. Lovely food. Tasted great. I want to go back.omelets come either with dressed greens or pan fried fresh taters. Yum. I had one pancake and 2 eggs. You have your choice of plain or multi grain plus adding anything you want. I had multi grain with cranberries and nuts. With a turkey sausage.  But supper was chili leftovers! LOL

    Much love.

LOL, nance. I guess there's not a lot to do with a leftover souffle.... LOL

Eric I'm glad you don't have to deal with too much cold. It's no fun.

    Much love to all.

The fajitas were good, but I was the only one eating.  I had to mop up and start some laundry after DD's "Dad, I'm sick", so she didn't feel like eating.

Sharon has been feeling like crud, but not so spectacularly as DD....so no appetite there either.

I've been washing my hands every few minutes...that and my flu shot, so far, seem to be working.....

Moon, what are dressed greens?  I've dressed deer, elk, squirrel, rabbit, and in a different way, myself and (a long time ago) DD, but never greens...at least that I know of....

Auntie, That souffle looks good...another thing you all are inspiring me to try.

Eric, LOL.  Salad dressing? Vinegar and oil usually. Although I suppose pulling the stem out of kale count as dressing out the kale...

Eric:  I always took Airborne when I was trying to avoid other's colds or flu.  I learned about it when I was flying a lot but now use it at home too.  It's easy to take & has lots of extra vitamins/minerals/etc.  Good luck.

My dinner was similar to Laceys. except I had chicken cacciatore instead of parmesan. It was good, but the spaghitti squash I made was delicious. I Cut it in half and scooped out all the seeds, season with salt and pepper, then put them cut side down on a cookie sheet and roast them at a 400 degree oven for an hour or until tender. When done take two forks and shredd it so it looks like spaghitti. In a pan melt 1 stick of butter in pan until brown looking (brown butter) take a whole package of fresh sage leaves and fry in the butter until crisp ( I used 2 packages of sage for more flavor) remove the sage with slotted spoon, put on a paper towel. frying the sage really makes a difference so don't skip that part. Pour the browned butter over the squash, salt and pepper to taste and lots of  parmesan -reggiano top with crumbled sage. Recipe didn't call for pine nuts, but I toasted some pine nuts and topped it with some of those too. I was never a fan of spaghetti squash but love this recipe.

Hope every one is doing well.

Debbie- The spaghetti squash sounds good.  How are you feeling?

Eric- I hope your daughter and Sharon are feeling better.  I have had success lately fighting germs by taking probiotics, echanacia (sp?), vitamin C, D and B.  I got my voice back after a month once I did all together.  Now DS2 is sick with a cold and I am hoping to not get it by taking them.

I think I have the winter blahs.  I feel like I cook the same thing all the time.  DH has been working a lot and it has been freezing out.  So I have been stuck in the house a lot.  Cooking, cleaning, laundry etc.  Tonight I am making american chop suey.  I love the version I make.  Instead of tomato sauce I just use two jars of canned tomatoes from my fathers garden so it is kind of light.  Dh is not a fan so I only make it like once a year.

My MIL seems to be declining, losing weight quickly, loss of appetite and tired.  Where she is not having any treatment except starting the femara, we don't have much info.  She did go for blood work today so once we get the results from that it should give us an idea of where she is at.

    I hope everyone is well.

Laurie- So sorry to hear about your MIL not doing well. That was one of the reasons I had come here last night to see how she was doing. (((hugs))) to your family.  How do you make your americian version of chop suey? I have never made it home made before, Even without your dads good tomatoes I would like to try it.  I am hanging in there, seems like I am doing better on the machines each week I go a little longer, I actually enjoy going there, it gets me out and gets me moving which I know I need.

Eric-Hope DD and DW are doing better, glad you got the shot and not having any symptoms.

On the 29th will be 1 year since my sis passed, it feels like yesterday to me, It is also mine and DH anniversary so I feel bad that I won't wont to celebrate it with him this year, just too hard.

Seems like the dinner thread has been slow lately. Since DH is not a fan of speghitti squash, I made him a sgeghetti carbonara, He thought ti was delicious. Saute some cut up bacon and onions and garlic,in some EVoo while your speghitti is cooking, in a bowl whisk about  6 eggs, drain pasta (reserving some pasta water) mix the bacon, garlic and onion into the pasta then whisk in your eggs stirring constantly so they won't scramble, keep stiring until incorparated about 3 minutes or so add tons of parmesan cheese S&P to taste. The reserved pasta water is in case your pasta is a little dry you can pour a little water in to moisten it. A quick but easy delicious meal served with garlic toast.

    big hugs to all.

Debbie, the carbonara sounds delish. Of course I'm a fan of all things pasta. Sorry about your anniversary. Let's hope next year's better.

Laurie, sad about your mil. Not much to be done there I guess. It must be hard for you.

It has been quiet here, we seem to be missing several people. I hope it's just because everyone's busy. I do worry when we don't hear from people.

Well Laurie, good thing DH tacked that "ok" on. ;) You could remind  him that he could have been as lucky as my DH who got to have a combo of two nights of leftovers tonight! LOL!

I know what you mean about the winter blahs. I am having my own little case of them. Even with all my exercise efforts I find myself feeling moody....partially because I am not crazy over the heads I do volunteer work for and have to work with them this week....and also because the side effects from my tamoxifen are driving me nuts....the cognitve fog makes every project I do so much more difficult than it needs to be....and disturbingly, my eye allergies have  started up full force. For darn sake, it is January, not June!! Feeling physically and mentally not up to par is really bugging me, tho at least if I decide to take a long cold walk, there will be no pollen problems! Today I went to the Fitness Center to work off some steam, and was horrifed to see that our usually calm gym was wildly busy (January resolutions, I suppose!) ..first time I had to wait a long time (or at all) for a treadmill, but managed to get that done, then enjoyed my stretching class....always feel better after that.

Also had my yearly PE today and learned that I am 25 lbs lighter than last year at this time. That was exciting......not too exciting is that I have to start seeing an allergist for these damn tamox effect itching allergies. I keep trying to shed docs and keep being unsuccessful. Drat!!

Tomorrow I need to be ready to do a workshop with first graders at 8:30AM, when it will be (hopefully) a bit over  0 degrees out. I feel out of practice with this getting to school on early cold mornings! Guess I should be thankful I'm not doing it in Wisconsin  or Minneapolis!

Lacey- 25 pounds lighter?!  That is an amazing accomplishment!   I had just started working on my abs with exercises when I tweaked my back skating with my boys.  At least I have a while to go before bathing suit season.

I was lucky with dinner DS1 loved it, DS2 choked it down and DH ate seconds because he was hungry but did not complain.  He knows I love it and it reminds me of child hood.  I only make it maybe once a year.

Debbie-  I am so glad PY is helping you and you are enjoying it.  The recipe is so simple.

    1lb hamburger

    1/2 green pepper diced

    1/2 onion diced

brown all three together till done

cook 2 cups macaroni and drain, add meat mixture and two cans crushed tomatoes.  Salt and pepper the meat mixture to taste.  Put the heat on low once all combined and let simmer for about a half hour to absorb flavors.  Give it a stir every 5 min or so.

Yes, the whole thing with my MIL is hard.  I am supporting my SIL who is caring for her via text and phone through out each day.  Dh has a hard time talking about it.  I am hoping the blood work is in tomorrow so we have an idea what is happening.  She still will not acknowledge what is going on- which does not help.

laurie - your recipe was my MIL's go-to for the kids when she and my FIL were going out for the evening.  They called it "Mulligan Stew" - no idea why, but this same recipe is included in the family recipe book and all the kids loved it.  Sorry about your MIL - I know it is hard.

Debbie - when I make carbonara I add spicy Italian sausage and mix my eggs with a little heavy cream or half and half - it makes the egg coat the pasta well.  Sorry about the convergence of the anniversary of your sister's passing and your wedding anniversary - this is very familiar to me as my dad passed on my best friend's birthday, and my mom on her own birthday, which is another very good friend's birthday, and Cinco de Mayo - it is an ongoing problem for me.

lacey - congrats on the 25 lbs - awesome accomplishment!

Laurie sorry about your MIL. Hope the blood tests tell you something. And that recipe is very similar to my Mom's American chop suey. Except instead of tomato she used tomato soup. But it made a lot and there were 10 people to feed. We were never hungry.

Lacey! Congrats on the weight loss! That's fantastic.

Debbie the past carbonate sounds wonderful. On the Chew today they did that recipe. I am glad you got to do your exercise.

Couldn't stand chili for the third time in a row so froze the rest. Ate pasta with jarred sauce. It was good.

Stay warm. It's just -9 here right and supposed to drop further. All the schools closed around. So everyone stay warm. Much love.
