Hello Ladies,
Hope you are all doing well. I haven't been here in awhile, but keeping up with exercise. I've worked up to running (still very slowly) 1.5 mile every other day, still walking the dogs daily and working out on the weight machines three times a week. Hoping not to lose too much ground this next week while on a trip to visit both daughters and their families.

Pat, I made the icon myself, I was at the start page and I held my finger on the iPad and think I double tapped and it made an icon or maybe I just held and it happened.Did my Sh'bam class this morning and I have to say doing Bootcamp on both Saturday and Sunday has left me with very sore glutes, there was a lot of lunges and I sure feel it today

Welcome RedReading! Sorry you're dealing with heart stuff on top of BC. Exercise helps so much though. Just keep at it, a little at a time. NatsFan, I hope you finished your colonoscopy already. What an ordeal but so nice to have it done.
Pretty long hooping session today. Need to do weights tomorrow.

Welcome RedReading! Hope all goes well Mary and Inspired, not much can stop you.

Freestyle step last night and with son off school I was able to get to the 6:45am vinyasa flow yoga class. I'd never been at the gym at that early hour and omg, it was busy and filled with early birds and type a's working it before getting out to rule the world! I'll work more on my obsession and go back for the 9:45 body balance class. Fifteen year old angst still asleep and most likely will not be up til noon. Downward facing dog here I come.

This is in the 'Breaking News' on the home page of BCO right now:
Daily Exercise Reduces Breast Cancer Risk No Matter a Woman’s Age or Weight
Published on April 4, 2014 at 10:36 AM
Many studies have shown a link between exercise and a lower risk of being diagnosed with a first breast cancer or breast cancer coming back (recurrence). As a result, the American Cancer Society and many doctors recommend that women who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer exercise regularly -- about 4 to 5 hours per week at a moderate intensity level.
A study suggests that women who exercise for more than an hour a day have about a 12% lower risk of breast cancer compared to women who don’t exercise. This link between lower risk and exercising more than an hour per day applied to women of any age and weight. In other words, it didn’t matter how old the women were when they started exercising or how much they weighed -- they still got risk reduction benefits.
The research was presented at the 9th European Breast Cancer Conference on March 20, 2014 in Glasgow. Read the abstract of “Physical activity, hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer risk: A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.”
This study was a meta-analysis -- a study that combines and analyzes the results of many earlier studies. In this case, the results of more than 4 million women from 37 studies on exercise and breast cancer risk published between 1987 and 2013 were analyzed.
More than 114,100 breast cancers were diagnosed in the studies:
- 4,300 were diagnosed in premenopausal women
- 31,500 were diagnosed in postmenopausal women
- 78,300 were diagnosed in women whose menopausal status wasn’t known
The researchers compared women who exercised the most -- more than an hour per day of vigorous exercise -- to women who exercised the least and found that women who exercised the most had a 12% lower risk of breast cancer.
Many studies have shown a link between taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and a higher risk of breast cancer. So the researchers also wanted to know if taking HRT affected how much exercise lowered breast cancer risk. They found that taking HRT seemed to cancel out the risk-lowering benefits of exercise. It’s important to know that if you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer, you should NOT take any type of HRT.
If you’re busy with work, household chores, and family matters, finding more than an hour a day to exercise may seem impossible. Still, other studies have suggested that it’s consistency that counts. Doing some type of exercise every day -- even if it’s for less than an hour -- is better than doing nothing.
It may help to break up the exercise into 20- or 30-minute sessions that add up to more than an hour over the course of the day. Walking is a great way to start. Maybe you walk 30 minutes before going to work and another 40 minutes on your lunch break. You can add a few more minutes of walking by parking farther away from your building or taking mass transit. Make plans to walk with a friend after work -- you’re more likely to stick with exercise if someone else is counting on you. Plus, you can socialize and release the day’s stress.
Along with a healthy diet and lifestyle choice, regular exercise is one of the best things women can do to keep the risk of a first-time breast cancer or recurrence as low as it can be. This study adds to other research suggesting that exercising every day reduces breast cancer risk more than exercising once or twice a week. Regular exercise also helps keep your physical and mental health in top shape. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late or too soon to get moving.

OK Cheryl, that sounds complicated, but I will give it a shot tonight. Just make an icon for the BCO forum on my Ipad. Sure, I can do that

Got my walk in at lunch yesterday, but that's about it. Dinner with an old friend last night who is going through some tough times. This morning my back is killing me, not sure why. Will try to walk at lunch if it stops raining. I have my gym bag in the car, we will see if this back thing works itself out during the day.

30 minutes - 10km - exercise bike.
I did the weekly shopping after work today and was rather tired. Thought I might skip exercise (pun!) but ............
The voices made me do it.

StillrunningNLM - well done. 10k in an hour and 2 minutes. I just realized that you can run for an hour and 1 minute longer than I can. Rest and recover.

I did it! Made an icon for the forums on my ipad. Now I might be able to keep up with this fast moving thread.
Did manage a walk at lunch, but skipped the gym. Just feeling blah and tired.

Welcome RedReading. I started with just 5 minutes on the EFX!
Reporting in: 4 mile hike - 60 minutes - 88 degrees (ugh!) and then 15 minutes at gym for 2 more miles.
"It's also important to remember that, in this connection of the positive value of physical activity, just 5 or more weekly hours of vigorous recreational activity as compared to no recreational activity results in ~40% risk reduction (as shown by the French research team of Bertrand Tehard and colleagues), and the greatest risk reduction ~ 50% - occurs in women who perform the equivalent of walking 3 to 5 hours per week at an average pace (with little evidence of a correlation between any increased benefit from greater energy expenditure above this level, as shown by the findings of Michelle Holmes at Brigham and Womens Hospital and her colleagues).garding Exercise and Risk Reduction -
What we now know therefore based on the cumulative evidence is that high-PE (physical exercise), defined as greater than or equal to 5 weekly hours of vigorous PE (>= 5 wk hrs) reduces risk of breast cancer by approximately 40%, and that in addition women with hormone-responsive breast cancer who engaged in 9 or more MET-hours/ week of activity sustain an even higher 50% risk reduction of breast cancer death, compared with women who engage in less than 9 MET-hours/week. Here the concept of a MET (metabolic equivalent task) hour is understood by the fact that walking one hour at 3 miles/hr expends 3 MET-hrs. And one can obtain an even higher 60% reduction in the risk of death from breast cancer by engaging in 24 or more MET-hours/week, which would be equivalent to walking at least 8 hours per week (about 1 and one-quarter hours, or 75 minutes daily) of walking at 3 miles per hour. If high-PE were further coupled with both caloric restriction, adherence to Modified Cretan-Mediterranean (MCM) Diet of high-fiber/lignan, low saturated fat, low-glycemic consumption + high fruit and vegetable intake, and vigorous resistance training, especially if sufficient to establish and maintain consistent normal weight control and significant reduction of abdominal sarcopenic obesity (aka, "chemobelly"), then the combination lifestyle-nutritional regimen of Caloric Restriction + MCM Diet adherence + Resistance Training + high-PE (high MET hours aerobic physical exercise) should significantly heighten these gains further. And note that the two potential mechanisms by which physical activity could affect breast cancer survival are not only the estrogen pathway but also the insulin pathway."

Cheryl, my 5k is called the Washington Fitathon and is actually being held in the suburbs near my home. Received the email today that outlines the obstacle course. Think the 8 foot walls and cargo net climb may do me in...LOL
Allergies are really bothering me so took today to rest so I can be at my best this weekend.

I have been busy running a lot of errands the last two weeks. I can't really remember when I last reported in. Last week I started off with a bang but when my yoga class got cancelled, I sort of let the rest of the week die on the vine. Trying to do better this week so Saturday I had an hour of yoga and 35 minutes walking. Sunday I did more shopping. Yesterday I did my stair rounds at work. Today I did a 25 minute walk outside in the 59 degree weather! Saw crocuses in several neighbors yaards, and more importantly, an utter lack of snow!
I'd also like to report I finally got my taxes done and submitted! So now that I have found the dress and shoes I needed and done my taxes, hopefully I'll have more time for exercise.
Welcome, Red. My progress seemed so slow at first but its getting easier. You can do this.
Inspired oh my that was a tumble. Glad to see you are back in the swing of it now.

Went for a walk after dinner and jogged a small portion of it (very small portion). Most of it was on a local bike/hike trail so not sure of exact distance but it was around 4000 steps according to fitbit and took around 40-45 minutes. I hit my 10,000 step goal for the fourth day in a row since getting fitbit operational. 10,000 is hard to hit on workdays unless I do a decent walk in the evening (or get back to working out in the morning). Plantar fasciitis is still there but not nearly as acute since I've been doing the stretching therapy. Will keep doing the calf stretches and ibuprofen regimen. I also plan on buying a new pair of shoes soon. Love my Brooks Adrenaline!

Ruth I hope that robin doesn't freeze!
Ruth and Inspired, thanks for the articles. Have to admit I'm not logging an hour a day of exercise lately, but I do have the high fruit and vegetable thing. Well, most days :-)
Hooped today, doing weights later.

Body Jam class tonight. Bounce - you and me = running buddies
See Pat told you you could do it
You know the reason I love my classes is that they're an hour long, so I get to exercise but I feel like I'm just having fun. I didn't put my Fitbit on till I got In my car for work then had a sedentary day so when I got to the gym tonight I'd only logged 3500 steps but after class I was a 9885, woohoooo.0 -
May I join your thread? I just finished rads today. I've gained 24 pounds since being diagnosed, and don't even know where to start. Walking from my bed to the recliner has been the extent of my exercise the past month.

Welcome SDB every step counts as exercise, it's a journey that is day by day, it's great to see you here.

Good to meet you SDB....We are all at different levels ...... and are here to encourage and support each other..no contests here, we're all just doing our best and we all have "those days". Most of us can relate to the bed to recliner walk stage.....hang in there..things DO get better.

hbcheryl & nihahi, thank you for the welcome!
hbcheryl, I used to live in OC and can't even count the visits to the Sugar Shack and Wahoo's in HB.

SDB love both the Sugar Shack and Wahoos, Sugar Shack is always packed but well worth the wait.

Welcome SDB - everyone has to start somewhere
. There's no judging here on what you do or how long or far or fast you do it (or how short or slow you do it....lol). The point is to be aware and give it a try. Do what you can, your body's been through hell and it may seem pointless or even impossible at times. Even those unintentional squats every time you sit down and stand up and so on count. We're here for you!0 -
Welcome, slowdeepbreaths, SO glad that you are here!!! Do something 'exercisy' every day on purpose (even if it is to park future from the store when you are shopping), work yourself into it, report in here (we want to pump you up
), and you will be surprised how good you will start to feel.....physically AND mentally. The Walking Wednesday Women are taking it outside, so I have to dig out my under armour, gloves and a hat!

Beautiful day here, so definitely a walk at lunch, and that gym bag is still in the car, though might not get used, hubby and I have been trying to "do something" on wednesday nights, we found we were becoming the ultimate couch potatoes, so we now try to go to a movie, or grab a bite to eat once a week. It's nice to reconnect.
Welcome SDB - sorry for your weight gain, but this is the place for you - their exercise enthusiasm is contagious!
