I was just thinking about Silly String. Do you remember that as a child...when it first came out? The first time someone brought it to a party? ("What is that stuff?") I know it is still around. I might have to go buy some now.

My kid picks it up every year for New Year's!

  • Loved silly string.

I think I've talked about my disappointment about NEVER having my name called on Romper Room.

    It was traumatic.

    Edited for Typo

Does anyone remember 'necker knobs'? Maybe before most of your times. I love the Wiki description: A knob attached to the steering wheel of an automobile, especially before the widespread availability of power steering, helping the driver to steer with one arm and leaving the other arm free to provide romantic attention to a companion

I hadn't thought about them in years but saw one in a catalog advertised as an "Easy Rider Steering Knob" for lawn tractors. Quite a difference in purpose from "romantic companion":

  • MinusTwo, I've never heard of 'necker knobs'.

I miss all the FUN stuff!!

I know of what you speak but didn't know that was what they were called.  I remember one on someone's steering wheel that I knew & it was like jeweled red color.

I went to a movie with a boy around1961 who had a 1940 vintage Dodge with a necker knob. My Mother would have been horrified. But then she didn't allow drive-in movies either.

  • I've never heard of "necker knobs" but I have heard of "suicide knobs"!

    Haha! Funny, Native!

I didn't know that was what they were called either. "Necker knobs" to facilitate "necking." The term "necking" predates my own teen years, btw. The funny thing is, I think I saw a few necker knobs on the steeling wheels of 70's vans, but that would be a lot more deadly to try and get romantic than if it was just on car steering with a bench type seat.

Speaking of 70's and Van-culture, remember how tricked-out they could make them back in the day? Curtains, shag carpeting, lofts, that weird trim with little hangy-balls? Quadro-phonic sound. Yeah, baby!

Good examples, NM! That ceiling tapestry made me think of 70's-popular BATIK cloth. I still like it.

  • I still like Batick, too, it's beautiful!

  • This is what our 70's van looked like.

    I sure loved that thing.

My son loved Tinker toys! He used to build some really cool things. In fact, even in high school, he managed to use them for a project. Oh ya, he also bought one of those tipping drinking birds the other day. He's 16 1/2, but says he belongs in the 40's. Heck, I wasn't even born until the early 60's :-).

  • I do remember Tinker Toys! Great fun!
